New Games Being Release Require Firmware 3.56

Two new games have popped up that require Sony's security laden 3.56 firmware. The first game, Dragon Age II, isn't due to hit retail shelves until March 8th, but hackers have managed to get their hands on an early leaked copy. After some experimentation, some people have reported success in getting the game to run on 3.55 with a simple modification to the version string in the PARAM.SFO along with a repackaged EBOOT.BIN.

  This could be the greatest emulator yet for the PS3 but PS3SX emulator, which is a port from PCSX, reportedly to having some issues for running PS1 backup games. Nothing has been heard from the developer of this project after he released his PS3SX source code last month.

Another project announced on December last year, to take the role CCS64. CCS64 is a Commodore 64 Emulator for PC developed in 1995. The C64 itself has been quite popular in the 80′s.

Yes, you read it right. A Dolphin emulator for the PS3, as we all already know the emulator is capable of emulating Gamecube and Wii games on the PC. Soon, i hope, we can fully taste it on our favorite console.

Finally! I can retire my Amiga 500. The Ubiquitous Amiga Emulator (UAE) has made its way onto PS3 with thanks to Ole, who is responsible for this particular port of E-UAE. I grew up on Amiga and till this day it remains one of my favourite systems to emulate — from decapitating heads in Barbarian, driving crazy tracks in Stunt Car Racer to hoping for a better hand in Artworx’s Strip Poker II… My mom probably wondered what that unlabelled floppy disk was in my sock drawer.

Open-World Zombie Survival Game 'Class3' Coming To Xbox Live Arcade

If you've been feeling some burnout from the zombie overload in pop culture of late, then you run the risk of missing out on some cool stuff. "The Walking Dead" TV series was great stuff and the just-released zombie map for "Call of Duty: Black Ops" features Space Monkeys, which is absolutely fine. Now there's news of an upcoming Xbox Live Arcade title from Undead Labs that the developer hopes will put a whole new spin on zombie video gaming. The game, which is currently going by the codename "Class3," sounds an awful lot like an interactive take on "The Walking Dead." Undead Labs is building an open-world game that, as they describe in a new blog post, will "empower you to try out your real-world zombie survival plan." It's early in the development and a lot of the ideas being thrown around are of the big picture variety, but there's no denying the appeal in what Undead Labs is cooking up.

Their intention for the open-world game is to put just as much emphasis on the challenges of surviving in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested world as they will on actually bringing down the shambling hordes in open combat. Food, water, shelter and ammo are listed as necessary resources to seek out and maintain. Shelters will need to be built, but since location is also important you'll need to explore the open environment, either on foot or in a vehicle. You can even bring a friend along, as Undead Labs plans for two-player cooperative play.

The long-term goal for this project is meant to culminate in "Class4," a massively multiplayer outing that brings the basic mechanical precepts established in "Class3" into a much larger space and for considerably higher numbers of players. That's going to happen much further down the line, after "Class3" -- a full-blown game that will also serve as a testing ground -- has been put through its paces. For now, Undead Labs is partnered with Microsoft on the Xbox Live Arcade release and in concept at least it sounds freaking awesome.

Sony's latest PS3 firmware gaffe: no hard drive upgrades

  Sony is simply not having a good time lately. The company is fighting hackers by obtaining restraining orders, it's trying to get tools to hack the PlayStation 3 taken offline, and the latest PS3 firmware has quite a glitch: it makes hard drive upgrades impossible on many PS3 models.

The problem seems due to the rushed nature of Sony's latest security update. A post on NeoGafexplains the situation:

The 3.56 patch is a tiny patch which simply add/changes files in the 3.55 software. This differs from most patches which download the entire firmware. Since part of the software on models with 16MB of flash memory is stored on the hard drive, those PS3's need to reinstall the software when upgrading the drive. PS3's with 256MB of flash memory store all the software in the flash memory so it isn't lost on a drive upgrade.

Anyway since 3.56 is a hot patch and requires 3.55 to be installed prior to updating, you can't install 3.56 on a new drive. You also could install 3.55 when upgrading if not for Sony's software version checks.

This issue popped up in a previous firmware update and was fixed, which means we can expect more patches in the near future. One poor gamer ran into this glitch the hard way when he tried to format his hardware and start with a fresh PlayStation 3... only to find his system more or less broken without a way to install a working hard drive.

If you're not planning to upgrade your hard drive, this isn't much of a problem, and it should be fixed soon. If you were planning to upgrade, just sit tight until Sony fixes the issue. The worst thing you could do at this point is reformat your hard drive, as there is no way to successfully restore it if you're running the latest firmware.

PS3 "Other OS" Removal May Violate Norwegian Law.

The Norwegian Consumer Council says Sony's removal of the "Other OS" option in the PlayStation 3 is a clear violation of the country's Marketing Control Act and plans to file an official complaint with the Consumer Ombudsman. A lot of PS3 owners got a bit of a nasty surprise back in March 2010 when Sony decided to remove the console's "Other OS" option. Sony claimed that the removal of the option, which let users install alternate operating systems like Linux, was a necessary security measure, but that didn't fly with a lot of owners, some of whom very predictably launched lawsuits. But the Norwegian Consumer Council is taking matters a step further. "Sony claims a universal right to change or remove functionality from the gaming console," said Thomas Nortvedt of the Norwegian Consumer Council. "In our opinion this is in clear violation of the Marketing Control Act, and not the least it's a breach of trust between the consumer and Sony."

