“I’m not scared,” Rory told the other pointedly — practically growled, in fact, knuckles white with exertion as he gripped the rickety seat below. He couldn’t imagine how the other was so calm and collected; not with the way the ride groaned with every inch upwards — clearly straining even with so little weight to carry. It was too similar for his liking; lying there against the hot cement, the groan of the car above him. And he could hear someone screaming; fuck, he wished that they would just shut up, his head already pounding. If only he could just go to sleep … though it was then that he realized he was the one endlessly shrieking, his voice beginning to crack, going hoarse. The car giving another horrifying groan from above, seconds from catching flame. “I’m not scared,” He repeated once more then, attempting to visibly calm himself, not wanting to hear it from the other; Mara no doubt getting a fuckin’ kick out of all this. Though, the higher they climbed, the harder he held on; refusing to look anywhere but his lap, willing the ride to be over. With that, he let out an uneasy breath. “Fuck,” He cursed audibly, eyes squeezing shut, his heartbeat – if he had one anymore – no doubt racing in his chest if it could. “Fuck, fuck, alright —” He spoke then, head shaking somewhat as he did so. “I just — I don’t like rides, alright? Any rides.” Swallowing hard, he allowed himself a peak in the other’s direction. “Don’t look so fuckin’ pleased,” He grimaced, giving her a look as he did so. “It’s a legitimate fear. It’s the —- sounds,” Rory finally managed to get out. “I don’t like the creaking, it sounds — I mean, it sounds like it’s going to give any second.”
❝ sure, you’re not. ❞ the ferris wheel started and mara had turned away from him, having nothing else to say. she did say it’d be a ten minute truce, after all. she rested an arm on the car’s railing, and she stared out towards the carnival below them as well as the town past the perimeter of the fair. a wave of nostalgia washed over her -- as much as she’d swear there was nothing keeping her in old hollow, she couldn’t help but feel some sort of fondness for the town. it was where she had grown up after all, where she’d had some of the best moments of her life. how strange it was to hold it in such high regard when all mara wanted to do was to leave. his saying ‘i’m not scared’ again broke her out of her reverie and she finally looked back at him. though he had looked scared before, his expression now was something else entirely. she couldn’t hide the shock that crossed her features to see him looking so terrified. ❝ pleased ? ❞ she echoed, the word sounding choked. her brows knitted together as she stared at him. of all the things she could have imagined happening on this damned ferris wheel, this was the very last expectation she had. ❝ for fuck’s sake, rory, do you really think that little of me ? ❞ a choked laugh escaped her. ❝i know we don’t fucking get along on a good day, but do you really think i’m some sort of sadist ? ❞ she took a deep breath, exhaling sharply through her nose. her own hurt feelings needed to wait until later, mara decided. they didn’t have priority while he was clearly having some sort of crisis. ❝ you could have said that you don’t like rides -- that’s all it would have taken for me to leave you alone. ❞ guilt washed over her, leaving her uncomfortable. she knew that wasn’t quite true -- she would have thrown a jibe or two at him, trying to egg him into it. but had she known he’d get so upset, she really wouldn’t have asked in the first place. ❝ it’ll be fine, ok ? people have been getting on and off this thing all day, and if you really want me to, i can try to wave down the ride operator to see if he can let us off sooner ? ❞ she reached out a hand gingerly, resting it lightly on his arm, saying, ❝ do you want me to just talk really loud until we can get off ? you did say my voice was obnoxious and grating or something the other day. maybe i can drown out the noises of this thing. ❞ she wasn’t trying to make light but she wondered if maybe distracting him would help.
