MacCready Week 2026, Day 1: Lamplight

I put this piece through a few more passes for the prompt today. This one was loosely inspired by the opening scene of Grave of the Fireflies, a film (based on a book) about the consequences of war on children.

did another speedy redraw-paintover, this time of MacCready on a bicycle with a baby Duncan

i believe the person in the photograph who is on the motorcyle is a woman/the mother of the baby, as they are wearing a scarf over their head in a protective/warming way that wasn't necessarily popular fashion for japanese men. likewise, worldwide women who drove open-top cars and motorbikes in the 20th century often wore scarves over their head and hair to protect their hair from the elements, but it wasn't very popular with the men.

the people who made vines where they represented their moms and girls by putting rags and towels on their head were onto something 🤔
