It didnât matter, he knew it didnât matter to him â like she didnât matter. Yet, there he was, wasting his time on a stranger who was the opposite of anything he appreciated in someone. Sydney was frustrating to him, a soft creature in severe denial, and one he couldnât simply shake. He wanted to be rid of her, but even in that moment when he was irritated by her words, he didnât walk away. It was, he supposed, the mystery of it all that kept him around. He knew her, that wasnât debatable; he felt like he knew her, but the memory of Sydney was lost somewhere at the back of his head. How could he be so certain of it if he didnât? There was a familiarity to her that bothered him, and it was the question that made him stand there and fight the urge to leave and never see her again.Â
âDoesnât it?â There was challenge on his tone, a reflection of his frustration. He tightened his jaw, feeling the growing need for violence. One, two, three quick steps and he was grabbing her by the throat, pushing her back into the wall behind her. âHow about a crash course then?â Henryk wrapped his free hand around her forearm and snapped it, the sharp cracking of bones followed the quick motion. He smiled at the look on her face. âDoes this make sense to you?â He asked once she started healing, his voice thick with sarcasm. âDo you feel enlightened?â
She didnât know why he wanted her to understand whatever it was he was talking about. She didnât know why he cared. At this point, however, Sydney was also past caring. Thatâs what she told herself anyway, the unease and fear that settled in around him because of the unknown coupled with the strange draw he had was enough to let the blonde know he was not someone she should be around. The blonde mightâve left too, thrown up her hands and just left but then he was right there when a moment before he hadnât been. She didnât have time to suck in air she didnât need before his grip was around her throat and her eyes filled with panic and then pain as bones snapped and she cried out, pawing at his hand with her free one. âWhyâre you...doing this.â She rasped before digging her nails into his wrist as hard as she could in a last-ditch effort to gain freedom from his grip on her neck and, knowing that wouldnât do the job, she kneed him as hard as she could, at least trying instead of just standing there, acting as helpless as she felt.. While she didnât know what was going on or what he was, she knew that distance was the safest thing for her right now.Â

âIs that weird?â Chase frowned. âBecause it tastes great. Maybe you should try some?â He offered his fork to the blonde. âYou might be pleasantly surprised.â
"I mean...I..uh, whatever you like? Kinda just reminds me of, you know, baby food....because thatâs what they eat...mashed up veggies.â She shrugged, though, eyeing the fork with a shake of her head. She didnât have much of an appetite to even try pretending she wanted...regular food. âMaybe if you had some, uh, chips or something....could pretend itâs guacamole or whatever.â

It was his first night âhuntingâ since Halloween, though really it was more recon than anything. He wasnât yet prepared to do anything, or be as reckless as he had been, and so the night ended rather quickly. A few mental notes and a couple of non-alcoholic beers downed⌠a good night. Until he made his way to the second bar, sure to avoid Pandemonium without backup, and saw that familiar blonde head. A Baby Vampire, not only unable to control her urges but completely unpredictable. One that needed to be put down. If only they werenât in publicâŚ
Seeing her brought back the memories of a horrendous night, one where heâd had to make certain decisions that made him want to vomit in disgust with himself, and that internal struggle wanted to make itself known in his physical actions. Since she couldnât use her vampiric abilities in public, he made use of the need for pause and walked over, grabbing hold of her arm firmly in one hand, the other hovering over his jacket, where his stakes waited.Â
âGive me one good reason not to kill you right nowâŚâ It was an empty threat, since Kyle would never attack around humans, but little was standing in his way for him to drag her into an alley and sink a wooden stake through her heart. Yes, he was alive, but it was no thanks to her.
Sydney blanched as his hand wrapped around her arm and she shook her head. âI donâtâ I didnâtââ the blonde swallowed, blue eyes holding a type of guilty panic she didnât ever think sheâd feel. Of knowing sheâd done something wrong but not knowing how to make it right or fix it. âIâm sorryââ she whispered hoarsely, pulling at her arm. âI didnât...I didnât know.â What would happen when she smelled his bloodâ when sheâd tasted it. How could she have known? Even know being in proximity to him made her throat burn and she didnât know what to do without making a scene. âI didnât mean to hurt you.â A pathetic addendum to her already pathetic apology. How long could she plead ignorance without being culpable for her own actions?
chaseofthesea:
âHonestly, Iâve said it before and Iâll say it again. Whoever thought of mashing up vegetables deserves a handshake. Have you tried this? Itâs amazing.â
â...are you, uh....literally just eating...mashed vegetables?â Sydney scrunched her brows together, shaking her head, âI, um...you know, usually prefer mine whole...like, in a salad whole...not like eating a whole cabbage whole...â

It seemed like his retirement hadnât been taken well by all since he was summoned to the hotel by a former client in need of a favor with a heartbeat. Henryk met the woman, she seemed to be disappointed by the news. She hadnât believed it until the vampire himself confirmed he was no longer in the business. What a shame. He left her with a reference, but before he could leave the establishment, something called to him â a familiar pull that took him straight to Sydney.Â
ââThanks for the drink last time, Henryk, it was the best person Iâve ever had.â Oh, youâre welcome, Sydney.â Henryk made his way over to the blonde as he spoke, the smile on his face was nonchalant. âReally appreciate the gratitude there, itâs always good to have my generosity recognized.â He came to a stop in front of her, lowering his sight to the towel she held in hands. Her voice was nervous, her grip was tight. Was she afraid of him? Why? âStrange career choice. Then again you donât even know what you are, Iâm not surprised you donât know what to do with yourself either.â
She took a half step back which was exactly the opposite of what she felt drawn to do. Everything about Henryk pulled her in but not in a way that Sydney was comfortable with. It was more so something instinctualâ like being lost in a crowd and the first person you tried to find was a parent. A guardian. He didnât seem like a guardian though and his words caused that same twisting of her gut they had Halloween. âWhy does it matter to you?â She looked at him expectantly, reluctantly releasing her grip on the towel and placing it on the cart with other towels and little hotel shampoos and soaps. âYou wonât leave me alone but every time we talk you just...you say these things and it doesnât make any sense.âÂ

