Hey Everyone, this is the next part to Squishy!

The air was crisp as they stepped from the car. The tendrils of winter had began to disperse and cool all that it touched. No leaves remained green, all brown and curled, waiting on the wind to make them dance enough to fall. Amelia peered up at the sky as they made their way to the house, eyes reflecting it back. 

She didn’t notice she’d stopped walking, until she felt Link come up behind her, felt his arms wind around her, and shield her, steady her. He looked up too, trying to see what she was seeing. The sky was extra deep today, Amelia thought. She felt as if she could look past the clouds and past the blue, passed the faint stars. She felt very small there, under the sky, enclosed in strong warm arms. “Okay?” Link whispered. She only nodded, meaning it. She felt momentarily light, and  completely unburdened by worries. “Come on now, in we go before we freeze” he said, holding her tighter, driving her forward.

“Mmmnn couch…” Amelia said, peeling off her jacket, and heading straight for the couch as soon as they entered Meredith’s. Link took off his coat and shoes before following her. He leaned down and took off her shoes, dropping them beside her. 

“Amelia? That you?” Meredith called out from the kitchen, poking her head around and then walking to them. “You’re home early?”

Amelia was lounged back on the couch, “Yeah… I was sick in the ER.”

“She passed out” Link butt in, eyebrows raised.

 Meredith gasped, “What?”

Sick Day Ch. 3

I swear I have not forgotten about this story, life has just been a bit all over the place and also I am trying to figure out what I am doing with this story. Hopefully, y'all like this chapter and I swear the next update won’t take so long. (:

Amelia didn’t know if she wanted to be having a conversation with Owen after a long day at work, but she figured it was now or never. “What’s up?”

Owen didn’t know how to bring up the topic of her dating life, did he even have a right to ask? They had gone their separate ways, and the only thing they have spoken about since that day with the lawyer when drawing up Leo’s adoption papers was, well, Leo. So, he thought that the best way to approach this conversation was to just get it over with, “What’s up with you and Link?”

“Excuse me?”

“Is it serious, are you two together?”

“Owen, that is none of your business, who I decide to be involved with is not your concern.”

“I know, your right, but I just wanted to know because if you two are going to be seeing each other he is going to be around Leo.”

“Wait, wow, you are getting way ahead of yourself. Link and I are just getting to know each other, it’s not like we are going to run off and get married next week.” Amelia knew that Owen had a right to know who was going to be around his kid, but she also knew that Owen was just using that as an excuse to see if he can get more information out of her. However, there wasn’t any more information to give, she was still getting to know Link plus she thought that even if there was more to say Owen had no right to have an opinion. “Owen, you are no longer involved in my life choices because you are no longer a part of them, I have to move on with my life and find myself. I will be there when you need me to take care of Leo, but my love life is off-limits.”

“Okay,” Owen responded, he didn’t really know what else to say, he knew that she was right, that they were now on different paths. “I didn’t mean to overstep”

“Goodnight Owen, I’ll see you around.”

Time Jump (4 months later)

Amelia was just finished with surgery and was updating her patients’ chart when she sensed him next to her. There was no need to look over, she knew his presence. She couldn’t help but smile and look up at him, he was smiling at her and she couldn’t help the butterflies that she felt.

“How is work going?” Link asked; Amelia liked how he would ask her about her day and would listen to her.

“It’s been good, nothing too crazy, what about you?”

“I’ve had a pretty slow day, I actually got a call from my old boss with the Mariners, he asked if I could check on a player they were thinking of adding to the roster but was having issues with his right knee, and in exchange he would get me some free tickets to their next home game.”

“That’s cool, when do you have to go check on the player?”

“Tomorrow afternoon. The next home game is on Saturday and I was wondering if…if maybe you would like to go with me?” Link and Amelia have had many great dates, but Amelia wasn’t really into sports, but if it meant getting to spend some time with Link outside of work, she wouldn’t mind going to a baseball game.

“Sure, I mean I don’t really follow sports, but I would love to go.”

