“If we love fiercely, our ancestors live among and speak to us through these incandescent filaments glowing from the warmth of memories. Loving fiercely is real-time legacy building. Maybe that’s the best way to honor people.”
—
Alice Wong, “Ancestors and Legacies” from Year of the Tiger: An Activist’s Life
"There is more to sex appeal than just measurements. I don't need a bedroom to prove my womanliness. I can convey just as much sex appeal picking apples off a tree or standing in the rain." —Audrey Hepburn
“I’m beginning to recognise that real happiness isn’t something large and looming on the horizon ahead but something small, numerous and already here. The smile of someone you love. A decent breakfast. The warm sunset. Your little everyday joys all lined up in a row.”
— Beau Taplin
“When we find someone who is brave, fun, intelligent, and loving, we have to thank the universe.”
— Maya Angelou
Finding out Nikki Giovanni died on my birthday broke my heart a little bit. No one told me. That was a mercy.
Found the quote through @eatmangoesnekkid posting it on here initially, and just had to collage it 🥰
How beautiful! --India
Healing & opening doesn’t mean you’ll never get hurt but it also doesn’t mean you’re helpless against pain. Getting unstuck & becoming flexible & open again means you’ll be able to take in & process any hits you receive through life.
Armor -> “I feel protected against pain but really I refuse to accept that life means pain sometimes & my rigidity makes it impossible for me to process pain”
Healing & flexibility -> “I accept that I can’t make sure I never get hurt. By keeping my tissues healthy I ensure I’m resilient enough to process & heal any pain I feel in the future”
“However much you wanted someone to want you, there was nothing you could do to make it happen. Whatever you did for them, whatever you gave them, whatever you let them take, it could never be enough. Never enough to be sure. Never enough to satisfy them. Never enough to stop them walking away. Never enough to make them love you.”
Manna Francis
To love. To be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and the vulgar disparity of life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all, to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget.
— Arundhati Roy, The Cost of Living
to the young who want to die by Gwendolyn Brooks

jenny holzer's plaques; cast bronze, 1980-1982. "YOU SHOULD LIMIT THE NUMBER OF TIMES YOU ACT AGAINST YOUR NATURE, LIKE SLEEPING WITH PEOPLE YOU HATE. IT'S INTERESTING TO TEST YOUR CAPABILITIES FOR A WHILE. BUT TOO MUCH WILL CAUSE DAMAGE."
jenny holzer, in a dream
“Of course, you never really forget anyone, but you certainly release them. You stop allowing their history to have any meaning for you today. You let them change their haircut, let them move, let them fall in love again. And when you see this person you have let go, you realize that there is no reason to be sad. The person you knew exists somewhere, but you are separated by too much time to reach them again.”
— Chelsea Fagan
Natalie Díaz, from "American Arithmetic", Postcolonial Love Poem
[ Text ID: I am begging: Let me be lonely but not invisible. ]
“The loss of stories sharpens the hunger for them. So it is tempting to fill in the gaps and to provide closure where there is none. To create a space for mourning where it is prohibited. To fabricate a witness to a death not much noticed.”
— Saidiya Hartman (via upwardifly)
