No More Laughs
It had been the longest day of her life, without much to do but wait. She couldn’t take her eyes off the clock, which only made time go by slower, every tick making her wonder how Kid was doing. The distractions she had planned to have with Patty were barely working for any of them. Patty even managed to have a little break down when they were watching TV, and the sisters ended up curled together while watching a stupid reality where everyone looked so happy and dandy it made Liz want to barf. Life wasn’t like that… Well, at least hers had never been that lucky. And now there was also a chance for them to loose the boy that meant the world to them. The one who had done everything for them.
Afternoon rolled by, with Patty ending up fast asleep on the living room couch. Liz decided to leave her there while she went to grab something to eat. Her appetite had finally awakened, so she went back to the kitchen to make herself something to eat. With the sound of the TV and her own thoughts buzzing in her head, she had not heard the door when Kid arrived. The plate with a sandwich that was on her hand fell to the floor, crashing in a million pieces once she turned, just to find him standing there.
Liz had to blink a few times as she just looked at him like someone who had just seen a ghost. Was she dreaming? Cause if she was, she didn’t wanna wake up. His hair and eyes had changed slightly, but other than that it was still him. Physically, at least.
After her brain finally processed it, her body finally responded and started moving again. “Kid.” she tried to say, but it came out in a fainted whisper before she just crossed the room and launched herself forward to hug him tightly. Tears were already rolling down her cheeks, getting his black jacket a little damp on the shoulder.
Kid stepped in the kitchen and saw Liz drop the plate at the site of him. He looked at the plate while Liz stood there, processing the change in himself. He remembered being who he was. He remembered the madness of order, but it was no longer there. The plate shattered, and its mess didn’t bother him. As Liz came forward, Kid smiled. He really was human.
Kid held Liz against his shoulder, patting her back softly. He knew that his weapon cared, and he could respond to those feelings in kind. He looked down at the plate again, and tears formed in his own eyes. Kid had never realized that this sensation was how humans felt tears. He had remembered them before as a sort of simulacrum of emotion, but to actually feel them made him feel that much closer to his weapon.
“Liz,” Kid whispered, barely above her cries. “I am sorry I worried you, but the ritual... It was successful. I’m human. In all the ways I never could be before.”
Kid laughed, and it was a laugh that was more warm than when he had been a Shinigami. It was a laugh that was inviting and friendly and cracked with his voice. It had emotion. “I... I’m feeling things I’ve never felt before, Liz. I don’t know how to describe it. My chest is light, and the plate... The plate doesn’t matter to me at all. Of course, I’d like to clean it up so that no one will hurt themselves on the shards, but that’s all. It doesn’t bother me.”
Kid hugged Liz tight. “Things are going to be very different now.”
No More Laughs
She looked up when he lifted her chin, meeting his golden eyes. Liz took a second to think about it before slowly nodding her head. “Okay.”
——–
The days passed without any of them touching the subject again, besides some information provided to both Liz and Patty by Kid and Lord Death himself. The pistols needed to know what the whole thing was about, but other than that, they didn’t really talk about it. Mostly because neither Liz, nor Patty wanted to ask anything, afraid of the answers they could get. It was a silly thing to do, and they knew it, but they just didn’t want to worry too much about it. Lord Death had told them it was gonna be alright, and they had put their trust in him.
Kid was gonna be okay.
Finally, the day arrived, and that morning the pistol woke up with her heart in her throat. She hadn’t been able to sleep much, and at around 8am Liz just decided to get out of bed, giving up already. It was impossible to get some rest when there was so much on her mind. She made her way down to the kitchen to get some water. Liz walked over to the window that lead to the backyard with the glass in her hand, looking at the pretty, warm morning that fell upon Death City. “It’d be better if it was raining…” she mumbled to herself, consumed in thoughts.
Kid spent the days before the ritual in his room alone. He wondered if it was childish for him to want to be human. He had never had a mother or any human experiences to cling to in his life. Perhaps he had romanticized humanity more than he should have. No matter whether he was Shinigami or human, he would still be himself, right? But who was he without the blood of a God in his veins?
Questions about his own identity flooded his thoughts until the day came. Kid wasn’t at the mansion to be with Liz. No, he had chosen to take on the ritual by himself. If something did go wrong, he wanted her last memory of him to be something other than pain. His father asked him one last time before performing the ritual. Kid said it was what he wanted, and Lord Death went through with it.
