Shortwave Radiogram, 11-18 June 2026 (program 453): Official digital modes of the East India Company

A new transmission time for Shortwave Radiogram has been added. It is UTC Monday 0030-0100 UTC (Sunday evening in the Americas) on 5050 kHz from WRMI Florida. The 5050 frequency from WRMI is heard well in Florida and the Caribbean, but beyond those areas reception of 5050 is DX. This provides an opportunity to test our slower text modes. In fact, this time slot will eventually be taken over by "Extreme Shortwave," which will be dedicated to the slow and robust modes -- and usually no images.

Last week, in addition to our usual MFSK32 and MFSK64, we experimented with Olivia 64-2000, a slow (24 wpm) but robust mode, to demonstrate the ability of old analog shortwave broadcast transmitters to convey information in difficult reception conditions. Some transmissions provided several examples of challenging reception at SDR sites.

One example was during the Sunday 1430 UTC transmission, 9955 kHz from WRMI Florida, via an SDR in Michigan. Reception of 9955 in Michigan is typically difficult, but it was made even more so by wide-band interference that covered the upper 65% of the Olivia 64-2000 tones. Nevertheless, the Olivia 64-2000 decoded 100%. The screenshot below shows the mostly unsuccessful MFSK32 text, changing over to the 100% Olivia 64-2000 …

This week Shortwave Radiogram will include Olivia 32-2000 between the MFSK32 and MFSK64 news items. With only 32 tones, it will be less slow (about 48 wpm) than the Olivia 64-2000, but it still might decode well in  difficult reception conditions.  A video of last week's Shortwave Radiogram (program 452) is provided by Scott in Ontario (Wednesday 1330 UTC). Shortwave Radiogram, 4-11 June 2026 (program 452): Some Olivia among the MFSK

Put on your official Shortwave Radiogram white lab coats, because we will be experimenting this week on program 452. After the usual MFSK32 and before the MFSK64, there will be a brief message in Olivia 64-2000 about "Extreme Shortwave," a new project that will be a companion to Shortwave Radiogram.  To receive Olivia 64-2000 (64 tones, 2000 Hz wide), make sure the SQL (squelch) in the bottom right of Fldigi is off. Also, the bandwidth on your receiver should be 2500 Hz if you tune in using sideband, or 5000 Hz with AM. (This should not be a problem with most receivers.) And note that the characters from the Olivia 64-2000 will not appear on your display until a couple of seconds after the tones are heard. If you tune in a Shortwave Radiogram transmission in which reception is poor -- even if inadequate for MFSK32 text -- good! It will be a great test for the Olivia 64-2000. Reception might be so bad that you can't understand a word of my voice introduction. Even if that happens, stay tuned. You probably will need to set the mode to Olivia 64-2000 manually before it begins at 6 minutes, 18 seconds into the program. Shortwave Radiogram, 28 May-4 June 2026 (program 451): End time for CHU

The first news story on this week's Shortwave Radiogram is about Canada's plans to close the shortwave time station CHU in June. Many of us have tuned in CHU over the decades to get a an accurate time reading. In my eastern US location, CHU is often easier to hear than WWV. I have often thought that our MFSK32 modes could be added to CHU or WWV for time and general announcements. In difficult reception conditions, text information is more likely to be conveyed to the listener than a voice announcement. CHU, with its three shortwave frequencies, could be a wonderful laboratory to explore the capabilities of HF, especially as an alternative to the internet, which may not always be "always on." Shortwave Radiogram, 21-28 May 2026 (program 450): Hoping that the hardware works with the software

It has been years since I've updated my version of Fldigi. Earlier this week I installed Fldigi 4.2.11, and I used it to produce this week's program. Let me know if this causes any changes -- better, worse, or just different -- in your decodes. Also different this week is that my Yaesu FT-991A transceiver is back in my shack after its third trip to Yaesu in California for warranty service. I'm looking forward to using it for direct reception of Shortwave Radiogram. And hoping for no repeat of the malfunction. (Yaesu did not tell me what was wrong or what they did to fix it.) Shortwave Radiogram, 14-21 May 2026 (program 449): Digital modes to the Northern Sea Route

Thanks to Al Holt for producing and presenting in last week's program 448. I have wanted to do a Shortwave Radiogram featuring solid colors, so Al made it happen. In your reception reports, the "paint samples" were arranged in patterns that created interesting effects. My wife Jinling and I are back from a week exploring Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, especially the wildlfe. Most days, the guides would have us boarded on the vans by 5:30 am, so as to see the animals when they are most active. We saw grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, coyotes, foxes, elk, pronghorn (traditionally known as antelopes), mule deer, white tailed deer, big horn sheep, mountain goats, eagles, hawks, yellow-headed blackbird, a marmot, a garter snake and, of course, thousands of bison, some only a few hours old. Shortwave Radiogram, 23-30 April 2026 (program 446): Digital modes that avoid slopaganda

