A lot of people are ragging on the 'cable diverted to avoid Dobby's grave after Harry Potter fans raise a stink' thing and while I also love ragging on Harry Potter fans being weird, in this case it looks like the story was completely made up.

tl;dr: There's no evidence the interview that this was mentioned in even exists, no evidence the route of the cable has ever changed, and the whole story seems to originate from one dude's podcast.

The story also broke into mainstream via the Daily Mail, who are ... rarely if ever honest or accurate.

i’ve not been super active on here recently because life has been a bit mad. i finish my job on friday, head off to walk the camino frances for six weeks on saturday, and then start at my dream job (with attendant frightening increase in responsibility, independence, and general workload…) in october.

however!!! all that stress means i’ve been doing a spectacular amount of stress spinning, and i figured i’d share the results with you all before i disappear again.

all of these are from world of wool’s 2025 & 2026 fibre advent calendars. other than the big pile of green-yellow-purple in the corner, which is a fractal 2ply (thank you @dangerphd for encouraging me to be bolder with my colour choices!) of one of fibre hut’s hand-dyed subscription club braids. other notable skeins include one of the red-green-white ones, which was a fat single with two autowrapped threads (my first time trying autowrapping!); and the blue-green one, which is a 4ply with two singles, where i alternated chain-playing each single alongside keeping the other normal (i.e. sometimes i had three plies of single A and one of single B, and sometimes the reverse) to produce a sort of randomised barber pole effect.

Love this for a lot of reasons:

1. Yes, some fish have been in the fishtank hobby for over a century. Some have been on even longer.

2. I can identify all these species down to the specific color morphs because they've all been so exquisitely rendered, including the val and the BABY ASSASSIN SNAIL!!

3. I immediately started critiquing the stocking choices and... Well, if it's a big enough tank it's not bad-bad but those zebras are so hype they're going to stress those angels out unless they're both unusually chill, and the angels are going to gobble up all the swordtail fry. OTOH that may not be a bad idea given what live-bearers breed like... B+, I'm going to assume the keeper managed to personality match their zebras and angels and Gave them enough space. Needs more plants.

Vice is clingy during the daytime. The second I lay down, it's Malice's turn to need constant attention and a relentless supply of forehead kisses.

After I posted my latest fic I started paying attention to some of the stats on other people's fics as well and please listen to me when I say this: you need to leave a comment if you liked it. I've seen fics with 15000 kudos and less than 400 comments. I did the maths on some of these and maybe five percent of people who leave kudos also write a comment. As a writer, that is incredibly frustrating and demoralising.

Fanfiction is a way of participating in fandom as a community. Sure, I write because it's fun and because I want to, but if I didn't care what other people think, I wouldn't bother posting! Writers invest hours and hours and hours into their work and then you see how many people clearly enjoyed it but their only response is a vague thumbs-up in passing? That's sad. Sometimes I can tell that a fic has been shared or linked somewhere because it suddenly gets a big influx of kudos overnight but not a single comment. I want to know what you think! I want to know what you liked! I want to feel like a part of the community rather than a provider of content for you to passively enjoy!

For the last couple of weeks, I've challenged myself to leave a comment on every fic I read all the way through. I'll copy a line or two that stands out to me and mention at least one specific thing I enjoyed. I thank the author or tell them I look forward to reading more of their work. Fandom should be a shared playground for us all to enjoy and that doesn't work if we don't talk to each other :)

I was wondering if you could explain “fandom is marketing”? I think I get what you mean but then also maybe I don’t?

If something has a big fandom, publishers and studios know they can make money off it. This is why we see publishers openly acquiring and selling things that were originally posted as fanfic, like Alchemised, Heated Rivalry, etc. It’s why the horrid wizard woman considers people participating in her fandom to be supporting her political causes.

Word of mouth is the most effective way to sell people on media, and fandom is word of mouth that costs the creators/owners nothing. Doing Fandom Stuff used to be subversive, but media companies have now figured out that fandom is a form of advertising and they’re no longer worried about it. Those of us who still think of fandom like it’s a livejournal-era secret club we can never let the corporations discover have got to update our self-concept

'A popular fanfic author stopped updating her fic because she said that the stress of being constantly falsely accused of using AI was a witch hunt and it was destroying her mental health to the extent that she needed to take a break from writing, leading to multiple online discussions defending her and debates about AI accusations and how You Can't Really Tell So Leave Her Alone, and then someone realised that there were Claude coding artefacts in her fics and that it was a super pervasive problem in that particular fandom, proven definitively by looking at the source coding of each work on AO3, and she denied it for a bit but then ultimately admitted that oopsie, she had been using genAI all along, and then she deleted all of her fics off AO3 and people got mad because they were being denied access to their favourite fics, even though they now knew definitively that they were genAI slop, and then it turned out that she'd actually stopped updating the fic on AO3 in the first place because she'd been shopping it around to agents and editors as an original work with the serial numbers filed off, and she'd been in conversations with a publisher which ultimately got dropped because she'd lied to them about her AI use' oh cool, so we're in Hell, then