The council received several complaints about the Other OS removal but Nortvedt said digital services aren't covered by Norway's current consumer laws. As a result, users are at the mercy of license agreements that deprive them of meaningful protection, demonstrating "just how little protection the consumer has in the digital age."

"There needs to be a limit to what constitutes a reasonable change to products we buy. Terms of service that grant the manufacturer full access to literally downgrade the product or limit the functionality are unreasonable and in clear violation of the Marketing Control Act," Nortvedt said. "When a company uses terms like updates or upgrades, it is reasonable to expect a significant improvement of the product and not the risk of being stuck with a lesser product."

This is a case that bears watching. The Norwegian market on its own may not have enough heft to make Sony tremble but it could set a rather unwelcome precedent and inspire other nations to follow in its footsteps. If nothing else, a successful complaint could trigger similar actions from aggrieved consumer groups around the world, causing a legal and PR headache that Sony would probably much rather avoid.

Yet while Norway spearheads this particular battle over digital consumer rights, it remains mired in irrelevance when it comes to lions and tigers. Norway? More like Snoreway.

JaicraB's Patched LV2Diag.self, Skip Blu-ray Drive for PS3 Updates

Today Spanish PlayStation 3 developer JaicraB has released a patched LV2Diag.self file which allows users to skip the Blu-ray drive 'BD FIRMWARE' and 'Blu-ray Disc Player Revoke List' steps while doing PS3 Firmware updates. "BD FIRMWARE" and "Blu-ray Disc Player Revoke list." Whose patches are: 0x3CF0 offset = 0x419E0044 offset = 0x48000034 0x3C50 This allows you to skip the two functions related to the BD-Drive. Avoid the error and let the system continue to update. Still not solved the problem without running Hombrews reader. I hope a solution comes soon. Activate Service Mode.

Copy the root of the USB Lv2diag.self entered.

Copy the root file update PS3UPDAT.PUP desired.

Turn on the PS3 with the USB port inserted in 0 (the closest to the reader.)

Wait until it turns off.

Copy the STEP2 Lv2diag.self (not provided for me).

Insert the USB port 0.

Turn and go off within seconds.

CLARIFICATIONS Needless to say, but just in case. It is your responsibility. Compatibility is the same as the original Lv2diag.self. Lv2diag is a dangerous tool, to inform it. LogJam Intelligent Log Stealthing Released

I just get this thing about ready to release, and Sony pulls this crap with the Firmware update. (bazgee)

Ah well. They still collect your logs, even if you don’t sign in, so here is my contribution: LogJam “Proof of Concept”. It cleans up your logs, not by erasing them (easy thing to spot!!), and not by copying the same data to them (again, VERY easy to spot), but by clearing out invalid entries, homebrew, games that don’t belong in your region, etc… and replaces them, if needed, with valid games, randomly.

The code is there, written in C, not compilable as is (built with PSL1GHT), but authors of Backup Managers are welcome to incorporate the “LogJam” Stealthing routines.

Temporary Restraining Order Issued in Sony vs. Geohot

The judge has granted Sony's request for a TRO (Temporary Restraining Order) in the case against Geohot (George Hotz) and the other named defendants. The program is self explaining, each button, each textbox etc. has a tooltip in my opinion, it is n00b save But read below for a short introduction...

Working with it is totally easy:

1. Click on "Options" and search for the dir(s) containing your games (click on the Button in the middle. After that, click on "OK", the window will be closed and brings you back to the Update form.

2. Click on "Search files", the program searches all directorys you´ve configured and extracts the game id(´s) and the path to the game

3. Double click on the right side on a game id, it put´s this id into the text box "Game ID" and searches for updates.

3.1 If is no update found, select an other update type.

4. click on a checkbox of the update you want to download and select the path to save.

5. If you want an update for a game you don´t have on your hdd or you don´t know the ID from, click on "Gamesearch", enter the game name, select game region and click on "Find Game". If the game is found, doubleclick on

Game ID and the ID will be automatically entered in the update form and searches for an udpate.

5.1 If is no update found, select an other update type.

6. If you want to add some games to the database, click on "Database" and then "Search for games". Then, the program searches all dir(s) you´ve configured in the options and add them to the listview. After that, click

on "Save to Database" and all infos you can see are in the database. If you have games in the database, just click on "load database".

Sony Starts Rolling Out New PS3 Security Updates

In the wake of hackers exploiting security vulnerabilities in the PlayStation 3, opening the system to custom firmware, hacks and piracy, Sony appears to be issuing a response with new security updates.

The official PlayStation.blog warns that a new system update for the PS3 (version 3.56) will be released soon. Eric Lempel, VP or Network Operations for Sony Computer Entertainment America, is brief in describing what it does, writing "This is a minor update that adds a security patch."

The previous version of the PS3's firmware (version 3.55) updated with precisely the same description.

Perhaps more interesting than PS3 software updates is an unconfirmed report that Sony has another solution in the works to combat PlayStation 3 piracy and exploits: serial keys. According to a report on Techeye, citing Dutch PlayStation outlet PS3-Scene, who in turn cites an unnamed source, Sony may be playing to ship unique serial keys with each game it ships going forward.

That move, if true, would be an unusual solution. Serial keys certainly haven't saved the PC platform from piracy and customers may balk at another obstacle keeping them from playing their legitimately purchased games.

We've inquired with the folks at PlayStation to see if there's any truth to reports that serial keys will come to the PS3 and will update if they respond.
