Sybill Mistry-Trelawney has always known she wasn’t typical. Born the surprise second daughter to a Gujarati pureblood woman disowned for marrying a muggleborn man, she grew up understanding the weight of being atypical. She was never allowed to tell the other children in her neighborhood about magic, her playdates were carefully monitored by her parents, and if she slipped up then she’d not be allowed playdates for a long time. Atypical as she was, Sybill never thought she was somehow strange. Even growing up without a living mother from age six felt normal because she was used to it. Her father, despite a stranger to magic and the Sight until meeting his wife, never made Sybill feel strange for her gift - on the contrary, he asked her to read his palm or his cards often and he encouraged his daughter to explore her gift like it was any other talent.
Was she aware she was different? Of course, it wasn’t until Hogwarts that she understood that different didn’t mean the same thing to her and her father as it did to other people. Including the older sister she once looked up to
When other students would whisper and suddenly stop when she came into sight, she reminded herself that they were just being kids, that this was just a thing kids did and they weren’t trying to hurt her feelings on purpose. First year was spent getting used to hearing half-assed excuses to not sit with her at lunch, or form a study group, or split the treats her father mailed her. Even her older sister ignored her so she wouldn’t embarrass her in front of her friends by bumping into someone and saying, “Oh…I’m sorry your pet just died” or “don’t worry about what the healers say, your dad isn’t dying anytime soon.”
And you know what? Maybe she was okay with that. Friends and clubs were only a distraction from academics. Even the clubs she eventually did join (Astronomy and Charms) were academic based and helped foster her interest in the subjects.
Sybill was part of something beyond this bland earthly realm. The gift of Sight coursed through her veins and if there was anything she remembered about her late mother, it was her love of the Sight, her belief that it was truly a gift meant to be honed and shared, not a curse to be kept under wraps. If there was one thing she could do to be close to her mother and honor her memory it was truly master the Sight. So that is what she set out to do. For the first and as of yet last time in her life, eleven year old Sybill Trelawney went to the Headmaster and requested she be given tutoring from the divination teacher under the condition that she not earn anything below an A in her classes come midterms. The tutoring helped Sybill channel some of the Sight energy into things like tarot readings, palm readings, and tea leaves instead of the embarrassing habit of bumping into someone and blurting out something personal about a schoolmate.
Sybill has changed since first year. From a frightened, awkward little kid with no friends to the calm, still awkward young adult with few but loyal friends and a boyfriend, from someone who lived under control of the Sight to someone who reveled in it, and from the kid nobody wanted to be around to someone acceptable to be seen speaking to…sort of. It’s not quite a 180, that much they have to admit, but they won’t deny that this is a place they didn’t think they’d be five years ago.
Maybe they should wish she was never here at all.
At the end of the school year, Gilderoy and Kingsley, their best friend and their boyfriend, will be leaving for bigger and better things. Gilderoy has already been acting distant. He probably wants to start breaking off the friendship early so he’ll be string free come N.E.W.T.S. Sybill doesn’t blame him. This is her we are talking about. And Kingsley…Kingsley was an interesting case, wasn’t he? Three years together (“together?”) and neither of them had managed to say those three words. It would be kinder to stay silent, despite the words burning at the tip of their tongue, leave whether to end this or continue it up to Kingsley post-graduation, but Sybill is sick of being hopelessly selfless.
What would be so wrong about telling him how they really feel? Why can’t she want things for herself?
gilderoy lockhart; the best friend. sybill spent most of her childhood on her own, so to find herself surrounded with tons of other people around her left her with the need to adapt and acclimate to this new social climate. being in ravenclaw gave her the opportunity to meet like-minded people to herself - people who enjoy logic and deep thinking. it shouldn’t have been that difficult in perspective, but as sybill walked through the halls of the school for the first year of her schooling, she was timid and too afraid to break out of the shell that surrounded her, even when people may have tried. however, during the second and third years in school, she continually had run ins with another ravenclaw by the name of gilderoy lockhart. although she was still hesitant in terms of branching out, gilderoy simply wouldn’t take no for an answer. he was relentless in the terms of wanting to talk to her and know her and being around her. he was interested in having his palm read or finding out about what his tarot cards could’ve said, and constantly wanted to know what sybill had to say. it was the first time that she could remember anyone actively seeking her attention out, and it felt wonderful. as the two of them continued to spend more time together, sybill found herself more and more trusting in him, talking more and leaning on him for support more - rather than just focusing on herself. the two are very close, not letting a day go by in which they don’t speak to each other or confide in one another. lately, though, sybill can’t help but notice that gilderoy has been acting differently around her. he’s quieter, almost uncomfortable when it comes to the two of them having conversations with one another, and always is avoiding the opportunities to spend time with her and kingsley. sybill is tempted to ask gilderoy what’s wrong or if something has happened, but every time she tries to bring up the topic, he changes it immediately or suddenly remembers something that he has to do. she wonders if he is no longer interested in being friends with her or has finally started to side with everyone else on how she’s a freak - the thought of both capable of breaking her heart. she’s wracked her brain to try and figure out what could possibly be driving gideon away from her, but consistently comes up empty handed.
