anger was an emotion that merlin knew very well. he has battled his anger and given into his anger all the same. it was an emotion that could take over before he knew what was happening and suddenly it was nothing but red rage. but, he also knew that anger wasn’t the only emotion to allow this to happen. and while he had done so for far too long, he’d tried to forget that anger was so prevalent in his mind. “ i think we’re all good at anger, ” he says, picking at a piece of bread on the table. “ we are all born angry. angry at the world for whatever wrong it has done to us. angry at someone for their wrongs against us. always anger. ” but anger wasn’t always the answer, and while it took him many years to learn this, it was still hard to remember some days. “ to be good at other emotional stuff, you have to let the anger go first. ”

a small laugh leaves merlin’s lips as his eyes sweep around the area they were currently in. “ of course this place is cursed -- have you opened your eyes? ” he’s judging, but when was he not? “ this place is not of the human world, nor is it of the fae world. ” it smells...he can smell the magic coursing through the ground, trying to take hold on anything it can manifest itself into. now that he’s stepped foot onto the cursed ground he isn’t quite sure what it is...yet. a sniff of the air, something putrid lingering there that makes him wrinkle his nose and question being there to begin with. “ your bones aren’t lying, but if your mind isn’t strong enough it will soon begin to lie to you. ” a few steps further, one last sniff of the air around them before he turns back to arthur. “ there’s something not of this world that rests here. going through may make you lose yourself. going around will lose days. are you strong enough to endure such a thing? ” was he?
LEONARDO
“well– - perhaps it is time for another one. another portrait, i mean. i have been rather short on interesting subjects, of late.” leonardo shoots him a wide smile over the top of his drink. it is a good question. a very good question, actually. leonardo suspects that he knows. most people do. word travels. how else would they know he is someone that can help? it seems they are both sizing each other up. there’s an excitement buzzing under his skin. it does not get much bigger than this, he thinks. the smile only widens. merlin is prying. not a lot but enough. “i am a shield. of sorts. for those who need one. and an artist. although, if you are looking for a resume, i could write it up right now.” though he is hardly looking for employment. he wets his lips and takes a long drink. merlin is right about that, of course. he did not simply insert himself into his life to ask if he has had his portrait done. though, now that he’s mentioned it… leonardo blinks hard to bring himself back to the task at hand. “i had a query, aside from the portrait, though if you are interested– - no, my query is if you are not otherwise busy… i have– - something you may be very interested in seeing. and i would require a little help. if you are so inclined.” leonardo is not usually in the business of asking for help, but for his current problem, his glider, could benefit from some input. merlin is a genius, he has heard. much like himself. which leonardo thinks will lend itself to an interesting working relationship. or a horrible one. either way, leonardo thinks that perhaps he’ll come away with more knowledge than he came in with. be it to help the fey he keeps hidden in his workshop until they can safely depart to a better place, a safer place. or to help him taste the clouds. he’s dreamt of that his whole life. it feels moderately attainable. “after the drink, of course.”
“ i can’t exactly say no to an artist requesting an interesting subject, i suppose... ” the lives that merlin has lived outweighs those around him tenfold. there’s not much he can say he hasn’t done. and he has, in fact, worked with artists before. some were beneficial to work with while others were just merely insanity on two feet and merlin would prefer not to touch on that side again. though he can say that leonardo doesn’t seem to be leaning toward the latter, so merlin is more interested in what he says than not. plus, the drinks never hurt either.
“ no, no -- i’m not an employer looking for an employee, i won’t need any of that, ” he states with a wave of his hand and follows up with another sip from his cup. merlin watches as the other speaks, doing his best to get a read on the man -- whether he was worthy of merlin’s time or not. there was something about him, and merlin couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but he was inclined to listen to him and not immediately dismiss him on the spot as he did most others.
although merlin had stopped helping people long ago, he was far too interested in what the artist could possibly have. leonardo seemed like a smart man, and merlin was somehow inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt in this situation. “ well -- if you are who, and what, you say you are. i must accept now that you’ve been slightly secretive with what it is. ” merlin did love a good secret, after all. and, if he were a betting man, merlin would think that leonardo was not one to seek other’s help, much like himself. so he was far too invested in just the few sentences to decline now.
there was a new fascination bubbling in the base of merlin’s brain now. not much gave him that anymore, so he was grateful that the artist came along when he did. to give merlin something else to do instead of the day in and day out boredom that he had fallen into as of late. a smile crosses his lips again before he picks up his cup and tilts it toward leonardo. “ after the dink, ” he repeats after the other, tapping his cup and tossing back most of the remainder of his drink.

weight is leaned against his staff as he allows the other to finish his monologue. the bad guys always have monologues, don’t they? “ monk, the one who weeps, ” he says, moving weight to his other side now. “ quite the one to talk about saving lives, aren’t you? ” a scoff followed by a shake of his head. “ you are the one slaying the fae, are you not? while i can’t be bothered to save lives, you are simply taking them, yes? ”

merlin’s brows knit together momentarily before they ease back into place and are followed by a head shake. “ i’m afraid that’s not how this -- or i, work, ” he tells her, unsure of who it is exactly she believes him to be. “ if you want old, expensive books you should go to someone who finds them for you. probably with payment up front -- at least most of it. and i am not that person. ” besides, if the books were good books, he would be keeping them for himself. “ try the larger cities, there’s usually someone needing some extra money around there willing to help. i wouldn’t tryst just anyone though... ”
