“Because they didn’t need to reveal themselves fully until Alien needed them. Needed the company and to be grounded because he lacked memories.” Ghost continues.

Jet nods, that makes sense, he guesses. “So..what does Lola suggest we do? How the hell do we infiltrate BLi?” He asked slowly, “And everyone gets out this time.” he glances meaningfully to Ghost. He didn’t want to go through any of them playing hero again.

Lola feels a bit overwhelmed. They barely managed to get out one person, let alone several. Lola doesn’t know how they’ll manage, but they’ll try to plan and make sure their in and out goes as smoothly as possible. And Lola will act as a watch guard while they find Alien and save him and warn them if anybody is coming. Lola doesn’t know what to do, but Lola knows they have to save Alien.

“Right…” Ghoul says quietly. Even if it’s all real, he still feels strange putting his faith into a being he can’t even directly interact with. “Yeah. We need a plan. Desperately.”

“They don’t- They don’t have a plan quite yet, but they’re going to try and make one that’ll go smoothly as possible. They’ll get us in, keep watch and warn us if anyone is coming, and help us get out with Alien. But as for the specific details, they don’t know yet.” Ghost looks to Lola, sensing that they’re feeling overwhelmed. He wants to help somehow but doesn’t know how.

Jet glances at Ghoul, “As good as we’re gonna get.” he said with a shrug, and winced, “We’re tryin’ to come up with a game plan but it’s not going too well. Just wish there was an easier way to do this. I don’t suppose you have ideas of how to proceed? I mean, obviously we all need to heal up after all this. No sense in walking in there injured.” Jet stole another pointed glance at Ghoul during his last sentence.

Lola comes and sits on the floor beside everyone, comfortable just to listen in. They might be able to help with plans as they also know or can easily find out ways inside and out of BLi. They also know how to find Alien. But until, they’re needed, Lola is instead focused on paying attention to Ghost and hoping that he’ll be alright, as well as everyone else.

Ghoul sticks his tongue out at Jet at the shade and represses a laugh. He stays quiet, hoping maybe Ghost has any better ideas than the absolutely fucking nothing he and Jet have managed to come up with. He tries to disregard the talk of Kobra.

Ghost glances over at Lola for a moment before speaking again. “I don’t have anything, but Lola might-” He looks back at the others. “They’ve gotten him out before, I believe they can definitely help getting him out again.”

Jet sighed, “I guess Lola knows better than the rest of us. I don’t really understand how but they haven’t steered us wrong yet, right?” he said, “Not the first thing I’ve believed in that I can’t see, I guess.” He rubbed his shoulder gently. He feels a pang of anxiety just thinking about going back into BLi and tries to push it away.

Lola nods energetically at being able to get the others in. They begin to express that they know the ins and outs of Battery City, able to easily find blind spots since they have the ability to be unseen by the masses. There are secret abandoned entrances once used to deliver supplies. Combined with careful planning based off of Drac routes and patrols, Lola can guide them in, to Alien’s location, and out.

They sense Jet’s pang of fear, and try to send comfort his way.

Ghoul looks between Ghost and Jet for a minute before quietly asking, “So what’s up with Lola exactly anyway? Like, in all seriousness. All drama aside. Run me down.” He messes up his hair a little bit just to do something with his hands.

“Well, uh- first off, they say they know the ins and outs of the City and can easily find blind spots within the City for us. There’s other secret entrances we can use, since the tunnels are kind of- yeah.” He stumbles slightly through his translation of what Lola was telling him. “As long as we plan carefully, Lola can guide us in, get Alien, and get out. And regarding what you asked, Ghoul-” He looked towards Lola, hoping for some help with explaining them again.

Jet raised his eyebrows, “Don’t look at me, Lola is all Alien and Ghost.” He said, “You described them as a pink, fuzzy creature when I met them, right? Well…met. Lola seems to know how to calm down both Alien and Ghost, which is honestly super helpful.” He shrugs. He feels a strange wave of comfort and half smiles. He lets himself relax a little and settles into the couch.