Good weather has arrived here in northern Virginia. This will allow me to install an outdoor ground plane antenna for the air band (118-138 MHz) that has just arrived from the supplier in Indiana. A vertical dipole cut for the air band, from the same supplier, did not seem to provide good reception. My friend Mike suggests that maybe the vertical dipole was built too well, allowing too much local VHF interference to overtake the aeronautical communications I am trying to receive. I will have some time this weekend to install the ground plane, and I will let you know the results. Meanwhile, back on HF (shortwave), apologies to listeners for the missing transmission on 5850 kHz Monday at 0800 UTC. I never heard back from WRMI what the problem was. Shortwave Radiogram, 16-23 April 2026 (program 445): Digital modes that should be tried on longwave -- while longwave still exists

It's hot here, 91F or 33C, as I type this. Chances are it's also hot where you are, and obviously too hot for April. A followup on the antenna woes I discussed last week. (Skip this paragraph if your are not into antenna stuff.) The air band vertical dipole that I purchased did not provide good, or even adequate, reception. At first I suspected the connectors at either end of my coax run, either the BNC male that I installed on the inside 18 years ago, or the PL-259 I installed on the outside just a few days ago. I am not brilliant when or comes to installing connectors. Or maybe it was the coax itself, though I reduced it outside by several feet to eliminate any moisture infiltration. So I tried a few feet of wire antenna outside: reception on shortwave (HF) on a Drake SW8 receiver inside was OK. Then I affixed a barrel connector to the outside PL-259, put a banana plug in barrel connector, attached an old telescopic whip antenna to the banana plug. The resulting half-a-dipole worked OK on the air band.   Given that the coax and connectors seemed to be working, the problem must have been the antenna I purchased. I gave the antenna a second chance with a three-foot coax jumper connected to a scanner receiver. Still poor results compared to the whip. Very strange, because what can go wrong with a vertical dipole? Anyway, the antenna company in Indiana has kindly offered to send me one of their ground plane antennas cut for the air band. We'll see how that works. If it doesn't, homebrew. This week on Shortwave Radiogram we transmit the sad announcement from the BBC that they will close their longwave service on 198 kHz, lather this year. Because that facility is dismantled, I would like to find a way to use it to send text, images, and even formatted web pages. Let's see what longwave can do. Also this week, the SaveVOA group requested me to write and submit testimony of the US House of Representatives Appropriations Committee, Subcommittee on National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs, which is considering the Voice of America budget for Fiscal Year 2027. Shortwave Radiogram, 9-16 April 2026 (program 444): Digital modes to all the sovereign territories of the moon

Besides preparing program 444 of Shortwave Radiogram, my week's activities included setting up a vertical dipole antenna, in the back yard, to listen to the air band (108-138 MHz). This would be connected using an old run of coax cable from my bedroom, through the frame of a house addition about two decades old, then underground (inside old garden hose) to the mast. So far the project is unsuccessful. Reception using whip antennas is better than using the new outside antenna. This weekend I will troubleshoot, concentrating on the connectors at both ends. Shortwave Radiogram, 2-9 April 2026 (program 443): We can do umlauts, e.g. lähettää

The change of clocks one hour forward has happened in the countries of Europe that observe Summer Time. Please make sure the conversions from UTC, in the schedule below, to your local time are correct. This time of year, which brings changes in the clocks, also bring flowers here in the northern hemisphere. I had plenty of photos of flowers from which to choose for broadcast. After deleting some daffodils because of the time limit, four images of flowers remain, out of the thirteen MFSK64 images that will be transmitted. This week's show also includes a news story in English from public broadcaster YLE in Finland, about the annual increase of speed limits for the summer. There will be a brief paragraph in Finnish about YLE. It will include sisältönsä and other words demonstrating that we can transmit umlauts on Shortwave Radiogram. Shortwave Radiogram, 26 March-2 April 2026 (program 442): Digital modes that can travel underground, where 100 meters is DX

Most of Europe will move clocks forward one hour this week, but not until Sunday, 29 March. Of the Shortwave Radiogram transmissions usually heard in Europe, the first to be affected by this time change will be Wednesday, 1330-1400 UTC, which will become 1530 Central European Summer Time (CEST) and 1430 British Summer Time (BST). The UTC times, shown in the schedule below, stay the same. Spring is the time for local time changes and also the time for flowers to bloom. This provides us with plenty of brightly colored photos, which are good for cutting through the visual "noise" of shortwave. Shortwave Radiogram, 19-26 March 2026 (program 441): Le mystère de la diffusion bilingue

