There were many times she questioned if the location of her forest was bad for business. What with it being so far within the Wolvendom - especially towards the portions people were keen to avoid due to local fanged fiends. There were the occasional brave folk who trekked all the way there in need of some panacea or tincture, but they were few and far between. She was more likely to run across local kids daring each other to enter only to get spooked off by their own superstitions. But it wasn't easy to just move an entire cottage, not when it was built under the stump of what was once a very large tree. The best she could do was at least tidy up the place.
Of course the greenery and foliage spilling out from every possible window sill wasn't what she considered 'messy'. Neither were the vines that now seemed to make up half the thatched roof. The garden was more so a jungle than a 'garden', and it was all right in her eyes. It was the random bits and bobs and odds and ends that had collected within her home over the past... how long was it? It required things to be moved around just to get to more piles of unnecessary clutter.
A little squirrel had been scurrying by, the cottage its destination, when it stopped and twitched its nose in the direction of the stranger. It almost mimed a shocked stance and quickly bounded towards the house. Chattering away at its sole occupant who was busy picking up several scrolls that had fallen over.
"I don't even know what these say anymore," she muttered, glancing into each one and its faded writing. "Some recipe, perhaps. Yes hello, Pinto, I'm busy cleaning." The squirrel continued to chatter, flicking glances outside. "Yes, I heard you the first time! 'There's a walking one outside'. I'm a little busy trying to tidy up--" She registered what she had heard. "There's someone outside?!" And the bundle of scrolls dropped from her arms and rolled out the open front door.
In the midst of Sucrose's fussing, movement at the door of the cottage caught their immediate attention, ears angling forward in anticipation. For better or worse, the unexpected shift seemed to freeze them in place, as if poised to... well, to do something? Half conscious of themselves, their hand clutched lightly near the vision adorning their collar, prepared to muster up an anemo swell if a threat presented itself.
..But nothing really seemed to happen.
More curious than afraid, now that the window for tension had begun to ease off, the alchemist took careful steps closer to peer into the open entryway... where a pile of lost scrolls presented themselves without context. If anything, this was surely a stronger case for bait than even the mysterious cottage surrounding it. A trap set to lure in curious scientists who just couldn't help themselves! After all, what could possibly be inlaid upon documents in the middle of nowhere?
Luckily, Sucrose was not only a scientist, but one who could at least defend themselves readily. Deciding to chance it in pursuit of knowledge(!!!), they dropped to a kneel, crawling the last bit of distance to reach one hand towards the fallen papers...
...and coming more or less face to face with, well. A very beautiful person? Startling away from the papers, they stumbled to their feet, arms waving around in front of themselves animatedly.
"Oh- I'm so sorry! I-I had no idea anyone lived here, I just saw- Well, I saw these scrolls out here, a-and I thought- I don't know what I thought, but- um- I'm not a treasure hoarder!"
Ah, yes. Kaeya had indeed seen those flyers as he was patrolling. And yet he'd been far too busy to even think to give them a second glance. A shame, really โ for if he'd read them, he could have already helped Sucrose through this whole mess by now.
Hearing the alchemist's predicament made him feel the slightest twinge of guilt. Not that his smug expression hinted at that fact in the slightest.
"I suppose today's where your luck turns around. After all, you are talking to a cryo vision bearer. And I suppose that I'd be a bad friend if I refused such an important request, hm?"
"O-Oh, well... It's, more of a business offer than a personal one, you shouldn't worry about..."
Their voice trailed to a halt as they flustered slightly, realizing a little too late that this playful kind of talk had always been a staple of the Calvary Captain's infamous personality. In spite of Kaeya's easy agreement, however, the alchemist didn't leap at the opportunity as immediately as they initially seemed to set up for.
"..A-Are you sure you have the time? It's important, but. You're equally important to the knights, after all."
Eyes widening as her throat started feeling better already. However, she wished not to risk undoing the progress by straining her voice further. So she nodded in response to Sucrose's inquiry, pointing to her own neck and giving her a thumbs-up. She hoped that would suffice for a response.
"Ah- I see!"
Yellow met blue as Sucrose's eyes flitted immediately to note Barbara's apparent surprise at the development. Holding her gaze for just a moment, the alchemist then fiddled with the tray to reassemble the glassware for easy handling- One cup should be fine, after all. Happy to have resolved the immediate issue, they gently nudged the dishes out from between the pair, knitting their hands across their lap.
"You look like you feel better... I'm glad." The joy of the development faltered, however, as they recalled the initial event that had sparked this entire meeting. The still recent memory of Barbara, in tears and in pain. Their easy smile flickered as the earlier admission stuck to their mind like a pollen granule. "..What should we do now? Would... you like to return to the chapel to rest?"
sweetflowerzโ
It was almost like a return to the very start of the day, the way Sucrose went wide eyed and startled. But it was hardly a negative shock- Moreso, a sort of awestruck amazement that Blanche both knew about their earlier agricultural advancements and even knew their personal involvement in the spray. Itโs not like they werenโt credited on the distribution label, butโฆ Well, it wasnโt something they thought a lot of people were all that aware of.
It was a welcome development from a very unexpected source. To think anyone but Timaeus would acknowledge their work! Thoroughly flattered all over again, they made an awkward attempt to return the bow, mumbling out hurried it was nothingโs, before blinking at the new question. A little unconsciously, they lifted a hand, finger probing at the edge of their glasses like a lifeline.