Lola isn’t sure how to explain. They’re something similar to the Phoenix Witch, but not nearly as important or powerful. And they and Alien have a bond, that even Lola can’t describe. Even when he was a child in the city, he somehow subconsciously knew of Lola’s existence and could sense them, though he thought it was just his imagination as Lola stayed hidden then. Lola guides him and helped him as he turned into Party and helped him and the people around him. When he was caught, Lola had to reveal themselves to help Alien escape. When he was caught again, Lola revealed themselves to Ghost, trusting him to help Alien.

“Pink and fuzzy…” Ghoul mutters, but he tries not to let it cloud his judgement. “So they can help. Theoretically. That’s great. But what—?” He lets his silence do the talking here.

“They’re- they’re like the Witch in a way, but not as important or as powerful.” Ghost continues to explain, watching Lola to make sure he’s explaining correctly. “And yeah, they can help . They’ve helped us before too, especially Alien. Lola’s been around him practically all his life- and were the one who helped him out of there the first time.” He looks back over at the others. “They- they revealed themselves to me after- what happened- trusting that I, along with you guys, can help him again.”

“Okay- Okay, good.” Ghost instinctively wiped the remaining tears from Kobra’s face, not even thinking about it in the moment. “Thank you-” Pigeon curls up in Kobra’s lap now, drifting to sleep. “Good to see Pigeon’s warmed up to you, huh-” He tried to smile and lighten the mood but it was clearly fake, feeling very forced and empty.

Jet watched Ghoul, “Take a breath, dude, it’s okay.” Jet said softly. He sat up with a bit of a groan and pulls Ghoul into a hug, “You can’t trust him, right? Me neither. Ghost seems to trust him still, after that happened earlier, and I don’t get it. We were talking and he seemed okay, before we got back here. I just…can’t.”

Kobra blinks, stunned at the kindness of Ghost’s act of wiping his tears. He feels on edge, but he shoves it away. He softens at realizing Pigeon is in his lap. He begins to pet them, trying to relax this tortured feeling in his chest. “Yeah,” He says softly, “Wasn’t sure whether that would happen,” He schools his face into a blank and emotionless mask, trying to portray contentment from Pigeon’s company.

Lola feels like something is very wrong with the both of them, both of them having gone blank. They just want them to be okay. They ask Ghost if he’s alright, knowing that he isn’t.

“So what do we do?” Ghoul asks, leaning into Jet but not hugging back. “If we need him but can’t trust him, what options do we have?” He’s clearly trying to keep his voice from shaking.

Ghost glances behind him at Lola. “I’m- fine, Lola-” He fakes a smile again. “Don’t worry, I’m fine.” He looks back at Kobra and the now asleep Pigeon. “Well- I’m glad it did then. They’re- they’ve been helpful recently, I can’t explain it-”

Jet rubs Ghoul’s back, “I know I’m known to be the man with a plan but…I got nothing. I guess we just have to be cautious. We gotta get ourselves out: you me, Ghost and Alien, if possible. If Kobra turns…we have to protect ourselves. He isn’t fully Kobra anymore, the one we knew & grew up with. I pray to the Witch that it’ll never come to that, but who knows what BLi has up their sleeves.” Jet said. He leaned back and rubbed his eyes, suddenly feeling the weight of the world back on his shoulders.

“They have been,” He says feeling calmer and calmer the longer he pets the sleeping kitten in his lap, “Seems like everyone loves Pigeon,” Lola still weirds Kobra out and he’s still certain it’s from some kind of brain fuckery on BLi’s part, but he doesn’t say anything about them. He falls into silence.

Lola knows he’s not fine, but Lola doesn’t know what to do to help. They feel powerless, something that they haven’t felt in awhile.

“I don’t think cautious is gonna cut it,” Ghoul mutters. He looks exhausted. “I just wish we could ditch him and move on. It’s not safe. I’m not safe. We’re not safe.” He pauses. “Ghost isn’t safe.”

