LAW OF SYMMETRY For me, lines is an important aspect in photography, for me. There’s a Gestalt psychology technique called the Law of Symmetry, which basically means the human mind is always trying to find balance in visual stimuli. So if we use the rule of thirds and place the subject off center, then we will need a counterpart to help us balance the image. If there’s no counterpart, then we’ve just created horrible balance within our composition. It specifically creates lines of similar objects that we use to lead the eye around the image. This is because, according to the Gestalt law of continuance, when we spot a series of similar elements that form a line or curve, our eyes flow from one element to the next trying to assess the relationship between them. Law of symmetry describes our brain’s tendency to look for symmetries and group objects around this principle. Humans are mostly symmetrical, and this way of things is natural for our perception. It’s also easy to break this law increasing the tension – break the symmetry where it is suggested.
