Reposting this for probably the 3rd time in a year. A room at The Madonna Inn in California. I adore this room so much.
The Sugarcubes - Birthday
‘Threads worms on a string, keeps spiders in her pocket…’ Things got weirder in 1988 when from Iceland came The Sugarcubes blessed with one Bjork Gudmundsdottir. The album was great; scatty, exuberant, but it was Birthday that marked them out as special. It has an unsettling fairy-tale quality, with its images of earthy innocence, deadpan sexuality. There’s something preternatural about it, about her. At least that’s how it seemed then, like she was something out of a Nordic folk tale. She’s all appetites, tactile fingers, thoughtless cruelty, doesn’t know what a child is supposed to do, grappling in the earth is the same to her as scratching his beard. He’s troubling though, to say the least. Even if he does sow a bird in her knickers.