Eyes flitting to the sidelines momentarily, they mulled over the approach. โMy current researchโฆ Thereโs a few different things Iโve been working on. Um- A little in collaboration with Mr. Albedoโs own developments in Dragonspine. Althoughโฆโ Their voice trailed off, an uneasy glint sparking in their wayward gaze before they shook it off just as quickly. โWell, thatโs just a prototype.โ
Finding themselves once more, they dropped their hand from their temple, although their line of sight remained firmly positioned anywhere but forward. โMy personal research might not be very interesting from an outsiderโs perspective, butโฆ Iโm doing a lot of work with elemental infusion. I use my own vision for anemo harnessing, however. All elemental energies vary from user to user. It could be worthwhile to have another anemo wielder involved. I- Well, I canโt promise itโd be very interesting. The specifics depend on what sample group weโd be testing on. Iโm.. testing how different tissues respond to these elemental properties. To investigate the origin of elemental life forms. Amongโฆ other things.โ
Hesitation stilled them, a frown beginning to tug at their expression. โItโs more of an educational venture than actual biotech development. Um- But itโs a necessary first step before I actually know what I want or need to make. Still, your involvement might feelโฆ menial. In comparison to- to things like field combat.โ
โDragonspine, eh?โ A place that she really didnโt like. Sure, she could handle the cold like the other Captains, but spending extended periods of time there even chilled her to the bones. The frostburn got to her and that one time she had to spent extensively searching for a few lost members of the Knights of Favonius, had resulted in her being knocked out for a week straight.
Since then she rarely ever went there, unless it was urgent or a request of the Acting Grand Master herself. Still listening to Noelle, she noticed that she was done with the food and decided to toss a pouch of Mora towards the chef and in the same movement, put back her helmet.
โItโs a bit bad that weโre both Anemo users, but as you stated, maybe two anemo users could produce different results?โ She questioned, and then waved it off afterwards. โAs the saying goes; The journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. In order to get to the true development, weโll have to do some educational venturing first.โ
Yep, with that she stood up and gave a thumbs up towards Sucrose. โI had a lot of fun talking to you today, but my shift is about to begin. I hope that we can meet each other tomorrow. again and then discuss the schedule we have in mind better, once youโve given it some thought?โ
"Oh!" Seemingly caught off guard by the time, they looked up at the sun as if to somehow read its position. "I-It's already been so long..."
Somehow, the prospect of parting almost seemed to disappoint Sucrose for a moment. It wasn't often they had the pleasure nor the leisure to be able to keep company so casually like this, and it was the first real step they'd made past a purely professional acquaintanceship with Blanche. And yet... duty did call.
"I'll... certainly give it my full attention. Immediately!" Announcing so a little bit loudly- as if to affirm it as much as possible- they stood abruptly from their seat as well, a stark contrast from Blanche's organic retreat. "Er- If you ever need to find me and I'm not at headquarters, please speak with Timaeus. If... If not, I'll find you first."
โLike wine is corked, ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย So too my lips are sealed.โ

She was slightly hesitant to take the cup from the other after watching how it was made. However, she still trusted the alchemist, and was more or less reassured after hearing an explanation. Carefully taking the cup, she took a sip. A small sip, just in case it was as hot as she'd been warned it was.
However, after having a taste, Barbara found that the contents were rather sweet. Curiouser and curiouser, she took another sip of it, though it was a bigger one this time. Soon enough she'd finished the entire cup, setting it down next to her.
And there she sat, waiting for the remedy to work its magic. She wasn't sure how long she was supposed to wait for it to kick in, but she didn't dare try to rush the process.
"Are you feeling any immediate effects?"
Although extremely direct in their questioning, Sucrose spoke softly, the curious nature of their inquiry taking on a more sincere tone than the question alone would betray. While observation was a key feature of scientific study, Barbara was no test subject- She was a friend, and one to be treated with respect and kindness. It was the first time in a while that the researcher had taken out their equipment for something other than a personal agenda. Is this what healing is like in the church?
Unsure whether or not the other would be able to answer their question, Sucrose leaned in slightly to examine her none too subtly, honeyed eyes skimming carefully across her brow and jaw to search for any sign of reduced tension.
@whiterosemilktea
It'd been a while since Sucrose had strayed far beyond the developed territory of Mondstadt's open fields, where one could wander relatively far and still find their way back to the broadly visible capital city. With the towering rise of the central church and it's surrounding windmills, it was hard to miss the town even from the furthest shore. But... visibility became a much broader concern when even the first few feet ahead of you were obscured.
Lost in the woods after making an unwise venture into Wolvendom, the anemo user walked swift and silent, knowing better than to voice their anxiety and risk drawing in any dangerous monsters that were well known to inhabit the untamed forests. They wouldn't be surprised if they had to set up camp for the night, with how little progress they seemed to be making towards home. Even climbing the highest tree hadn't revealed anything more than acres of woodland as far as the eye could see- No sign of the comforting Barbatos who loomed like a stone guardian presence over the land.
With how deep and broad the forest had seemed, it made it all the more confusing when their next steps brought them stumbling into a clearing, a cozy cottage now in view. Blinking in shock, Sucrose gaped for a good moment, unsure whether or not it was safe to approach something that seemed so secure in the middle of so much.... dangerous insecurity. Bait?
Unsure how to proceed, they hovered by the treeline, scrutinizing the cottage for signs of trustworthy life.