“Great, the game starts at three, so I’ll pick you at about one-thirty. There is a lot of traffic when there are games.”

Amelia was really looking forward to this date, it was something new and she knew that Link loved baseball so she couldn’t wait to see him in that environment. Amelia was getting to know Link a lot better and the more she learned about him the more she felt herself falling for him. A part of her was scared, but another part was excited to get to spend time with Link. Amelia knew that these next two days were going to pass slowly because days seemed to slow down as soon as plans were made. Amelia’s phone went off with a 9-1-1 to the pit she turned to Link and gave him a smile, “Sorry, I have to go, but I’ll talk to you later.” Amelia wasn’t much for PDA, but she couldn’t help herself, she got up on her tiptoes and gave Link a quick kiss on the lips before running off to the stairs to get to the pit faster.

Amelia was just finishing with her patient in the ER and telling the intern to make sure to page her as soon as the head CT was done when Owen came up to her.

“Hey, can I ask you a favor?” Owen asked

“Sure, what’s up?”

“Can you take care of Leo this weekend, it’s been hectic with Allison waking up every two to three hours and she wakes Leo up so he’s been grumpy, and he could use a break and I know that Leo misses you.” Amelia knew that Owen would need help with Leo, and she loved spending time with him, but she had plans.

“Can I let you know at the end of the day? I sort of had plans with Link.” Amelia wanted to have Leo this weekend, but she also wanted to spend time with Link. Amelia was paged that the labs on one of her patients from earlier that day were done, so she left the ER and went to go check the labs.

It was the end of the day and Amelia was finally done for the day, but now she needed to talk to Link about how she wouldn’t be able to go on Saturday, she spent the rest of the day thinking about what she should do, and at the end she knew that Leo missed her and she missed him so to have him for the weekend would be amazing. Amelia was returning the tablet that she was using when she saw Link and she knew she had to cancel her plans. “Hey, so…I have to tell you something.”

“What’s up?” Link gave her a smile.

“I’m going to have to cancel on Saturday, Owen asked if I could take Leo this weekend, and I haven’t seen him in almost two weeks, and I really miss him. I’m sorry.” Amelia felt really bad, she knew Link was looking forward to this date and so was she, but they will just have to go another time.

“We can take him with us.” Link didn’t mind taking Leo to the game, he thought it might be fun. Link knows that Leo is important to Amelia and that it is important to her to spend time with him, and he liked spending time with Leo also. He hasn’t spent much time with him but the times that he did were fun and Link thought that he was a sweet kid.

“Are you sure? He’s going to want to run all over the place and I’m going to be distracted making sure he doesn’t hurt himself.”

“I’ll be there, we can both look after him, it will be fun.” Link was giving her the smile that she could not say no to, and maybe he’s right, it could be fun to take Leo to a baseball game.

“If you are sure, and you don’t mind I would love to take Leo with us to the game.” Amelia’s feelings for Link had grown these past couple months, but at this moment she felt herself fall a little more for Link. Was she ready to say she was in love with him? No, because she learned from her last relationship not to rush into things, right now Amelia and Link were getting to know each other. Amelia learned that Link is an incredible guitar player, and she really liked to see him while he played, it brought a smile to her face and Link learned about Amelia’s father’s death and how she and Derek were there. Link knew it meant a lot to her to be able to open up about her past so when she did, he appreciated her letting him into her life little by little.

Amelia was sitting on her bed waiting for Owen to pick up the phone, she was a bit nervous because she didn’t know how he would react to her plan to take Leo to a baseball game with Link, she really hoped it won’t be a problem.

“Hello,” Owen answered a bit flustered and she could hear Leo rambling in the background.

“Hey, how’s Leo?”

“He’s good, wide awake, but good.”

“I just wanted to let you know that I can take Leo this weekend if you still need me to.”

“Yeah, I would really appreciate it.”

“I also wanted to ask you if it’s okay that I take him to a baseball game? Link got tickets and I think it would be fun for Leo.” There was a long pause on the other line and Amelia was dreading that Owen would say no and that she wouldn’t get to see Leo.