“Yeah-” Ghost sighs. “Yeah- you can- you can keep them out here if you want. I should- probably go back inside soon. Before one of them comes out here worrying about me-” He gestures to the door. “You okay out here still? Need anything?”

Jet paused, “You don’t think I know that?” He asked sharply, with a bit of a laugh, “S-sorry. It’s just. He’s my first priority. I’m always thinking of his safety and what’s best for him. I’m terrified that I’m about to bring him back into BLi, back into the danger I spent decades escaping.” He said softer, and glanced at the door, “I’d do anything for you & Alien…but Ghost is always my first priority. Nothing comes before him.” His voice was serious, but his eyes betrayed a sadness.

“You should, and- No,” Kobra says a quietly, “I’m fine-,” He strokes Pigeon, “Shoukd you bring them back inside?” He’s hesitant, not wanting to lose this small shred of comfort. But if it means what’s best for Pigeon, he’ll let Ghost take them back inside.

Lola stretches. It feels almost like a nervous habit, though Lola doesn’t do it very often.

Ghoul nods. “I don’t blame you. I’d do the same for my kid if I had one.” He looks at Jet sadly. “Maybe we should keep him out of this. Go into Bat City by ourselves and have him stay here with D. It sounds shitty, but— but i want him save if I can afford it, and I don’t think he should be around anything related to BLi if we can help it. But. Maybe it’s a bad idea to do that. I don’t know.”

“Pigeon can stay out here with you, they look comfy in your lap anyways.” Ghost gives Pigeon a little head scratch before carefully pushing himself to his feet, his one leg hurting a bit. “Just let me know if you need anything.” He turns back to the door, pausing for a moment. “We have to keep this between us. Don’t forget that-” He adds in, glancing back at Kobra before limping over to the door, opening it and entering.

Jet looked over as the door opened, smiling a little at Ghost’s form entering the building again. He looked back at Ghoul and quickly said, “Last time I had him stay, it went seriously Costa Rica, not doing that again.” his voice was quiet, and then he spoke normally towards Ghost, “Hey kid, come sit down. You shouldn’t be walking yet.” Jet patted the seat next to him on the couch. “I-is Kobra doing okay?”

Lola gets up and follows Ghost inside. They’re happy to see that Ghoul and Jet are alright for the most part. None of this is easy for anyone to deal with.

He decides now is a good time to take a breather, and he figures he’ll ask what went so Costa Rica later.

“Okay- Okay, good.” Ghost instinctively wiped the remaining tears from Kobra’s face, not even thinking about it in the moment. “Thank you-” Pigeon curls up in Kobra’s lap now, drifting to sleep. “Good to see Pigeon’s warmed up to you, huh-” He tried to smile and lighten the mood but it was clearly fake, feeling very forced and empty.

Ghost sits there in silence, stunned by what Kobra just told him. He blinked a few times, feeling a few tears sting his own eyes, as he replayed what he was told in his head. “Kobra-” He stops, not knowing what to say. He wanted to cry, wanted to scream, wanted to do something, but he couldn’t. He just stayed where he was, feeling as if he was going numb.

“Don’t be stupid, Ghoul. We wouldn’t have wanted it to be you either. He wouldn’t want that.” He said, a few tears rolling down his cheeks. “We’ll get him back and he’ll call you an idiot and we’ll be back to normal.” He let out a quiet sob. “I’m sorry, man. I’m so sorry.”

Tears begin to fall from Kobra’s eyes. “You should hate me. I wouldn’t blame you.” How could he, when he hated himself? He gently pets Pigeon, a sob trying to tear its way out of him. “Alien-,” he starts, “My brother-, he wouldn’t have gotten shot if it weren’t for me,” He squeezes his eyes shut, “If I didn’t bring him in, none of this would’ve happened. You should blame me for it. Why aren’t you? You should be hitting me, or worse-,”

Lola immediately tries to send strength to Ghost, so he can get through this, and comfort to Kobra. They can get through this, Lola knows they can.

