I’ve been told that New York always looks forward. That London is content, Paris is resigned, but New York - New York is always hopeful. So I find it fitting, perhaps even meaningful, that I was raised an hour or so north of the metropolis. One night I found myself faced with the difficulty of explaining what effect “slightly upstate New York” had on me. I tried to explain how it felt to walk home and watch cars pass by on Route 9 and Spackenkill Road, but hear echoes of Broadway instead; feel Fifth vibrating inside of me. “I had that silly romantic notion,” I said, as we cut through Manhattan, “that once I got away to New York everything would be okay.” I believed that if you could make it in New York, you could make it anywhere. And I thought I could make it in New York. I thought I could find love there. Elusive love, walking shadow-like down street blocks. Untamable love, flitting over zebra stripes like a spring bird.
