An Honest Discussion About Content Post-December
Sooooo... Tumblr isn’t quite what it used to be. After the December NSFW ban, the traffic seems to be much different than before, and I’d like to ask if others also felt a difference in how their content was consumed by their followers?
My earlier posts, a few months ago, consistently racked up over double the notes they do currently. This was stuff that I actually rushed to a degree, and I’m putting in much more effort into these pieces than I was prior because I have more free time to actively work on them and tweak my style to something I feel is more pleasant and presentable. Now, this isn’t a post whining about my stuff getting less attention than before, but rather to receive your input as to how the NSFW ban affected your interactions with your followers/mutuals.
Are you getting considerably less attention than you were prior? Less interactions from your followers? How has this affected your work flow?
For me personally, I feel a bit less of a drive to work on this blog, of course I’m not stopping or planning to slow it down to the degree it was prior, but it is a bit discouraging to see how Tumblr has ignored the feedback of users to the point where this is THIS much of a shift in the Pokeask community, at least. So many of my friends and fellow artists have switched to Twitter as their primary means of uploading their content because it seems to be a vastly more effective site for their followers to view and interact with them, it’s very sad to see how lonely my dashboard has gotten. But who can blame them? Creators have to deal with their pieces getting flagged constantly by a system that consistently errs and marks @staff‘s OWN posts! Let alone the posts of anyone who uses something even remotely close to a skin color! Artists and followers are finding Tumblr too cumbersome and too hostile towards content to bother staying.
That being said, I feel it’s important for those of us who are still trying to primarily engage on Tumblr to be more cohesive and receptive to each others’ work, be it writing, digital art, traditional, or any other medium. I’m far from some community leader, but I don’t think you need to be to request that we be more courageous about commenting or liking someone’s hard work.
In that vein, if anyone would like to throw out their blog, or any other blog, for me and others to check out and follow, please do! I’d love to have my dash filled with lovely art that makes my heart swell again! We can take this as a loss for the community or a chance to reinvigorate it by doubling down and supporting those who are left, and create a fantastic environment for new blogs and artists to flourish and feel welcomed by.