Ghoul laughs through a sob at the idiot comment and glances at Jet through his tears. He tries to speak, but he can’t force any words out, so he just sits there and tries to get the tears under control, to little avail.

Ghost looks over to Lola, feeling what they’re trying to send to him, but it’s doing nothing. The only thing he feels now is just sick to his stomach. Why wasn’t he yelling? Why wasn’t he fighting back? He looks back over to Kobra, trying to find the right reaction he needed to show. But nothing was coming to him. So instead, against what would probably be the better choice, he carefully moves closer to Kobra. “Kobra-” Ghost repeats, now sitting right in front of him. What the hell was he even doing? “We can’t let the others know. Not now. Not ever would be preferable.” His voice was unsteady as he tried to speak. “Listen to me- okay. Promise to keep this between us only.” Why the hell was he trying to help Kobra? “Listen- I know it wasn’t you- not the Kobra I know- I don’t blame you, just BLi-”

Jet leans over and grabs a half full water bottle and takes a swig before he hands it to Ghoul. “If anyone can pull Alien out of this, it’s you and Kobra.” Jet said gently, “I went through life being angry, being livid at BLi but now I think I’m scared of them. Never wanted to feel like that.”

“What?” Kobra says, feeling incredulous, like he’s a crazy person for thinking this way, but he feels it anyway, “We can’t just not tell them,” He still feels tears in his eyes and he feels like he might get into trouble, but he’s knows he deserves it, “I- I did something- so- so wrong- and you want me to hide it?” He wipes at his eyes, “I can’t even- I can’t be forgiven for something like this- I don’t deserve to be,” He puts his head in his hands feeling like a horrible person. “You can’t think that- you can’t not think that this is something that we can just ignore. I tried- I tried so hard to, but- it’s all my fault,”

Ghoul takes a swig and then wipes his mouth with the back of his hand. He gives himself a minute to breathe before responding. “I’m the opposite,” he says, voice rough from crying. “I was afraid when I first got away, but now I’m just—” He pauses. “I’m just pissed. I thought I was angry before all this went down, but Witch was I wrong. I’ve never been this pissed off before.” He chokes down a sob and runs his fingers through his hair. “I can’t work with him, Jet,” he says eventually. “I can’t work with Kobra. I— I just—”

Pigeon meows at Kobra, now in his lap, pawing at his arm. “There’s no way we’re gonna be able to get Alien back without you- without your help- and if the two in there knew this-” Ghost gently grabs Kobra’s wrists, pulling his hands away from his face “There’d be no way in hell we’d be able to get him back. If you- if you want them to know- then at least keep it between us until we get Alien back and safe. Until we’re all together again-”

Pigeon jumps back slightly when Kobra holds out his hand, but moves closer again and sniffs at it. Soon enough they headbutt his hand, starting to purr and rub against it. Ghost smiles when Pigeon actually starts to purr around Kobra, seeing it as a small victory of sorts. “Don’t be so harsh on yourself, dude.”

Jet didn’t answer right away, “Don’t be sorry, man. You thought we were dead.” he said eventually, he gently places a hand on Ghoul’s leg, “You’re here now, anyway. We really need all hands on deck if we’re going to get Alien back and then help Kobra and Ghost. We’ll be back to being a big dysfunctional family again soon, okay?”

Kobra smiles slightly when the kitten begins to purr. Gently he begins to pet the kitten, being extremely careful. His smile falters, “You shouldn’t be so easy on me. I don’t-,” He sighs, “I don’t deserve it,” He rubs the kitten, “I’m really- really- sorry. For everything, I- I was awful. I’m so sorry,” He drops his hand.

Lola wants to comfort Kobra, trying to send comfort to him. He was put through a lot.

