Swim Team Presents: Don’t You Understand?

Don’t You Understand? is an exhibition that investigates the mental processes involved with understanding a piece of artwork. With any piece of artwork, there is the experience of it and what information we take from it. By employing an ethic of ambiguity and a theme of misunderstanding, Swim Team curated an exhibition that by confusing what information is made available, emphasizes the experiential. While a viewer is grappling with the task of understanding a work of art, they are left only with their subjective experience of what is in front of them without drawing any solid conclusions.

Swim Team Presents: The Gold Show

A salon style art installation focusing on gold as concept and aesthetic. The Gold Show celebrates the history of the element as well as cultural associations that remain in our collective identity.

Swim Team Presents: Pip Atkinson, Isabel Legate, Annie Murphy and Elizabeth Rath

The Netherlands Gallery - 2014

Swim Team Presents: Pip Atkinson, Isabel Legate, Annie Murphy and Elizabeth Rath is an exhibition showcasing four emerging artists, two local and two national. Examining contemporary interests from multiple regions, there are commonalities that run through each of their practices in conjunction with more muddled and complex relationships. Collectively the works consider the simulated, the appropriated, the domestic, the material and the commodity through various mediums, methods and ideologies. A comprehensive catalogue will follow this exhibition to further explore the concepts presented by this selection of artworks.

Featuring the work of both local and national BFA students; this exhibition explores drawing as primary raw, and embedded within all forms of visual art.

The works, though varying in materials and dimensionality, are related by a common line that is drawn through media.

Swim Team Presents:

The North End- 2014

The Conception of SIX BY SIX sprouted from having a semi-industrial, vacant space to exhibit work in. This lead to the curatorial challenge of exhibiting various works in a space without the use of walls. In the exhibition, six artists and six designers have come together in collaborative pairs to create six works that solve the common spacial design problem. The goal being that through these collaborative relationships, a product that both individuals equally contributed to will be created. Each pairing showcases a broad range of practices within the exhibition. From painting and drawing to industrial design and architecture to video and performance, each work offers a different set of traits and motives to the exhibition.

Temporary Projections

The North End- 2014

Temporary projections serves as a check point for analyzing the work of eleven emerging video artists. The title reflects the nature of the exhibition: the videos are only to be projected on the night of February the 28th. The space, too, is in transitional period between built and occupied, functioning as an exhibition space for one night only. The work as a whole serves as a point of departure to speak about a wider notion around contemporary video art. That is to say that despite the many iterations of video in daily life, video art is still a distinct form when used deliberately.

MIAD Lobby- 2013

After a summer-long correspondence between Swim Team and artists in Minneapolis and Chicago, we have organized a body of work that highlights a regional pulse of contemporary two-dimensional form. These four emerging artists have been selected by location and media, each bringing their own perspective to the Milwaukee cultural landscape.

Here the subject of two-dimensional form strikes a balance between painting and installation; an homage to the histories of each media, ach with its own set of contemporary concerns. A dialogue between space, texture, color, form, and mark-making exemplify the practices of artists who call the Midwest home.

Swim Team Presents: POOL PARTY

After inviting students, alumni, and the Milwaukee art community to submit work, Swim Team curated this event from the wide selection of performance and video work. As we shaped and organized the sequence of the event, we considered the strong contrasts in subject material as well as the visual and durational oppositions. Pool Party brings together MIAD students and alumni, UWM Film Department students, and Milwaukee community artists to celebrate the wide spectrum of contemporary work being created in Milwaukee in both video and performance mediums.
