I also don’t get the whole “no I need SPECIFICALLY this closed herb for my practice” thing from people out of tradition because, like, way to ignore your own local herbs. Do you think your ancestors wondered how to get palo santo or white sage they haven’t even seen? No, they researched into their local herbs and plants - and worked with what they had. You local dandelion or a wrap of fresh artemisia has the exact damn same magical power if you know what you’re doing.

Atypical Deity Work Ideas

Tired of the same few examples of deity work? Here's a fresh list for you to take a peek at!

Make a devotional playlist. This could be songs that remind you of them specifically, songs you think they'd like, or songs that are reminiscent of the culture/time they come from.

Learn a skill or topic related to them. God of harvest? Browse the Farmer's Almanac! God of sleep? Learn about the different stages of sleep. God of light? Learn about light waves. God of darkness? Learn how to do shadow puppets.

Create a digital space for them. This can mean making a digital altar, creating a room themed after them in Animal Crossing, making a Google doc about them, creating a Notion page, or devoting a blog to them.

Make a collage! It could be a digital or physical collage, but slap some elements together that remind you of the deity or just make a collage that you think they'd enjoy aesthetically. Folks also call this a moodboard!

Create a list of items you personally associate with them. Then write why you associate these items with them. EX: I associate dandelions with Lugh because for a while I thought Lugh was Loki and dandelions tend to be associated with Loki lol.

Read a book you think they'd enjoy. It could be one you think they'd like based on their mythology or purely based on your intuition.

Invite them to watch a movie with you. Movie night, anyone? For real, though, get some popcorn or other movie snacks and drinks ready and let them know that they're more than welcome to watch the movie with you!

Make a language for them. This works best for written language, and requires a lot of time, patience, and energy, but wouldn't you be stoked if someone made a whole conlang for you?! You can even go the extra mile and write to them in that language. There are ways to turn these into fonts as well.

I sought the gift I called the magic up I asked the stone the wood the bone the steel to take on new purpose

I painted I carved I sewed I dried and filled and inked and dyed. My use gave it meaning. My familiar fingers wear it smooth my touches stoke the magic my offerings give it strength.

The magic is mine it's in me it becomes tangible under my hand it gentles when I ask it presses back against me to guide and teach. my oil sustains it. my care gives it meaning. my confidence regains its shaky footing and there's magic in a lilac twig, carved, short and thin, bone white.

I wonder why people decided they wanted to remove the vowels from a word or sentence before they make a sigil for it?

Does removing the vowels do something that leaving them there, or removing the consonants can’t do?

Who did it first anyway? I know I’ve seen several people and books say you should, but I don’t know what the true source of it is, and I may have to do some research now? Lol

Sigils originated in the Chaos Magic and Ceremonial Magick. The point of sigils was to make a symbol for what you wanted to achieve, charge it, put it in a drawer or box somewhere and forget about it even existing. The forgetting part was actually the most important part of sigil craft. It was part training your mind and part trusting that whatever forces are out there would do the work for her.

This is why taking out the vowels was so imoortant. You’re trying to create a symbol that is no longer recognisable so that when you do find it again, you still can’t remember what it was for. Which is why you take out the vowels and break up the letters.

I gave a class on sigil magic ten years ago when it was still only practiced by Chaos- and Ceremonial practitioners. Our circle found it very complicated, especially the part where you train the mind to forget about what you have made. I must admit, it was really weird seeing that sigils have become such an important part of modern witchcraft!