“Ummm, sure. I am sure he will love it and will have a good time.”

“Thank you, I’ll make sure to get plenty of pictures.”

“Please do” a baby’s crying can be heard in the background, “I have to go, Allison just woke up.”

“Okay, bye.”

“Bye”

Amelia was expecting a lot more arguing and was grateful that there wasn’t any. She was really looking forward to this weekend and spending time with Link and Leo. Things are looking up in Amelia’s life right now, she is smiling more, and laughing more, and she had Link to thank for that. She had opened up to him about some things from her past, but she was scared that if she told him more and more that she would eventually scare him off. It took her a lot of courage to talk about her dad and she knew that it would take even more to talk about Ryan, and it would take all her courage to talk about Christopher. She knew it would take time, but she also knew that she wanted to have these conversations with Link because she wanted him to get to know her more. She also wanted him to open up to her to get to know the important things about him, and also the little things. Amelia realized that she wasn’t scared about a future with Link, she was looking forward to it.

The TV was on silent, subtitles ticking along across the bottom of the screen. The news…Owen turned off the subtitles, letting the the images flicker wordlessly on the screen. He sighed, folding his arms, twisting in his chair and putting his feet carefully beside Amelia’s legs. She lay flat on her back, all the equipment that spanned her stomach was bulging through the blanket. She was pregnant.

The intern who had ran her bloods had initially overlooked the fact. Only when Amelia had been put under had anybody noticed, even then it was Meredith, casually reading her charts. “Who did her bloods?” She almost screamed, stalking out into the hall. The intern stood behind the nurses station, raised his hand. Meredith raised her brows, “Page Robbins and Karev to the OR…NOW” She ordered, shocking the man into motion. She ran to the OR and burst through the doors. “Wait!” she shouted, Stopping Dr Koracick in his tracks, “I paged Robbins and Karev… She’s pregnant.”

Endgame Observations

From the scene where Tony dies that heartbreaking scene

The way Peter claws at Tony’s chest is so desperate, it’s like a child grabbing at his parent’s shirt, trying to comfort himself

It’s like trying to hold onto something he knows is floating away from him

When I first watched it, it feels like Pepper is just pushing him off to the side

But the way she grabs him is actually very gentle, and she immediately ushers him right into Rhodey’s arms, and his hand clasps over Peter’s shoulder

Because she knows someone needs to hold onto this kid that’s falling apart

But she also knows that, as long as Peter is right here in front of him, begging him to hold on, that Tony is going to keep fighting, even though they both know it’s a losing battle

I know people read the “we’re going to be okay” line to refer mostly to Pepper and Morgan, but the “you can rest now” line calls directly back to that scene at the cabin

The scene where Tony thinks about scrapping the whole thing and not risking the life he has now, and Pepper asks, “but would you be able to rest?”

Would you be able to rest, knowing that people out there are still picking up the pieces, even five years later?

Would you be able to rest, knowing that Peter Parker is out there somewhere, knowing that his family misses him, knowing that, at some point in time, his family grew to include you?

And the answer, we find out in the next scene with that photo, is no

So when she tells him, “you can rest, now”, she’s also saying, “I’ve got them. Both of them. I’ll protect your family.”

It’s fitting that Rhodey is the first one to get to Tony, because he’s always been the first one to get to Tony, has been there the longest, from the start

And then Peter comes in the middle, because he ushers in this new era in Tony’s life, is a reminder of how much Tony has grown during this eleven-year journey

And Pepper is last, because she’s the endgame

It’s her, it’s always her

She’s the only one that can tell him to let go, because he knows she’ll be there to pick up the pieces, just like she always has

He said, once, that he couldn’t sleep until he put a suit of armor around the world

But Pepper is right there, his rock, strong as always, vowing to be the suit of armor around his world

They’ll be okay, she’ll make sure of it

And when he drifts off, he’ll dream of her

Thunderstorm

anon prompt: amelia comforts betty in a thunderstorm (first time writing in a while, sorry if this sucks)

Amelia’s body jolted up at the sound of the thunder. She looked over at the digital clock, the bright red lights flashing 2:42. Just as she laid back down, trying her best to ignore the storm, she heard soft cries coming from down the hall.