Sydney shouldâve kept to herself. Itâs what sheâd been doing until Halloween when she decided to attempt to be normal for once. But normal was gone and all she got was regret and remorse and a slap in the face with reality. That she was something else entirely, even if there was a part of her that wished to fight that truth. But being around people...it felt less lonely, even if she stayed on the outside, removed but somewhat present. And she thought this was alright, lingering on a bench outside a busy bar, just like a few smokers were another bench or two down, nothing out of the ordinary until he walked out and she felt herself freeze as he seemed to cast his gaze in her direction. âYouâre alive...â words breathed mostly for herself because sheâd bolted before seeing the end result, uncertain of what would happen to the man whoâd done nothing more than bump into them...whoâd done nothing to deserve what had happened. Almost immediately the blonde was standing, eyes almost obviously scanning for an escape route as he beelined toward her.Â

âNever apologize for having a need,â Ash offered delicately, wiping her hands on her work apron and moving closer to the blonde. âI do, yes. Obviously I donât have everyone out of season bloom, but I think I have a fairly decent selection. What were you looking for?â
Sydney paused, perhaps not expecting the otherâs easy going manner. âRight, well, uh, do you have calla lilies?â She enjoyed sketching them most and for some reason sheâd felt the urge to draw again the past few daysâ perhaps to take her mind off other things. âAre these for theââ she cleared her throat, uncertain of if it was polite to ask, âI just heard that, uh, thereâs going to be a...memorial is all.â The blonde didnât really understand a lot of the whisperings going on around town but she knew that loss was loss and families were certainly feeling it right about now.

She didnât know how heâd found out where she worked but Sydney had done her best to cast Halloween night from her mind for all the reasons the town was trying but also for her own sanity. What sheâd done that night had been unforgivable and yet she couldnât help but think of that blood...and then sheâd snap out of it. Sheâd tell herself she was going crazy and that she was sick and needed a doctor but she never went to find one. Because she knew they couldnât fix this. Whatever this was, Sydney knew deep down that she was stuck no matter how she denied it. And she didnât know why this man, why Henryk kept popping up, why she felt herself aware of him the instant he was in vicinity and why, despite wanting to run in the opposite direction because he scared her, she didnât. She couldnât. Her feet stayed planted on the ground as she held a towel in her arms. Sheâd just begun to fold it, only halfway through her shift when she heard him approach and blanched, unable to move. So thatâs where she was, in jeans and a baggy sweatshirt, hair pulled up and an apron around her waste with cleaning supplies. âI donât...I donât know what you want,â her voice probably betrayed her nerves but she balled her fists under the towel, away from his gaze, âbut...Iâd like you to leave me alone please.â Thereâ sheâd said it, words that seemed confident enough were it not for the slight tremor of her voice, recalling the way heâd reacted to the manâs pain without care or pause. But...so had she. And that made it worse.Â

November 4th, 2017. 4pm. The Stalk Market flower shop. Ashbourne, Nova Scotia
Nobody liked an even playing field. Not vampire or werewolf, not fae or merfolk or any other creature. To be leveled so effortlessly, for the massive deaths to cross species without favoritism or mercy, was unsettling. Ashley didnât get goosebumps often, but staring at withered husks of her own kind at the morgue had elicited that exact response. The danger had made itself clear here, pointed out that no one was immune to it, and though she sometimes fell into depressive daydreams of her own end, Ash knew that she wanted to be the one to make that call. She most definitely did not want some volatile magical darkness taking her out.
The shop called to her attentions, being the only flower distributor in town meant that they had a heaping helping of mourning arrangements to put together for those who would be having funerals. Condolence arrangements for loved ones trying to breathe past the heart ache as well, and of course the Mayor wanted lots of appropriately sympathetic arrangements for the vigil on the 5th. Without thought sheâd dived into work, because this whole mess was just another tally on the list of things she couldnât figure out how to fix, but flowers she could handle. With her shears in hand and ribbons ready to tie stems she could demonstrate the tiniest bit of control on her small corner of the town.
At the front of the shop the bell tinkled. Ash wouldnât admit that she was tired, that she was still wearing the same clothes sheâd flown back to town in, that sheâd slept on the daybed in the backroom because sheâd been too tired to trek upstairs to her apartment. Her eyes started to dart upwards, and she blew a wisp of blonde out of her face as she straightened.Â
âIf youâre here to request an arrangement itâs going to be a while. As you can see weâre slightly overwhelmed.â
âI uh... sorry,â Sydney began, standing awkwardly by the door. She realized it was close to closing and the woman seem to have an abundance of work (which made sense all things considered), so Sydney decided to be quick. âI was wondering if you...uh, carry out of seasons flowers ever?â Some places did back in DC which was helpful to Sydney whenever she fancied drawing her favorite blooms in the wrong season as she did now.
