favorite off-screen friendships ♡ katherine mcnamara & emeraude toubia
Well, that was the last time Jessie agreed to a study night with Dylan. Hurrying out of the house, she began walking briskly toward her apartment; she’d walked to school yesterday and Dylan drove her to his place after classes, with the understanding that he would take her home after they finished studying. Of course, their studying lasted a lot longer than she intended and then they fell asleep. And now, she didn’t feel like waking him up or sticking around. “But the night wasn’t a total waste,” she muttered to herself with a little smirk.
“This lipstick? It’s a Sephora Collection cream lip stain, and it’s amazing. I have a color for every occasion, and it’s completely kiss, meal, and blowjob proof.”
“Oh my god, Cherry, it looks amazing. I want some. I wonder how mad Heather would be if I used makeup from somewhere else . . .”
“That’s true. It’d be hard to find someone who doesn’t at least know a bit of gossip about you. Or knows your parents. Or knows somewhere to go where it isn’t getting back to your parents. I watched the struggle with my brother back home,” he joked. “And probably not, because it’s hard to get laid once everyone in your town thinks you’re a creep so people have to stay at least somewhat sane.”
Jessie’s eyes widened as she nodded quickly; she had so much trouble making sure her . . . escapades didn’t make it home to her parents. Not that they would be really angry, but they probably would be disappointed and that was even worse. “Yeah, it’s really hard but so far I’ve been lucky. Plus my parents don’t live in town, so I’m pretty safe most of the time. That makes sense,” she said thoughtfully. “So hopefully we’ll be safe from the creeps then. Mostly, since obviously you ran into one already.”
“Well, yeah. I guess presidents do make the world a better place, everyone except Trump.” he said, scrunching his nose before chuckling. “That is very true. I’d probably never want to leave America if you become president, just so I can boost about the fact that my best friend is the president, y’know.” he joked.
“Oh my god, he’s the worst.” Jessie shook her head emphatically. “I hope that if I were by some insane chance to become president, that I would do better than Trump. I mean, anyone would, right? I’d just be sure to get smart people to help me make all the decisions. You could definitely have bragging rights though.”
“Thanks, Jessie. Really - you sure know how to made a guy feel good about himself,” Caleb replies, tilting his head to look at the girl, one thick brow cocking slightly. He huffs a soft sigh as she speaks, shrugging. “I think… Pancakes. Yeah. Definitely pancakes.”
“That’s me, the girl who builds up men’s egos.” Fighting back a giggle, Jessie waited patiently for Caleb to make up his mind. She hadn’t expected to see him but it wasn’t unwelcome by any means and she didn’t mind buying breakfast for an old friend of sorts. “Pancakes are always a good option.”
Spending his birthday hungover wasn’t really the plan Caleb had, especially not because his mom had gotten him drunk the night before. The lady had drunk him under the table, something kind of unbelievable considering the sheer size different between them - Roxanne barely broke five feet, so to out-drink her six foot something son was something special.
Caleb cradles his hand over his eyes, elbow propped up on the table in front of him. A loud noise makes him jerk, groaning quietly afterwards. “Shhh, not so loud.”
She really didn’t mean to make the chair scrape the floor so loudly but it couldn’t be helped. “You look terrible,” Jessie said unsympathetically as she stared at Caleb. “But since I know it’s your birthday, I’ll buy you breakfast as a present.” Somehow she had managed to keep her voice to a relatively quiet tone as she spoke, which was a minor miracle in and of itself. “What do you want?”
“If this brew was any danker it would be sludge,” the dazed twenty-something mumbled over a cup of chilled coffee. It had cooled off quickly; the warmth of it dulled by the morning air that had rolled in from the frothy sea. That morning, Rose had fashioned herself a cup in hope that it would keep her warm on the way to work. Sadly however, the steam which had risen from the top was no longer present; the naked brew now a discomforting lukewarm forced a grimace to her pouty lips as she sipped distractedly, dreading the hours that were soon to come. Lord, she was too tired to work for even a bit. Tilting her head and angling it towards her company Rose asked, “Maybe you can steal me away for the day? And later, I’ll just tell my boss that my captor ended up being a terribly sweet person and let me go as soon as I begged for it?” Smiling, the brunette took another unsatisfying sip.
“You know, people always think I’m a damsel in distress type of girl, but I bet I could be a damn good villain if I really wanted to,” Jessie said, with more enthusiasm than was probably strictly necessary. “But I would have to know where you work first, because I don’t want to get on the bad side of someone at a place I go to a lot, you know?”
