Let me be that guy. I grew up in the desert, and currently live in the humid swamps of despair. I'm fine with heat. I'm tolerant of Satan's taint humidity.

However, I am physically incapable of escaping the cold. I could sit my ass directly into a fire and my fingers would still be half a degree away from frost bite. No amount of layers, heaters, hot chocolates, or any other "YoU cAn AlWaYs AdD MoRe StUfF" will ever get me to a temp level where I don't feel like I'm actively dying.

-Sincerely- a mechanic with circulatory issues and a slew of other medical conditions that always mean I am too damn cold.

The bar for “strong female characters” is so low: put a gun in her hand an a snappy comeback on her lips and tada! Instant icon, instant role model, now everyone can move on to the male hero. And they’re always “spunky.” Spunky pioneers in the wild west, spunky dystopian daredevils, spunky, sassy gals kicking ass and taking names.

I always wondered why they wouldn’t just chill the fuck out. Don’t get me wrong, female characters can act however they want. There are characters who could be characterized as “spunky” (although please give them more credit than that) — Katara, Ginny, Hermione for example — whom I absolutely adore. But where are the quiet girls?

Mai never puts on a show to be more outgoing or “interesting” than she wants to be. She doesn’t emote her every thought. Her refusal to do things like slide down the chute in “The Drill” or get dirty going after Appa in “The Chase” are honestly so refreshing after the onslaught of can-do action heroines in so many books, movies and TV shows. 

When she’s passionate, she’s passionate and when she’s not she doesn’t pretend. And she is passionate. She’s an excellent (self-taught!) fighter and we all know how much she loves Zuko. The fact that the fandom’s babe, Sifu Hotman himself, ends up with a character so many disregard as boring makes me endlessly happy. Her personality and her strengths are shown to be so valuable when we see her and Zuko interact. After all, she is taking on the Iroh-level challenge of Dealing With Zuzu’s Bullshit. But this isn’t about Zuko.

This is about Mai and how important she is for girls who have ever been called quiet, boring or emotionless.

Thank you! I see myself in Mai, how I was at her age and how I am now, even as an adult. I'm introverted and quiet, and people say I tend to come off as bitchy.

But I'm not. I care about things so much, I just bottle it up until it forces itself out. People have criticized Mai for being a plot device for Azula's mental break, but as a person who understands the person Mai is, The person I AM, I felt Mai's confession from my soul.

Just because YOU can't relate to her, doesn't mean she's a one dimensional character.