pandora selwyn; the confliction. it’s no surprise that pandora is known for being everything that sybill is not, and that’s been made clear time and time again from their interactions. sybill is reserved and quiet, a sharp contrast to pandora’s overwhelming enthusiasm and outgoing nature. sybill enjoys her solitude and her meditative personalities, where pandora seems to thrive off of interactions with other people. the two of them met on the first train that they took to hogwarts, pandora constantly talking sybill’s ear off about what laid ahead of them. it was so much of an overload of interaction, that sybill immediately closed herself off to the other girl. however, the strangest thing was that pandora wasn’t easy to shake off, someone who was consistently trailing after sybill. this is something that hasn’t let up over the past six years, which only causes sybill to question things more - and draw further into herself, leaving her wondering if there’s some sort of ulterior motive to pandora’s interest in her. pandora is saving seats for her in class, or seeking her out in the dining area, or trying to convince sybill to spend time with her, but sybill just wants pandora to leave her alone. with the time that’s passed between them, and pandora refusing to give up on trying to get to know sybill, sybill has yet to reciprocate. the other girl is definitely persistent. the fact still remains, however, that all this time sybill has wondered what it would be like to have more friends. yet here she had this one person right in front of her who is actively looking to befriend her, and she can’t take the plunge. she’s questioned herself a lot of times on what could possibly be holding her back, but it always comes back to the same idea, no matter how many years or how many friends have passed - that sybill still cannot understand why someone would want to befriend her, and so does not believe it.
kingsley shacklebolt; the true love. they originally met through gilderoy - as sybill was his closest friend, and kingsley was his roommate, so the three of them were consistently hanging out around each other day after day. and for a while, it remained like that, the three of them inseparable and always together. but as time continued to pass, sybill realized that there was air between her and kingsley that was nothing like the dynamic that already existed between her and gilderoy. with gilderoy, she saw him as something akin to a brother, a beautiful foil to her own personality. however, with kingsley - it was something new and different, something that left her cheeks glowing pink and her stomach tumbling as soon as she saw him. it was something that she wanted to disappear, the inking feelings of attraction. sybill may not have had experience with love or relationships, but she’d read enough books to understand what it meant to fall like that for someone who was completely and utterly out of her league. kingsley was wonderful - well-liked among everyone in their house and someone who was relatively popular. more than that, kingsley was someone that she enjoyed to have in her life, and to confess something like feelings for him would only throw a wrench into that. however, she ended up not needing to say anything at all, as one day out of the blue, kingsley took her by surprise and kissed her. they had been sitting by the lake, moments after gilderoy had left the two of them behind, and kingsley leaned over out of nowhere to kiss sybill. it was everything that she had dreamed of, and everything she thought she’d never get. but from that point on, the two of them only grew closer and closer, starting to dated during her third year. with her sixth year coming around, three years having passed in their relationship, sybill is slowly wondering if she’s ready to say those big three words to cement their relationship. she believes that she’s in love with him, and only wants to think more and more about their future relationship, but in the same vein, saying something like that is a big commitment, and one that she’s not sure that she’s ready for.
septima vector; the accidental vision. with her abilities and her inexperience, sybill’s talents as a seer is something that she’s recently been trying to get under control. slowly and surely, she’s getting more strength in terms of her control, with every passing day she’s finding more balance and precision in seeing her premonitions. but when the acumen isn’t there, all it takes is someone to bump her in the corridor, and it’s as if she’s seeing right through their eyes - perhaps even seeing things that they haven’t even seen before. when this happens, she usually will keep her voice quiet and what she sees to herself, as there’s no point in spreading the tales of what’s unknown. in her mind, this is just creating more unnecessary chaos. but then she found herself on the side of a vision from septima vector, and it was a completely different experience. people knew what happened to septima in the girl’s first year at school, of the accident that had taken place by the lake. the whispers were around the corridors and in the ravenclaw common room for weeks and months to follow - especially because no one was aware of who was behind the unfortunate mishap that had caused the damage, and no one was willing to step forward. septima had carried on, though, a different girl than the one that had entered the school but one that knew she’d leave hogwarts stronger than when she came in. when sybill found herself in close proximity with the girl one afternoon, her guard was down, and the vision happened before she even had the chance to react - experiencing the afternoon that had changed septima’s life through her eyes. but then, she saw more, the visions flashing before her eyes, and getting a glimpse of a figure running away from the scene as quickly as possible. the culprit. sybill knows who is behind the accident, and she could easily point them out to septima, just as she could easily point them out to the administration. she’s not sure if it’s something that she should come forward with, knowing that it could damage the person’s life from here on out. but the longer she sits on the truth, though, the more uncomfortable she grows - as it leaves guilt within her as well.
