i wanna talk more about ryland "i like to put up walls in my relationships anyway" grace, who is extremely sociable and likable on the one hand, and yet so very alone and alienated on the other.

because yes! he gets along with people quite well and they like and (especially if you refer to book canon) put a lot of trust in him on a professional and personal level. but i would argue that trust is not mutual! he likes people, he jokes with them, supports them, makes them feel at ease. he is attached to everyone on the petrova taskforce but he doesnt really open up any emotional attack surface where it comes to himself (bar a couple minor examples, like movie!grace talking to stratt about the party; but also, he still talks about those feelings in a way that is detached from himself, "its such a weird party"). he doesnt connect with anyone on a truly (emotionally) intimate level - and that is why he stays isolated, that is why he gets a singular polaroid depicting only himself while ilyukhina and yao get entire albums!

anyway it's important to me that grace's arc is not just about becoming brave in the grander, "heroic selflessness" sense, but about learning to open up and allowing himself to become emotionally vulnerabie. phm is great because it asks: would you overcome your fear of genuine vulnerability to connect with someone and let them truly see your heart if the world depended on it?

grace answers this question with a resounding yes.

okay but can I just say the sign of the times scene in project hail mary moved me so much. like that is more than a favorite song or a silly reference. that is this character who largely takes a secretive, impersonal stance to her work and the people involved acknowledging how frightening the unknown behind the project is. that is a silent action of respect to the courage that these people share, to give up their time and loved ones and possibly their lives to something that might not even work, a desperate, relatable grasp at the impossible. that is a shared experience of wanting to squeeze all that is pleasant in life into the next few hours. that is a piece of the beauty of humanity: that we try and try and try even when nothing seems clear.

the aroace read of ryland grace is so personal and haunting. "you don't even have a dog." was it not enough to love the world for the sake of living in it. was it not enough to live for the thrill of discovery. was it not enough to smile at your students. was it not enough to be afraid.

I remember one time I got INSANELY high off of edibles while playing Among Us, and it quickly became apparent to the other players online. I forget how honestly but literally anything "sus" I did was ignored by everyone because I was so fucking high. I tested this theory by standing in front of a body and the person that actually reported it didn't even mention me. The funniest part was when I was trying to do wires, I kept fucking up over and over again, so I was just standing in front of wires for actual minutes trying to figure it out. A small crowd of players gathered around me to watch and would get mad every time someone reported a body or emergency meeting because "she's never going to get her tasks done if you keep interrupting them." I don't think anyone cared about winning at that point, they just wanted to see the high crew mate succeed in her tasks.

Maybe I’m crazy but I don’t see enough people talking about Fionna’s outfit when she goes to the club in the new ep (s2ep3) (mini analysis past the break)

She spent all of s1 slowly diverting from her original design, starting with switching from a skirt to shorts. Prismo saying “Weird, you never any trouble with skirts in my stories…” marks the moment Fionna obviously begins evolving into her own person.

Then, Fionna’s clothes divert more and more from her original, fin-esc design from episode to episode as she develops more and more into her own individual character. I think this is probably obvi to everyone watching, not just me

Then, in s2, we see that her outfits have basically nothing to do with that design! She’s grown into herself….

Until it’s time to go see DJ Flame. Her outfit here is obviously a play on the OG design, but with a twist that isn’t quite fionna’s style either. She’s cowering back into her original design because she’s no longer dressing for herself; she’s dressing in hopes others will like her. She’s dressing to be who she thinks DJ Flame wants her to be instead of being herself. And it DOESN’T WORK. Even when she puts herself into this box, she still isn’t loved. She obviously battles a lot of low self worth this season, but this is the cherry on top. I think it’s also why she tells Hunter to “Stop being nice” when he sees her being her most raw and vulnerable self. She doesn’t believe she is worth kindness when she isn’t trying to fit into the box of “hero,” or “fin,” or whatever she thinks is hunter’s type. So why is he being so nice?

And I know Fionna wore outfits unlike fin’s before being zapped into ooo in s1, but from a meta standpoint, the parallel development between her clothes and her character starting in episode 4 is likely just because the writers felt that was when the story really started.

ANYWAYS this is nothing special- I dont post analysis stuff often but I do think about the media I consume A LOT, so if people enjoy this maybe I’ll share my bigger thoughts later (I’m afraid of interacting with fandom spaces)

Been thinking about how the new Superman movie did a really good job of giving Clark interests beyond “Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow.” He likes pop punk rock. His favorite meal is breakfast for dinner. Clark does a little dance when he gets the front cover byline. He likes to doom-scroll. Unclear if he’s a dog guy. His girlfriend makes him hot cocoa when he’s sad. So often Superman in film has zero personality beyond tortured alien that must guide humanity. Giving him these small details made the character feel so much more real. He really is just a guy doing his best.

In my opinion it's a lot more healthy to be able to own that you dislike someone for petty reasons than to do all kinds of mental gymnastics to make everyone you don't really vibe with out to be a bad person actually
