Chapter 5: Push and Pull Away, Until the Grip Tightens
Days blurred as your cuts started to heal. You can now swim longer without taking a break from the cuts. Yuji was there, a smile on his face as he watched you happily swim around. Seeing you happy made him happy. But yet, there was something in his heart that tugged. He’s already feeling saddened that he’s going to lose a friend.
“Hey, Y/n,” he spoke. His eyes shyly averted as he asked you a question as you got closer to him. “We’re… still going to be friends after you go back to the ocean, …right?”
He looked upset despite trying to hide it behind a smile. You swam closer until your hand reached out for his, “Yeah, we’re going to be… friends. You’ve been… teaching me new words…Yuji.”
“Of course, that’s what friends do. Friends help out each other in need,” he spoke, grabbing your hand back. His eyes trailed down to your hand, taking note of their webbed hands. Pale, tiny hands with a blue tint around your fingers. They look so much like a human, but with a closer look, they’re the complete opposite. At first, he thought mermaids were supposed to look a little monstrous, but imagine his surprise when he saw you. Completely blew all of his expectations. Before he knew it, weeks and a month had passed and you’re all healed. He heard talk about the higher-ups wanting to release you as soon as possible. It could be next week or maybe in a few days.
His heart is twisting if not fluttering, lately, he hasn’t been sleeping well. And the answer is you, you’re the problem. He never thought it would be in his bingo card, developing feelings for a non-human being. But he can’t… not just yet. He wants to wait until the time is perfect. “I… I have to go now, Y/N. But I’ll see you later, ok?”
“Ok,” you said softly. Pulling your hand away as he walks away, you swim back to the waters, and he does his job around the aquarium. Completely unaware of the target he has created on his back.

Hours passed and soon everyone was almost relieved that their shifts were almost over. Yuji had a little pep in his step as he thought about you. They can hang around the tank for a bit before he goes home. Maybe he can see if he can snag a fish from the kitchen? With a cheerful little hum, he was startled when he felt an arm around his neck. “O-Oh, Gojo-sensei! You’ve startled me.”
“Ahh, sorry, sorry. But Yuji, do you mind if I ask you to stay a little behind later?” Gojo asked with a smile. Disappointed but didn’t show, he sighed before he agreed and asked. “Um, do you mind if I were to ask. Am I… in trouble?”
“No, far from it. I just need to ask you a few questions, that's all. Better yet, want to have a drink with me outside? You must’ve been stressed after all that hard work you’ve done around the place, especially looking after the mermaid.”
“Oh, um, sure, why not.” He could use a drink. He’ll text Sukuna in a moment, letting him know he’ll be home late. It was past ten, the stars were out and so was the full moon. The waves sparkling from the warmth of the moonlight, the air salty and cold. A perfect night to drink your worries away.
“Yuji, over here!” Gojo said with a wave. Sitting on the rocks, dangerously close to the sea. “Gojo-sensei, why are you sitting over there? You could easily slip or get hurt!” Yuji yelled as he got closer, reaching his hand out to him. Laughing and cracking open a beer, Gojo reassured him. “Relax, Yuji. I’ve sat here over a dozen times, now come on over and sit down with me. Let your senpai teach you a few things or two.”
Handing him a beer, Yuji took it and cracked it open. Joining him on the rocks as he took a sip and coughed it out. That’s what beer tastes like? Like vomit, then again, Sukuna likes drinking this kind of stuff. “So-” he stopped coughing and swallowed what’s left of the horrible taste in his mouth. “What ahem- What did you want to talk to me about, Gojo-sensei?”
He cleared his throat again as he watched him take a sip before talking. “It’s about the mermaid, the higher-ups are planning to release her as soon as possible. They’re thinking of three days.”
His shoulders slumped and he let out a soft ‘oh’, his fingers softly tapping on the can. “That’s a damn shame,” he tries to mask the disappointment. “I knew it was going to happen someday, I… still feel like there’s so much more to talk to them about. I never thought in my life I would be friends with a mermaid, y’know? It’s like a weird dream that I didn’t think would happen. What’s next? Dragons are real, they’re disguised as mountains? Fairies too or wait, they’re in some deep dark forest? Heh, what a weird world we live in.”
Gojo could only hum in agreement, his eyes staring straight into his soul, but quickly looked away and towards the sea. “I saw you befriending them, Yuji. Don’t tell me you got attached to them already.”
“Haha, guilty as charged?” He sheepishly smiled. “I just never thought I would be friends with a mermaid, you know? It's like a wild dream that magically came true. I'll deeply miss them once they leave. But it's what we do, we save marine animals, and we care for them until we send them back. Ah- not like I'm calling Y/N an animal!”
“It’s fine, Yuji. I know you didn’t mean it.” Sipping on the cold alcohol as he stares at the rolling waves. “But you’re right, it's what we do, it's our job. Here.”
He raises his can to Yuji's can, “To… saving all lives.”
“To saving.” Yuji clinked his can with Gojo's and watched him as he downed his beer can with one big gulp. Well, here goes nothing. He did the same thing, emptying the can as he let out a big exhale before coughing. Yea, maybe he’ll stick to something less rough like beer.
But… is beer supposed to make you feel sluggish? Confused and dazed, his head spinning as he dropped the can. “Ah, silly Yuji. Don't you know you’re not supposed to litter near the sea? How careless of you.”
“Mr. Gojo…. I don’t feel too good,” he said, holding his head. Does alcohol really start to hit after one swing? He wasn’t sure, but something felt off. “Gojo?”
“You know, Yuji. I hated the fact that you got close to my dear, I hated that she smiled in your presence. I wanted them to smile only at me and only me. It annoyed me, I hated it so much that I had to get rid of you. What a shame, I really liked having you around. You were a good hard worker, but it had to be done. So no hard feelings, right, Yuji? Surely you would understand, this is for my love, our love.”
Yuji starts to cough and tries to scramble away from him, but Gojo pulls him back by the shoulder and pushes him into the sea. Never to be seen again. Letting out an exhale through his teeth, Gojo grabbed the rest of the beer cans and left.