She looked over her shoulder at Owen, wondering if he had heard the cries as well. He was dead asleep. Amelia pulled the blankets back and slowly got out of bed, trying not to wake Owen. As she entered the hallway, the cries became louder. She quietly opened Leo’s door, then quietly closed it once she saw he was sleeping. Amelia furrowed her eyebrows as she approached Betty’s door.

“Betty?” Amelia knocked softly on her door as she opened it. “What’s wrong?” Amelia frowned at the sight of Betty. She was sitting on her bed, knees pulled up to her chest, her head buried into her arms. “Nothing, I’m fine,” Betty replied.

“You’re crying,” Amelia stated, “you’re not fine. What happened? Are you sick?”

Betty scoffed as she wiped her eyes. “No, I’m not sick. I just hate thunderstorms,” she said.

“Oh,” Amelia titled her head. She sat on the edge of the bed, placing her hand on Betty’s knee. “I do too,” she said.

“You do?” Betty asked. “Yeah,” Amelia replied, “I do. I remember when I was 9 or 10, there was a really bad storm and I screamed so loud I woke everyone in the house up. They were all mad I woke them up and told me to go back to bed. Except Derek, my older brother. He came in my room and sat with me until I fell asleep.”

“But you were little then. I’m a 16 year old afraid of thunder storms,” Betty rolled her eyes again.

“I’m still afraid now and I’m over twice your age,” Amelia laughed, “everyone is scared of something. It doesn’t matter if you’re 9, or 16, or 35.”

“What’s Owen scared of?” Betty asked.

“Spiders. And needles,” Amelia replied right away. “Needles? But he’s a surgeon,” Betty said.

“Exactly,” Amelia laughed as she shook her head. The room lit up from lightning followed by a loud clap of thunder. Amelia noticed Betty’s body visibly shaking. “How about we watch a movie?” she clapped her hands together.

“Now? It’s almost 3 in the morning,” Betty said.

“I can’t sleep with this storm happening,” Amelia shrugged. “Okay,” Betty agreed.

“You can pick,” Amelia stood up from the bed, holding her hands out to help Betty stand.

Amelia went to the living room, followed by Betty. She grabbed a blanket from the basket and threw it on the couch. “What’s going on?” Owen rubbed his eyes as he slowly entered the living room.

“Oh, hi,” Amelia turned around, startled. “We’re watching a movie.”

“A movie? It’s 3 am,” Owen laughed. “I couldn’t sleep. The storm was scaring me,” Amelia said.

“The storm? Since when are you afraid of-,” Owen began. Amelia raised her eyebrows. Owen looked over at Betty who was sat on the couch, knees pulled up to her chest. He nodded.

“Shall I make popcorn?” he asked as he walked into the kitchen.

Strength Runs in The Family

Hello!! If I am being honest I am not sure what inspired me to write this and the title isn’t the best; but the moment I saw this prompt idea, I knew I had to go through with it and create a one-shot immediately… and I LOVE it so much! I planned on posting this story this weekend, but I was so eager to share it!

Part two of “Shepherd’s Superheroes” is still a work in progress, but until then please enjoy this angst/comfort/fluff Omeleo family, one-shot! 💗

Prompts: “Hey, look at me. Just breathe.” and “Are you okay? Do you need a hug?”

Everything in life felt as though it was moving in the slowest of slow motion as the trauma surgeon and neurosurgeon quickly made their way towards the emergency department after receiving a phone call just moments prior to the current moment. Thousands of possible scenarios ran through the brunette’s mind causing her to become more nauseous than she was earlier that morning while the ginger remained calm because although this was not just any patient, Owen knew that his son was as strong as his mama. Once arriving outside of the triage room in which they were paged to, Amelia had noticed an intern and Leo calmly sitting on the hospital bed. Her mother’s instinct took over just mere seconds before she saw Levi Schmidt snap on the light blue surgical gloves as Owen walked over to the left side of his son.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” The brunette questioned what appeared to be very hungover intern. Levi quickly turned around to see the neurosurgeon with her hands now crossed over her chest. He began to speak but no words came out of his mouth, he cleared his throat.