The big news this week is an order by federal judge Royce Lamberth that the Trump Administration must return all Voice of America employees to their jobs by March 23. It will be interesting to see if this actually will happen, because the VOA headquarters building in Washington DC, after a year mostly unused, may not be in condition for media production. For news about US and other international broadcasting, visit or follow kaedotcom.bsky.social. The second story this week's Shortwave Radiogram is about those VOA employees. It is from France 24. The first story is also from a French international broadcaster: Radio France International. It is in French from the RFI broadcast/podcast L’atelier des médias, produced by Steven Jambot. The topic is the new Persian-language numbers station that shortwave listeners have been hearing lately. Where was 15770? Apologies to those of you who did not hear Shortwave Radiogram Wednesday at 1330-1400 UTC on 15770 kHz from WRMI Florida. The 15770 transmitter went off the air at 1315 UTC and resumed at 1412 UTC, thus conveniently keeping all of Shortwave Radiogram off the air. WRMI tells me the problem may have been related to cooler than usual weather in Okeechobee. We are in the limbo between the Daylight Savings time change in North America, which has already happened, and summer clock time in Europe, which doesn't happen until March 29. Keep track of the difference between your time and UTC (in the schedule below) during this confusing time of year. Shortwave Radiogram, 12-19 March 2026 (program 440): Digital modes that can shift an asteroid's orbit

The change to Daylight Savings Time in North America is now complete. WINB's program schedule stays with Eastern Time. The UTC times for Shortwave Radiogram on 9265 kHz are now one hour earlier, but the same by local time in most of North America. Our transmission Saturday at 2300-2330 UTC on 9455 kHz from WRMI Florida stays the same by UTC, so it's one hour later by local time in most of North America: 1900 EDT, 1800 CDT, 1700 MDT, 1600 PDT. Other changes I mentioned in last week's post. The updated schedule for spring and summer 2026 is below. The European time change does not occur until the end of March. For now, European listeners should note the UTC time changes for WIINB on 9265 kHz and make the necessary adjustments for local time. We had a lively snowfall this afternoon, leaving a dusting on the ground. When I woke up Thursday morning, it was 70F/21C. Within two hours the temperature dropped to 40F/4C. It was even colder by the time the snow started. Still, it was good to see snow, probably for the last time this season. Shortwave Radiogram, 6-12 March 2026 (program 439): Digital modes that could be transmitted by light beams, but shortwave will do

On Sunday, March 8, most of North America moves clocks forward an hour for Daylight Saving Time. For program 439, this affects three transmissions: 1) WRMI's 9955 kHz stays on Eastern time, so the broadcast Sundays changes to 1430-1500 UTC, staying the same by local time in most of North America: 1030 EDT, 0930 CDT, 0830 MDT, 0730 PDT. All other WRMI frequencies used for Shortwave Radiogram stay with UTC, so 2) Wednesday 1330 UTC will be an hour later by local time in most of North America: 0930 EDT, 0830 CDT, 0730 MDT, 0630 PDT.  And 3) Thursday 0930 UTC will be 0530 EDT, 0430 CDT, 0330 MDT, 0230 PDT. The schedule below reflects these changes. There will be more changes to our schedule next week, but that's enough confusion for this week. Shortwave Radiogram, 20-26 February 2026 (program 437): Digital modes that do not (we think) cause temperatures to rise in Greenland

Our experiment last week with Persian text was largely successful. Thank you for your reports. The decodes even worked with signals so weak that the opening voice and music announcements were unintelligible. See this thread on Bluesky for examples from Finland and Australia.  Paul in New York state asked Microsoft Copilot about his reception and decode of Persian text. In its lengthy essay, Copilot stated: "You saw it fill in from the left and push characters to the right because of how FLDIGI reconstructs UTF-8 sequences when they arrive slightly out of order or with timing jitter." Also: "MFSK32 is one of those modes that quietly shows off its engineering when you feed it something difficult — like right-to-left UTF-8 Persian text — and it still comes out clean." Shortwave Radiogram, 13-19 February 2026 (program 346): For World Radio Day, more Persian text

UNESCO's World Radio Day is February 13. The purpose of World Radio Day is to connect ideals of UNESCO somehow to radio broadcasting, which is not always a good fit, especially when considering commercial radio in the United States. The United States has an on-again-off-again relationship with UNESCO, and is not a currently a member. For World Radio Day, the Digital Radio Mondiale Consortium has arranged several shortwave DRM transmissions on February 13. You probably don't have a standalone receiver capable of decoding DRM, but many of the accessible KiwiSDRs can, as well as some SDR software.   On Shortwave Radiogram, we will mark World Radio Day with another excerpt of text in the Persian language, this time in MFSK32. This can demonstrate the value of radio in providing information in adverse conditions -- and the communications environment of Iran (UNESCO member) is certainly difficult. Our MFSK64 text item will be from Reporters sans frontiers (RSF), approving the bipartisan move by the US Congress to restore most funding for the Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and other entities of US international broadcasting.
