FABRICLIVE 95: Mefjus

Two friends come together for a synth-driven EP of retro-delight, conjuring up memories of Blame's legendary 720 Degrees Recordings at its finest.
Seba has established a reputation as one of the finest purveyors of quality Drum & Bass over a distinguished career that stretches back 20 years. From his early tracks on LTJ Bukem’s ground-breaking label Good Looking Records to his more recent work across Metalheadz, Soul:r, Hospital & his own Seceret Operations, Seba's music retains a timeless appeal, bringing together beats and bass in classic yet inimitable style. Ethereal atmospheres, crisp breaks and sublime bass rhythms are hallmarks of a sound Seba has made his own. Uplifting and otherworldly, Ulrich Schnauss combines multilayered synthesizers with beats and ethereal vocals, creating an aural escape route from the trappings of reality. After a slew of atmospheric D&B releases in the 1990s Ulrich moved towards his own style of ambient electronica, melding delicate dreampop sensibilities with ecstatic electronic excess, defying the constraints of traditional music genre boundaries. He has released 8 LPs and countless singles, both solo and collaborative and, aside from his own releases and live tours, Ulrich is also a member of electronica legends Tangerine Dream.

Synkro - Hand In Hand
Following the release of Synkro AKA Joe McBride collection of his formative early works earlier this year, Apollo Recordings is proud to present a brand new EP that draws on the rich heritage of library music.
Despite having come up during the dubstep era McBride’s music has always resisted easy classification - ‘Hand In Hand’ sees him shift his musical focus in a yet more cinematic direction.
McBride explains : "The record was inspired and influenced by my love of electronic 80's UK library records like the Chappell AV series, Bruton, Soundstage & De Wolfe Music library. Theres a lot of synth work that carries on from my album using my trusted Juno-6 / SH101 / JX8P combo with the addition of drum samples via an old akai S2800 I purchased recently. Most sounds I've made from scratch on hardware based on sounds used in the library records i mentioned above along with a few cheeky samples."
Synkro's signature expansive atmospherics are still very much present, but now they have been burnished by soaring synth pads and pulsing drum tracks that call to mind the haunted melancholy of John Carpenter or contemporary such as Legowelt or Andy Stott. Rhythmically ‘Hand In Hand’ sees McBride moving somewhat away from his usual off kilter programming inspired by 2-step and garage, embracing the steady pulse of 4:4 which turns out to be an effortless fit.

It seems as if 15 years have quickly flown by since we first opened our doors at the base of the famous Oberbaumbrücke joining Berlin’s Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain districts. With countless long nights into majestic mornings and open airs in our beloved city to showcases spanning the globe, Watergate has grown to include a booking agency and a record label pushing the sounds of our mainstay artists and some of the most revered acts in the scene. To celebrate our journey over the last decade and a half we have put together a special anniversary release of 25 new, exclusive and formerly unreleased tracks to be released as a 2x CD set with our traditional Watergate artwork as well as a special collector's edition box set as a 5x vinyl, 2x CD package including a commemorative art print, two free entries to the club itself and the very special photo book ‘Sound Travels’ by Linus Dessecker which features photos and interviews of artists that played at Watergate when they arrived or left Berlin, all wrapped up in a sleek minimalistic package entitled “WATERGATE XV”.
Encompassing music from club residents like Matthias Meyer, Jimi Jules, Marco Resmann, La Fleur, Tiefschwarz, Floyd Lavine, Lee Jones, Adana Twins, Sebo K, Hyenah and Cinthie and new comers Gorje Hewek & Izhevski, Gumz and Ryan Davis to friends and cohorts who have close ties to the club such as Butch, Henrik Schwarz, Ellen Allien, Alex Niggemann, Catz n’ Dogz, Steve Bug, Osunlade, Solomun, Rodriguez Jr., Oliver Koletzki, Anja Schneider, Mathias Kaden and Kollektiv Turmstrasse, WATERGATE XV comprises of a plethora of sounds you have come to anticipate from our home along the Spree. From deep and euphoric cuts to lush organics tracks to heavier, peak time compositions, this compilation finds a moment that encapsulates every aspect of the sounds of Watergate.
We think this body of music perfectly captures our essence, whether it’s under our famous LED’s, on the waterfloor watching the sun rise or at any of our showcases and open airs the world over. We hope it can spark a memory in your mind to a moment we shared over the last 15 years. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to share these moments and music and here is to many more years together on the dance floor with you.

Cosmic Bridge welcomes yet another new talent to the roster: UK producer Crypticz delivers 2-stepping distillations of dubwise emotive drum & bass & ambient meditations and balances the itching tension of technoid rhythms with the relaxed ease of dub echoes.
Forever was put together over the past year by Om Unit and Crypticz — with the label boss inviting Parsons “to take more risks and guiding him into the fog.” As a result, the EP offers a distilled, more refined take on the dub aesthetic that has powered the young producer’s music to date and folllows EPs and singles for Different Music, Inflect Audio, and Doc Scott’s own 31 Records. Fifteen Years Of Underground Sonics
Critical Music reaches its 100th release in its 15th year, celebrating with the landmark album ‘Fifteen Years Of Underground Sonics’. Spanning the broad spectrum of drum & bass that the Critical sound represents, the exceptional ‘15’ album is as bold as it is beautiful and looks to serve the test of time in the D&B history books.
“Over the past 15 years the label I started as a hobby, as a way to involve myself in drum and bass, has taken over my life. I’m so lucky to have worked with such incredible artists, have them realise their creativity, and travelled all over the world spreading the sound I love.
I deliberated for a long time over what type of record we should put together to celebrate reaching both our 15th birthday and 100th release. I like to think of us as a label that looks forward, that focuses on what the future holds and on how to make statements without sacrificing our core ideals, to release exciting music centred around the 170bpm tempo. So with this in mind I wanted the LP to be about where the label is now and where it’s going, a snapshot of the music that represents the Critical sound by core label acts and some choice friends.
This album is an insight into Critical Music in 2017 and a thank you to all who have been involved in any way over the past 15 years.” Kasra Critical

Synkro - Memories (2008-2011)
Following Synkro AKA Joe McBride 2015’s stellar debut album ‘Changes’, Apollo Recordings is proud to present a collection of his formative early works.
Originally released on scene stalwart labels such as Smokin’ Sessions, Blackout, Box Clever, Med School and Exit Records, these tracks displays the music that forged his career tracking his progression up to signing to Apollo.
Despite having come up during the dubstep era McBride’s music has always resisted easy classification - winding together such diverse influences as Boards Of Canada, dBridge, Burial and Oneohtrix Point Never, whilst still remaining utterly unique.
The trademark warm sonics, and emotive melodies that were ever-present in ‘Changes’ are in strong evidence here - lush pads, ambient/balearic washes and soulful vocals, underpinned by a skeleton of tough, crisp beats. What is most surprising and captivating about these early works is just how consistent McBride’s sonic vision remains - melancholic, cinematic, soothing yet vital - his is a strong and truly unique voice nearly a decade into his career.
