Littles in public

I saw a post that brought up a lot of strong feelings about littles being present and visible in public, either through overt behavior or by having comfort objects out that made them recognizably little.

That post made me think of one of my favorite sections from the book Coping with Trauma-Related Dissociation, which has a whole chapter on working with “inner children” or “young parts” as it calls them.

I should explain, this book is written for people who have just been diagnosed with DID/OSDD and so the language is very cautious in some ways. It uses the phrase “parts of yourself” rather than saying “alters”. I think the intent here is to be less alarming to people who are newly diagnosed. I know this rubs some people the wrong way though. Not everyone likes to think of their alters as parts of themselves, but that’s the language this book uses. Otherwise, it is an amazing and helpful book. Here’s my favorite bit:

Reading this was profound for me. It brought to light multiple problems that I was not aware we were having!

1. Sometimes I was making the wrong choices in how I comfort our little ones. Rather than firmly saying, “The grocery store is safe and nothing bad will happen here,” I was allowing them to be lost in past fears and anxieties.

2. I was unaware that sometimes indulging the little ones was causing larger conflicts in the system. One of the biggest problems in our system (and in many systems) is that there are some parts who feel hostile towards the younger parts for being scared and vulnerable. Doing things like allowing the little ones to be overtly little in public or to do things that caused embarrassment for those older parts just caused that hostility to grow.

Recognizing these problems helped us change things. I was able to redirect those hostile parts from being angry at our little ones to aligning with them to protect them. “Can you help me keep them feeling safe so they don’t feel the need to do that thing that you feel embarrassed about?” was what turned things around.

And in case you think this book is just about taking away your littles’ stuffies or depriving them of what they need, it’s not. It actually encourages so much caretaking and love. It just encourages doing it in appropriate settings and with specific healing goals in mind.

This is Henry, who we bought specifically because this book helped us recognize the need for him.