He nods slowly, not looking at Jet. “You got P— Alien out once, you said. What happened? Why— why isn’t—” He doesn’t finish the question. He doesn’t feel like he needs to, and suddenly the words aren’t coming. He stares at Jet’s hand on his leg and goes silent. He feels like his throat is closing up.

Pigeon meows when Kobra stopped petting them, moving closer and rubbing against him again. “You don’t have to apologize for what they made you do, Kobra.” Ghost sighs, watching Pigeon. “You’re family, and I want to try and help you any way I can. That’s why I’m out here in the first place. I know you’ve done some- bad shit- but I’m not gonna act like how the others are to you.”

Jet swallowed the lump in his throat, “We were on our way out, like almost there, when BLi cornered us and started a firefight. Next thing I know, Alien was on the ground in blood.” He started softly, his voice broke and waivered as he finished, “We realized he wouldn’t make it out of the City alive, we were all injured and weak. They have better technology there, they could save him. We…we had to, Ghoul. There was no choice. We promised him we’d be back. And we will be.” He sniffled, paused for a moment and in a whisper said “I’m sorry, Ghoul.”

Kobra pinches his nose, “No- You don’t-,” He feels tears welling up in his eyes, “You don’t get it. You don’t know the whole story,” He didn’t want to say, didn’t want to admit how horrible he really was, but he can’t hide it from him. “You really- really shouldn’t be around me. You can’t trust me. Not since BLi. We may be family, but I’m going to get you killed,” He pets Pigeon, afraid he might not get another chance, “Jet and Ghoul are right to treat me like they do,”

Lola knows what he’s getting at and they stiffen. They know it’s not Kobra’s fault he did this, but he also did very, very bad things. Lola just wants them all to be happy and safe again.

Ghoul stiffens and stares at Jet, eyes wide. He thinks he wants to cry, but the tears won’t come. “You— you left him there,” he says, voice barely working. “You had him and you left him there and—” He lets out a noise that could either be a sob or a laugh at smiles in disbelief. “You had him—” He feels like a broken record. He can’t think of anything else to say. All of this was just so fucking insane and he had no idea how to react or what to do about it.

“What is it, Lola?” Ghost asks, noticing their change in demeanor. Pigeon paws at Kobra’s leg, wanting up in his lap. Ghost looks back over to Kobra, noticing his change in expression as well. “Kobra- what do you mean by that? That I don’t know the whole story-” He was a bit worried about what he meant, starting to second guess coming out here in the first place, but he’d feel bad if he didn’t at least try to talk to Kobra.

Jet feels his heart break, “Ghoul, I…I’m sorry. We couldn’t have gotten him out alive, he would’ve bled out in the desert.” He said, a small sob slipping out, “We didn’t want to leave him there.” Jet put his broken arm on Ghoul’s shoulders and pulled him closer. “I’m sorry.” He mumbled.

“Look, kid, you can’t trust me,” He wants to pick up Pigeon and place the kitten in his lap and pet the creature for comfort, but he doesn’t feel like he deserves it. He gently picks up the kitten cradling them instead. He leaves his grip loose enough that the kitten could hop out anytime they wanted. He pets Pigeon, and he finds their presence comforting in his hands. “It’s my fault-,” he says at first quietly before gaining volume, “It’s my fault- that any of this happened,” He stares out blankly at the ground, thinking back to the beginning of all of this. He feels a bit of support from something that he can’t explain.

Lola tries to send Kobra love and peace, so he can do this. It’s something they know needs to happen, but it doesn’t make it any easier. They also try and buffer any bad emotions Ghost might feel soon.

Ghoul chokes back a sob and leans into Jet, shaking slightly. “I thought I already had this breakdown six months ago,” he mutters. “Thought I was done being upset over Party but here we fuckin’ are—” He’s fighting back tears now. He can’t tell if he’s heartbroken or just pissed that he couldn’t help, but whatever it is, it hurts.

Pigeon purrs loudly in Kobra’s arms, kneading his arm happily. “No it isn’t? How- how is this your fault?” Ghost asked, furrowing his brow.