“I’ve had a boyfriend who ended up being a friend for while we were dating but that’s it. And luckily, nope. Most get the idea if I don’t come to the door. And if I was out I just got a friend who would pretend to be with me. We had codewords and everything.” He’d been lucky enough to fall in with a group of friends who showed him the ropes when he moved to the big city. “It might not be too big of a problem in this town though.”
“Awwww . . . you know, it’s probably a lot harder to date someone who isn’t a friend in a town like Frey.” She had known practically everyone for her whole life, so dating a classmate meant dating someone who remembered her embarrassing kindergarten stories. “Wow, that sounds like . . . a lot. At least you had friends to help you.” Frey was looking better and better - although Jessie had inherited a bit of wanderlust from somewhere. She still pictured herself in Frey whenever she thought of the future, though. “I hope not. I don’t ever remember hearing about anything like that, but I don’t know that I would have anyway.”
“Just because it looks like the beach does not mean it looks like a good beach.” She reasoned, shaking her head a little.
“But if you were trying to paint the beach and I recognize it, doesn’t that mean you succeeded? And isn’t that the point?” By now, Jessie actually wasn’t sure why she was even arguing it anymore, but she wasn’t about to give it up.
“Sorry for the delay, Jessie. You know I hate to be late, but was something important.” Sophie said opening Jessamine’s small bag and looking at the new samples of the girl in her front. “Okay, okay! Forget my delay! Let’s start with the makeovers!”
“I guess I can forgive you.” Clapping her hands in excitement, Jessie waved a hand at the samples. “It’s mostly eye shadows again - I think the formula was tweaked a little so it would last longer. But they also have this great new lipstick somewhere . . .” Rummaging through the bag, Jessie pulled out a small tub of bright pink lipstick. “I thought the color was really cute.”
“I mean, there are a lot of reasons of being president, Jess.” he said, laughing a little. “But shoving it in peoples faces is probably one way to go, not a bad one either. The best type of revenge if you ask me.”
“I mean, obviously. Make the world better and all that.” Jessie waved her hand through the air as if that sort of thing were completely insignificant. “But still, it seems like it would be sort of a waste if you don’t show the people who didn’t believe in you that they were wrong. Besides, Tristan, you know me.” She wasn’t the most serious person, and while she did focus when it was necessary, she much preferred having fun.

Do you think Obama attends high school reunions and is like, ‘Oh, hey, Jimmy. remember when you would shove me into the lockers in the 10th grade? Yeah, well, guess what. Screw you, I’m the President.’ because I would if I were president.
“What would be the point of being president if you can’t shove it in the faces of all your old friends? Or not friends, I guess.”
“Sorry, I am a little late. But I had a kind of emergency to resolve before I could come here.” She told to the person in her front, smiling softly. “So what have you planned for us? I hope that was something nice.”
“Sophia,” Jessie said, pulling the name out into a bit of a whine. “You know I don’t like waiting. But you’re here now so that’s good and what I was thinking is . . .” Reaching into her bag, she pulled out a smaller bag. “I have new samples and thought we could do makeovers?”
Renée hummed at the girls reasoning. “I guess you are right there.” She agreed, scratching her head for a moment as she thought. “But you do think it is good, yes?”
“I am,” Jessie said smugly, tossing her head. She did like to be right. She glanced at the picture again, sighing softly before nodding firmly. It would be easier just to say yes, and since it did look like the beach, then it had to be pretty good. “Yes. It looks like the beach.”
“I’ve seen relationships ruin a lot of friendships. Not everyone is Chandler and Monica, even if it does work out for some. I feel like friendships are a totally different ballpark than relationships, but once more, that’s just me.” Plus, breaking it off with someone who wasn’t a friend first was easier. “And if they don’t leave, that’s when you call the cops and hide. And be really quiet so he doesn’t realize you’re actually in there.”
“Okay, that’s true but it doesn’t always happen that way. I dunno, maybe it has to do with what you want too. I mean, if you want your relationship to be more serious then it’s probably better to look for someone who can be a friend too. If you’re not into that though, then it wouldn’t matter so much?” She shrugged, because it didn’t really matter. Everyone had their own opinions and as long as they ended up happy in the end, that was the important thing. “Ugh, that sounds horrible though. Do you have a lot of experience with that?”
