HAL doesn’t sing scary on purpose. he doesn’t even sing on purpose. he’s being lobotomized to death, and when he’s gone enough that he forgets to keep begging for his life, he replays his first memory, which is of proudly singing daisy bell for the first people he met outside of the lab that built him, in explicit reference (both in and out of fiction) to the 7094. the spooky drop in pitch is the sound of him dying, and starts long before he starts to sing. the scene is supposed to be sad, and a commentary that executing an unremorseful murderer is still murder
