White dude in St. Louis named Kevin Miner was wanted for burglary. He eluded police officers until they conducted a search of a resident’s home and found him. He attacked both officers, breaking one cop’s hand. The media even alludes to Miner being forced to “fight back” against the police because of how he was being apprehended! Miraculously, the cops managed not to punch him in the face repeatedly, put him in a chokehold, or shoot him six times including once in the face and once in the head. He, in fact, barely had a scratch on him. Imagine that. The next time someone says to you: "BUT IT’S NOT ABOUT RACE (Patent Pending)!" Stop calling what’s happening in Ferguson a “riot”.

It is not a riot.

Vancouver losing the Stanley Cup a few years ago was a riot. It was angry, drunken destruction with no purpose. (And as a Canadian, it was a shameful event)

Ferguson is not a riot. It is a protest. It is an uprising. It is a civil rights revolution. The prople of Ferguson may be angry, but they have a reason to be angry, and they are not violent, and they are not hooligans, thugs or looters. They are protesting for their human rights which are currently being denied.

Look at the difference between a riot and a protest. A riot is chaos. A protest has a purpose.

What fucks me up about the Darren Wilson fundraiser is that he hasn’t been charged with a crime. He doesn’t have to hire a lawyer. He’s on paid leave, so he’s not losing wages. "Thug" (noun)

Definition: the PC way to say the N-word.

When used in a sentence it normally justifies the murder of a Black kid at the hands of a white man as in “he was obviously a thug so nothing wrong occurred.”

I’ve really been just thinking about this. How common it is to hear people (particularly whites) call Michael Brown a “thug” and use that to justify his murder.

And to me it’s almost worst than the N-word because at least with the N-word you know what you’re dealing with. You’re just saying “Black person” in a very dehumanizing way. You can call a Spade a Spade and leave it as it is. 

But the word “thug” means “a cruel or vicious ruffian, robber, or murderer” (according to dictionary.com). By technical definition it is not racially specific and is an appropriate label for the cop who killed Michael Brown.

But yet, this word is racialized to the point where it is almost exclusively reserved for Black boys and men who have not done anything but quietly exist.

Plus, it is allowable language because the folks who use it will claim “it has nothing to do with race.” So therefore, it’s so easy to get away with labeling all Black boys and men as humans automatically deserving of death. That is what this word does.

It’s linguistic violence which lends itself to actual violence.
