Speaking of the luck of the non-disabled…I once terrorized a Karen who was using me to teach her entitled kid that disabled people are Other and should not be treated with respect. I told her (truthfully) that until I was twenty-eight, I wasn’t visibly disabled. Then a defective chromosome that I hadn’t known about kicked in. So my luck ran out. But until then, I had been normal–just…like…her. 

The sheer terror on her face as the concept of “You mean I’ve just been lucky so far?” seeped into her brain was a thing of beauty.

This is what I find so hilarious about the concept of “temporarily embarrassed millionaires”

Basically the concept goes like this:

In America people vote against their own interests because they’re taught to believe there’s no way things could ever get worse for them. Things are always right around the corner from turning around and then Boom, you’ll get your big break and be a millionaire.

So you’re not really struggling. You’re not on the verge of homelessness. No no. Everyone in America is just temporarily embarrassed millionaires.

And “when things really turn around you’ll WANT that inheritance tax to be low because what IF you want to leave your kids 5 million dollars? Do you REALLY want the state to take 20% of that when you die? That’s a whole million dollars you could have left your kids! Think of your children!”

You’re working at burger King? Well you’re not gonna be working there forever, right? You should really vote AGAINST the inheritance tax! What if you get rich?

AND THE WHOLE TIME PEOPLE ARE IGNORING THE MUCH GREATER LIKELIHOOD THAT THINGS COULD GO THE OTHER WAY

What if you get injured at your burger king job? What if you get burned with hot grease or punched by some irate customer? What if you slip a disc in your spine while emptying the trash at your shitty job and have to spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair? Maybe, JUST MAYBE, It would be a good idea to help the people who are already in wheelchairs.

Maybe voting in favor of helping the people who need the most help does a LITTLE MORE GOOD than voting to protect people who don’t need protecting.

You’re much less of a “temporarily embarrassed millionaire” and much more of a “potential future disabled person” or a “potential future homeless person”

Same as me. Same as just about everybody
