I had somebody on messages ask me why i liked bloodymary so much, but i figured id make a post about it anyway.
i love bloodymary because i love Simon, not the ship. I believe Simon deserved nothing of what happened to him. He was raised in a cult that conditioned him to kill as a child, and then was persecuted for an accident that he couldn't have prevented. He suffered like HELL on that submarine, and though I'm not disappointed with the ending, it definitely left me with a sense of injustice, and I felt bad.
So when all of you saw that and were like, "hey, how about we drop this tragic man into a hopeful, also space-themed universe? And he can have a happy ending?" I jumped at it like a feral cat. the opportunity to see a character i had grown to love be able to heal and experience life away from the hellhole he had been in is obviously an insane offer. And who better to be the other half of the ship than ryland grace, the man who might just understand the terror of being sent to your death with no other option?
Similarly, bloodymary isn't inherently romantic. Yeah there are smut fics and stuff, but so many of the content is platonic, and focused on healing and the opportunity to live a better life than before. And i wholeheartedly believe that Simon deserves that life. But more than that, it also gives Grace, another personal favorite character of mine, a person to be with, who wasn't from the world that sent him to die. And with a couple twists, the storyline is relatively feasible; the light being a wormhole theory made sense before, but now it can be used.
It also gives a chance for Simon's trauma to be explored better. What happened to him isn't mentioned much in the movie, and unironically i feel like being able to try to characterize him in the bloodymary scenario helped me to envision and understand his character better; we only ever saw him in high stakes, terrifying scenarios. What would happen if he was given the peace he deserves? How would he react? H was never given the opportunity to be gentle and have that reciprocated, how would he feel if he was?
and best of all, markiplier knows about it!
so yeah. Get that man a happy ending. He deserves all of it. grace is amazing too, but it becomes more for Simon.