“This laceration looks pretty deep and I was just gonna stitch this little guy up. No neurosurgeon was available and you said to never page Dr. Nelson. And Leo here; said his parents are busy people so I thought I could maybe send him up to daycare?”

“That little guy is Dr. Hunt and I’s son, and yes; his parents are very busy people. Busy people who have to fix the mistakes that interns like you make on a daily basis. Tomorrow begins your first month of scut work.” Amelia firmly told Levi who had a terrified look on his face once hearing what the brunette had to say. He continued to stand there before Owen pointed to the door and requested him to leave. Once the intern left Amelia sat on the green medical stool on the right side of Leo and took his other free hand that Owen wasn’t holding.

“How are you feeling, baby?” Amelia asked, watching Leo casually licking the purple lollipop the intern had given to him. Owen noticed his wife grow more and more anxious as they awaited the response of their son. Constant anxiousness has been very present in the neurosurgeon’s life as late since they moved into their new home and Leo started preschool along with their surprise pregnancy, all in the span of five months.

Leo removed the lollipop to answer Amelia with his rather large vocabulary.

“Mama; why did you yell at Dr. Levi? Do I not have a brain anymore?”

Owen and Amelia shifted their eyes from their son to each other within a matter of seconds, tears collected in the brunette’s eyes at Leo’s comment. Others might have blamed her early pregnancy hormones to be the cause of what was about to turn into an emotional breakdown in only a few seconds; but not ones who knew the story such as Owen. Hearing her son question if he still had a brain and being pregnant but too early to know if the baby was healthy or not, was becoming too much for her. Before realizing it, her chest tightened and her stomach felt as though it was doing somersaults, she calmly asked Owen to page Tom to suture Leo’s laceration and quickly ran outside of the triage room. A few moments had passed until the older neurosurgeon had arrived in the room, allowing the trauma surgeon to finally catch up with his wife who had left about ten minutes ago.

“I will be right back, Leo. Stay perfectly still for, Dr. Tom and you will feel better in no time.” Owen requested of the small boy as he nodded to Tom Koracick who was informed on Leo’s minor accident. Leo watched his dad as he opened the door and walked out of the room, he then placed the lollipop back into his mouth.

“Okay, buddy. Before we begin, I gotta ask; what kind of band aid would you like?” Tom questioned the child with a large smile on his face.

“That one!”

Down the hall Owen searched for Amelia everywhere, opened every on-call room and checked in her office. Finding her nowhere the trauma surgeon grew more concerned as to where she possibly would have went and if she was okay or not, Owen searched the attendings lounge once more and grabbed his wife’s insulated water bottle that sat in her locker beside his; from afar he heard a familiar yet incredibly heart wrenching noise. No amount of hoping and praying could prepare him for what he saw from afar on a nearby and unoccupied hospital bed in the hallway. Amelia who was leaning over the bed, hysterically sobbing; alone. She held her stomach and had her eyes covered with her shaky left hand, Owen sprinted over as fast as he could towards her.

“Leo is meant to be a big brother, what if that doesn’t happen?”

“I can’t make it if this baby, if this baby isn’t healthy.”

“O, what if this baby doesn’t have a brain like Christopher.”

“I can’t take it anymore.”

The brunette sank lower into the bed and released a muffed scream into the sky blue sheets of the bed and quickly created stains from her never ending tears; as if history was repeating itself, the trauma surgeon placed the water bottle down and bent down to the ground. Owen wrapped his giant arms around Amelia to form a hug. He ran his fingers through her hair in attempts to calm her down, only this time unlike many years ago, it didn’t work as she continued to sob and grow short of breath. The man removed his arms to now hold onto her face and took in her features. The brunette’s cheeks were wet with tears, the white part of her eyes turned into a deep red and almost pinkish color that only worsened the more she cried, and her breathing was labored.