Above the city, the sun was clouded over and lightning struck the Shibusen. The ritual was completed. Rain fell hard as Kid walked back to the mansion alone, having no words for his father. He needed to be alone. His eyes were now hazel rather than golden, and his hair was jet black. The Lines of Sanza were gone. He felt weak, but he was consumed with a desire to see Liz. He walked toward her, not having lost any of the memories of who he had been, even if that person was no longer there.
No More Laughs
She wasn’t exactly okay with it, but if it really was what he wanted, and if he was sure it would come out just fine, then it was okay. “I… I trust you.” Liz replied, looking over at him. “If you say your father won’t let anything happen, then it’s okay.”
Kid nodded. "Okay. I'll have my father begin preparing the ritual. It will probably be a few days before the preparations are complete. If you don't mind, I'd like to meditate beforehand. If I have any doubts, I'll let you know."
He walked over to her and took her chin in his hand. "Thank you for trusting me, Liz. It means a lot to me. Just please be honest with me after the change. If it affects you negatively, I don't want to stay human, okay?"
"Hey you awake?"
Kid turned over, surprised to see Liz in bed with him but not bewildered. “Yes. Is everything okay?”
“Mmhmm..” she mumbled, slowly nodding her head with her eyes still closed. It was pretty amazing how they could connect so easily, making her feel more comfortable than ever before. She didn’t want it to stop, she could just stay like that forever. “It feels good.”
Kid fell asleep like that, and he had never slept in such a way before. It was the most intimate connection he had ever had with someone. And he hoped it would last...
No More Laughs
“O-oh… I see.” she said in a low voice, looking down at her hands with a small nod. “I just don’t want anything bad happening to you.” her voice was a whisper, but she was sure he had heard her. “But if that’s really what you want, then I won’t stop you. Just… be careful, okay?” Liz finally looked up at him with a bit of worry, almost like a mother would when knowing her kid was about to do something dangerous. But despite her worries, she would be lying if she said she wasn’t curious about it. Something really made her wonder what Kid would look and act like as a complete human. Would it really change him that much?
Kid looked her in the eye. “Then you’re okay with it if it’s what I want?”
He had thought about this for a long time. It was time for him to make his decision. “Of course I’ll be careful. My father won’t let anything happen during the procedure. After the procedure... We’ll have to see. I don’t know what this will do to my abilities as a meister. But it is reversible. If it is all bad, I can go back to being a reaper in a week or so...”
"Hey you awake?"
Kid turned over, surprised to see Liz in bed with him but not bewildered. “Yes. Is everything okay?”
“I think we found it.” she mumbled as she buried her face a little in his chest, feeling their souls resonating as well. It felt so natural and so soothing. He made her feel so secure.
Kid’s awareness of his physical self melted away, and he focused on the symmetry of their souls. It wasn’t often that he resonated with just Liz. Somehow it felt more... intimate. “I... don’t know how to describe this, Liz... What I’m feeling. Do you feel it too?”
"Hey you awake?"
Kid turned over, surprised to see Liz in bed with him but not bewildered. “Yes. Is everything okay?”
She looked up at him with an arched eyebrow, not believing he had actually proposed that. “I don’t think that’d be comfortable for any of us, Kid.”
Kid thought about it again. And realized the difficulties. "There must be some way to have some balance."
He put his arm around her, held her close, wondered what he could do. Then he felt his soul reach out to hers. To create balance between them. It was almost magical how light his heart felt.
"Hey you awake?"
Kid turned over, surprised to see Liz in bed with him but not bewildered. “Yes. Is everything okay?”
Liz opened her eyes again, a grunt escaping her throat as she remembered his little issue with symmetry. “Crap, I had forgotten…” just when she had finally found a comfortable position. “Well, you’re the genius, what do you think we should do?”
Kid thought about it briefly. "Perhaps you should lay on top of me? Would that be comfortable for you?"
"Hey you awake?"
Kid turned over, surprised to see Liz in bed with him but not bewildered. “Yes. Is everything okay?”
“Not really.” She said, placing her head on his chest and closing her eyes as she yawned. “I was actually gonna go to Patty but she’s snoring like a bear right now… That’d only make it worse.” and the sound of his heartbeat was pretty calming to her.
Kid felt strange, but it was due to the lack of balance. "Well, if you're going to sleep here... How are we going to make things symmetrical? There are limited options... And I don't mind you sleeping here, but... I need my rest as well."
Kid wasn't thinking so much about what he was proposing, getting closer to Liz. For some reason, their proximity didn't bother him. He was only worried about their symmetry.
"Hey you awake?"
