Splash (synesthetictaste)
[Your muse has decided to take a relaxing walk along the sea-shore. But then, they hear a little noise in the water. Send a âsplashâ into my askbox, and my muse the mercreature will react to having been found trapped in a tide-pool by your muse.]
Cecil flicked his tail, sending himself to the other side of the small pool and away from this stranger. He was an up-walker, one of the Strange Ones that lived on land rather than the sea; Cecil had seen them from afar, but had always been cautioned against getting close.Â
Now, he was trapped, separated from his home and any hopes of escape. Left without options, the mercreature settled for sinking low into the water, fangs bared as a warning.

âI d o n â t b e l i e v e  y o u.â Cecil rasped.
He growled softly, irritated at how weak and scratchy the sound was; the longer he spent out of deep water, the dryer his throat became. But there was no way he would ever trust an Up Walker to touch him.
Gritting his teeth, he shifted about uncomfortably, trying to submerge himself but still stay on the defensive. Finally, he was forced to lay on his belly, ducking his head beneath the water and getting several deep breaths; despite the position, he remained ready to attack at a momentâs notice, shoulders tense and tail twitching like an irritated cat.
He watched and remained calm at the other moved to get more comfortable. He was amazed at how beautiful his fins glistened in the dim light of the sun. This really was a fascinating creature, as aggressive as he seemed to be.
âHow about I dig a canal of sorts? There is bound to be a shovel somewhere, if not, I can just use my hands, but it will take a while.â He offered instead, thinking it would be a better idea than holding him. Was there a reason other than hatred of his kind? Would the oils of his skin hurt him like they do the slime coat of a normal fish?
Taking a final gulp of water, Cecil reemerged, flicking his hair out of his eyes.
âA.. c a n a l ?â he echoed, voice smoother now that heâd spent time underwater. Regarding the man, he tipped his head to the side, obviously turning the offer over in his mind. âT h a t w o u l d b e ⊠a p p r e c i a t e d.â
âAll right⊠let me find the shovel.â He glanced around and found no lofe guarding stands nearby. Wasnât this still part of the public beach? After several minutes of meaningless search, he laughed as he turned back to the mercreature, âI guess I am using my hands.â Tane smiled as he nodded, âIt might take a while.â
âIâ m n o t g o i n g a n y w h e r e.â Cecil replied.
At this point he guessed that the Up Walker was not an immediate threat, but Cecil didnât let his guard down. Swimming to the far side of the pool, he made himself comfortable, leaning back against the sandy edge while keeping an eye on the other.
Tane was diligent, but slow at his work. He managed to get a pretty deep hole going for him and paused to look at Cecil. âIt would be beneficial for the both of us if I just picked you up and put you back in the ocean.â He didnât stop digging though, knowing that the answer would be the same as the previous responses.
Cecil took the opportunity to doze while the Up Walker worked, eyes narrowing to slits and his form relaxing in the desert heat. However, as time went by he began to pant, feeling fatigued and lightheaded as the pool he was trapped in became heated and stagnant.
Snapping awake at the sudden comment, it took the mercreature a moment to playback what had been said.
â⊠I b e l i e v e y o u a r e r i g h t.â He grunted, swimming nearer to the hole that Tane was working on. âI c a n n o t s t a y i n t h i s p o o l m u c h l o n g e r ⊠â
Tane had to smile. He had somehow gained the trust of the creature before him. âWell, how about I get you out of that pudding and into the open water then?â
He neared the pool again and kneeled. âIâm sure if you hold tight to me that we can get you back to the water soon.â He promised, offering his open arms. âIt will only be a moment.â
Looking him up and down, Cecil leveled the Up Walker with a steady glare, still not entirely trusting that he had good intentions. Still, he drifted closer, reaching up to loop his arms around his neck.
âI f y o u m a k e o n e f a l s e m o v e I w i l l n o t h e s i t a t e to e n d y o u,â He warned, baring his fangs for emphasis.
Feisty, but Tane smiled and lifted the mercreature carefully. âI will try my best not to harm you.â He promised and adjusted his hold on the other, making sure he had a good support. Dropping him was probably not the best idea.
âSo, just any where as long as you are in the ocean again?â He planned on wading out a bit so it would be easier for the other to get away once he was released. âOr just the closest?â