“Hey, look at me. Amelia; sweetheart. Just breathe.” Owen said multiple times until he noticed Amelia starting to calm down and her breathing normalized. Just before he started speaking to her again, the brunette placed her smaller arms around him to reciprocate his hug moments earlier.

“His response just took me off gua-“ Amelia began to tell Owen but he knew. He knew that she was not angry or upset at their son, it was that even though a small part of her has come to accept Christopher’s passing she still had a hard time with little things such as comments like Leo’s.

“I know. It’s okay. Let’s take our little man home.” Owen told her as he removed himself from the kneeling position first so that he could offer his hand to Amelia. Both of them were now in standing position and the red headed trauma surgeon gave the brunette her water bottle as they walked hand in hand.

“How did you know I needed this?”

“We know everything about each other but ourselves; remember?” He said to her with a smile on his face when he felt Amelia rested her head on his shoulder, making their way back to the emergency department peacefully.

Once arriving back into the emergency department Amelia saw Tom at the front nurses desk and Leo behind with three of the nurses, the former mentor and student made eye contact with each other. They shared a tired yet understanding smile before Owen and Amelia walked over to their son.

“Did you page Dr. Shepherd yet? I know; she’s busy but she has patients to take care of! And don’t get me started on how many patients Dr. Hunt has. Oh my word!” Tom jokingly told Leo as he acted like he was angry as he searched through all the patients on the tablet in front of him. The little boy laughed at the blonde neurosurgeon, causing all three adults to also laugh amongst one another. Leo removed himself from the spinning chair and made his way to where both of his parents were standing, once near them he saw his mama and looked up at her.

“Are you okay, mama? Do you need a hug to make it feel better?”

Holding back from now crying happy and hormonal tears this time, the neurosurgeon cleared her throat and glanced at Owen. She bent down and took Leo’s small hands in hers before speaking.

“I would love that, baby.” Amelia told her three year old, and before she had time to think Leo wrapped his arms around his mama as tight as his toddler strength allowed and didn’t let go until the brunette picked him up to form a cuddle.

Owen placed his hand on the small of her back as he watched the two loves of his life hug one another. He smiled after yet again adding to his mental checklist at how grateful he is, walking beside his family.

How Does A Moment Last Forever

I don’t really know what this is, and I haven’t written a fic in so long, so this could definitively be better, but oh well. 

This is set somewhere in 14x18 I guess, but not at all what I think will happen on the episode.

Partially ignore timelines (look at me, learnig from Grey’s writers) or any (likely) medical error.

How Does A Moment Last Forever

Amelia Shepherd made her to the pit after receiving a 911 page. Nothing new there. But she was definitively surprise when she saw her ex-husband ready and waiting for the two incoming ambulances.

“Hey!”

“Hi.” Okay, he was definitively in a bad mood. The tone of his voice, his facial expression and his body language were a very clear indication of his mood.

“Where have you been? I haven’t seen you for the last couple of days.”

“Went to Germany.”

“Oh.” And now she felt her good mood going down too. Yes, she was the one who told him to chase after Teddy, but deep down she actually hoped he wouldn’t. She wasn’t going let him know that though, “So how did it go?” her voice dripping with fake detachment.

“I don’t wanna talk about it. And it’s none of your business.” Owen made his way to the first ambulance pulling up, leaving a confused Amelia behind.

Karev, who had joined them at some point during the conversation, looked at her side ways, “What’s his problem?”

“Apparently it’s none of my business.”

Alex was about to respond, when Hunt called his name, wanting his his help on the 9 year old patient.

The two male surgeon’s checked the patient’s vitals, agreeing the child wasn’t in danger, just some scratches. They wheeled the gurney inside at the same time the second ambulance arrived, out of the corner of their eyes seeing Amelia running towards it, immediately taking control of the situation.

Then all the sudden an explosion was heard. Owen and Alex duked, covering their heads, and turned around in time to see bits of the ambulance flying in all directions.