Kid turned over, surprised to see Liz in bed with him but not bewildered. “Yes. Is everything okay?”
She smiled and snuggled next to him, getting comfortable on his bed. “Yeah, I;m just having trouble falling asleep.”
Kid gave her some room. “Oh, I see... So, you want to sleep here? You don’t feel strange about that?”
Kid didn’t know how to react. This wasn’t like Liz, but he didn’t mind the change...
No More Laughs
Knowing that the both of them had helped Kid with his little problem was comforting for her, but she still knew it was not enough to cure him. And probably nothing would ever cure him completely, because mental issues were hard to deal with. She too had her own, and she knew how hard they were to handle.
“D-die..?” Liz repeated in a fainted whisper, her heart beating faster with the idea of him dying. She wouldn’t know what she’d do without him. Kid was her everything as much as Patty, they both were family to the pistol, and if anything happened to any of them, Liz would probably die. She didn’t think she could handle another loss. Her mother leaving them was more than enough. “I don’t know, Kid… It all sounds so risky, and I really don’t know if I would want you to take the chance just for my sake…” she bit her lower lip again and looked down while thinking about it. Was it really so important for him to become a human?
"It's not just for you, Liz," Kid said, walking to the window, reminded of the broken one in the foyer. "If it was only for your sake, I wouldn't be considering it so strongly. You mean a lot to me, but... This is as much for myself as anyone else. I would die for you in an instant, Liz, but I can only risk my life in this instance for myself."
He turned back to her, a determined look in his eyes. "I don't know if I'm capable of keeping this up. What happens when I freeze up, and you get hurt? How could I live with myself?"
Kid closed his eyes, imagined what it would be like to be human. "I almost think it would be nice at this point to experience mortal danger. I don't even know if I'm capable of dying in my current state. At least, not dying to anything less than the Kishin..."
"Hey you awake?"
Kid turned over, surprised to see Liz in bed with him but not bewildered. “Yes. Is everything okay?”
“Hey, you awake?” (YOU ASKED FOR IT. NOT REALLY BUT HERE IT IS?)
Kid looks up slowly, trying to gauge his surroundings. There’s someone in his bed. He feels over to the other person. Someone male. “I… Uh… Soul?” ((What is our life? lmao))
The scythe felt something touching his face, slowly he woke up. Carefully, he patted around his face, feeling the hand. “Mmm..Kid? Kiiid, what are you doin’?” He slowly wiggled away but he was too tired to do much more than that.
Kid remains asleep, his head drifting to Soul's shoulder as Soul wiggles away. Kid whispers in his sleep. "Liz, your skin is so soft. Have you been using my moisturizer again?"
“Hey, you awake?” (YOU ASKED FOR IT. NOT REALLY BUT HERE IT IS?)
Kid looks up slowly, trying to gauge his surroundings. There’s someone in his bed. He feels over to the other person. Someone male. “I… Uh… Soul?” ((What is our life? lmao))
Soul shifted a bit. It was still new to him to share a bed but it wasn’t too bad? At least Kid had a big bed, not a little one like he did.
Kid slept for a couple of hours without incident. But then he cuddled up to Soul in his sleep, cupping Soul's face in his hand.
“Hey, you awake?” (YOU ASKED FOR IT. NOT REALLY BUT HERE IT IS?)
Kid looks up slowly, trying to gauge his surroundings. There’s someone in his bed. He feels over to the other person. Someone male. “I… Uh… Soul?” ((What is our life? lmao))
Soul rolled into the bed, pulling a blanket over himself. “Shhh, Kid. Go the fuck to sleep. We can talk in the morning.” Well, it wasn’t like he could just roll into bed with the girls. And no way in hell was he going to sleep on the couch or the floor. His rich ass was too good for that.
That’s right. It’s a sleepover. Nothing like what his imagination was running wild with. Kid settled back into bed, mirroring Soul’s body position in bed as best he could. Everything needed balance. Even two friends sharing a bed. Kid closed his eyes, and he hoped that he wouldn’t get handsy in his sleep...
“Hey, you awake?” (YOU ASKED FOR IT. NOT REALLY BUT HERE IT IS?)
Kid looks up slowly, trying to gauge his surroundings. There’s someone in his bed. He feels over to the other person. Someone male. “I… Uh… Soul?” ((What is our life? lmao))
“It’s cold, man. Scoot over.” He lightly pushed on Kid, “I’m like..tired and shit.”
Kid complies with the request and moves over. "I... You... Soul?"