Before either one could even process what was happening, the trauma surgeon took off, running towards the ambulance, or what was left of it anyway, screaming Amelia’s name.

Her ears were ringing. And her head was pounding.

Her entire body hurt to be honest.

She tried to open her eyes, as best as she could, and all she could see was smoke everywhere.

In the distance, she could hear someone calling for her. The voice was deep and it sounded desperate, but it was also so familiar, and for some reason it gave her a sense of security.

“Amelia! Amelia!”

“Damn it, where the hell is she?” a different voice could be heard, equally deep and familiar. Why did they sound so far away?

“Amelia!”

Amelia tried to get up, even though she was fairly certain that at least one of her ribs was poking her lungs. She had to lay back down and close her eyes, the dizziness she was feeling was definitively not a good sign. Resting for a bit seemed like a better idea.

Suddenly two strong hands gently touched her face, while two fingers pressed against the side of her neck, checking her pulse.

“Her pulse is good. Check her pupils!”

“They’re reactive. Amelia? Hey, can you hear me? Amelia?”

She wanted to answer but her brain was having a hard time catching up. Before she could notice, she was being placed on a gurney and being carried inside. Her lungs immediately welcomed the clear air, while at the same time coughing out the smoke.

“Look, I’m fine! It’s just some bruises and scratches.”

She was now in one of the trauma rooms. She could barely move her head because Koracick insisted on immobilizing her neck, just to be safe, but out of the corner of her eye she could see Alex, Meredith and Jackson, who seemed to be taking care of a relatively small burn on her leg which was surely going to leave a scar.

Amelia could feel someone holding her left hand, gently stroking it, but she couldn’t see them.

“Amelia, you were thrown back from the blast. You probably hit your head and I want to do an ultrasound to rule out any possible internal bleeding.”

“There’s no need-“

“Just let her check!” said Alex fed up with the neurosurgeon’ stubbornness. Ever since Amelia shared a piece of her past with him, Alex sort of her saw her in a different light. And after spending all these months working closely with Amelia on their project, she had become a good friend of his and in a weird way, he felt very protective of her.

Fine…” she sighed, lacking the energy to fight them. “Can we take this thing off now? My neck is fine.”

“Still a pain in the ass, even after an explosion.”, Koracick teased her in his usual manner, having walked back into the room, but did as she asked. “I have the results of your CT. No intercranial bleeding or swelling. Congratulations, it’s a grade 3 concussion. You know the treatment.”

Amelia rolled her eyes, despite the bitching headache. Finally being able to move her neck, she looked to her left and saw Owen sitting on a stool, holding onto her hand, his face tight as if he was in pain. At the same time, she felt Meredith lift her shirt, or what was left of it anyway, and start the ultrasound. 

The brunette winced when Meredith pushed the probe a little harder on her bruised and battered abdomen.

“How are you feeling?”

“Like I was blown up.”

Alex smiled, “The pain killers will kick in soon, you’ll feel better.”

“No opioids, you know I-”

“I know, don’t worry.”, he shot her a reassuring smile.

Meanwhile, Meredith was checking her abdomen, silently praying her sister-in-law was okay and there would be no bleeding. As annoying as she found Amelia to be more often than not, she couldn’t possibly deny the affection she felt for the feisty neurosurgeon. Besides, she couldn’t lose another Shepherd.

“Everything seems fine.” Meredith smiled, moving the probe lower on Amelia’s abdomen.

“So can I go home and rest, becau-“

Amelia was interrupted when a heartbeat sounded off in the room. It was fast and strong. And it made everyone freeze.

Meredith looked at the ultrasound screen and saw what looked to be a blurry image of a tiny baby.

“Congratulations?”

Amelia’s world stopped. Breathe Amelia, just breath. – she told herself. She felt Owen’s grip on her hand tightening and his voice calling her name. She could hear the confusion, the questions and the surprise.

But all she could do was look at Alex Karev, knowing he would understand the look in her eye.
