Better people will come through when you least expect it, and I’m living proof that this exists. I left social media for months due to cyber bullying for being a Blinger (a SHINee fan that is Jonghyun biased) and decided to go to cupsleeve events to find K-Pop fans. By chance, I met two K-Pop fans on the streets of Piccadilly Circus/Oxford Circus that are super into K-Pop and love me for who I am without changing or removing any aspect of my identity. Pretty much, I feel comfortable talking about SHINee and Jonghyun with them without feeling awkward or judged. Everything is two-sided, authentic and this is the first time I ever felt like I wasn’t second priority in a friendship. I met other great Shawols too, but I just had to show my latest win.

If finding friends online isn’t working for you, then you can take a break and find friends elsewhere. Just because we’re living in the 21st century, doesn’t mean EVERYONE is looking for friends online. You got to try and find a place that makes you feel welcome and comfortable. There’s plenty of places that you could find, or you could just be lucky and bumped into the right person at the right time. Just get yourself out there and you could find someone without realising it.

just to prove it to everyone, this is how it has been advertised.

my friend literally thought he was finally being understood, but it’s literally just an advertisement for a resource that is only specifically for BLACK WOMEN AND GIRLS.

if it was a advocate for black women’s health in general, then he wouldn’t be complaining like this. this is literally clickbaiting. if you’re going to do something for mental health for specific people, at least be explicit on what is your service for.

can you imagine having anxiety online and then seeing this ad thinking it was about a black women speaking out about her struggles with anxiety online just to find out that the resources was not targeted for you. literally you had been feeling alone for i don’t know how many months and then you get shunned when you find out that you had found what you’re looking for.

THANK YOU! The problem isn’t because the resources are only for black women and girls, but it’s because of THIS specific ad. they used a specific subject that not everyone is talking about that could relate to all kinds of people but are afraid to speak out.

as someone who has faced anxiety whilst being online, i thought that i was finally being seen after months of being alone. 2022 was the worst year for me due to cyber bullying because of the death of my kpop bias, most of which came from this app. people had harassed me in dms and would send through my inbox triggering messages that almost lead me to suicide. it was so bad that it had crept into my real life and i almost decided to quit college due to the fact that i lost motivation in learning and i was scared to go outside of my house thinking that people would recognise me from online and i would get assaulted from rioters.

this is why i took multiple breaks from this app and tried many times to quit tumblr. this was the app that has caused me to take my own life and i’d never forgive the people that had caused me so much pain for the past 12 months. the fact that i came back one day to see this ad gave me hope — someone who was going to speak out about her struggles and hopefully feel less alone or weird having anxiety whilst being online. this app is so damaging for people who struggles with anxiety who may not fit the criteria for their “campaign” that they deliberately did not explicitly say on their ad.

there was nothing wrong with campaigning against mental health for black women, it’s when they use a subject (“navigating anxiety in a lonely, digital world”) that nobody talks about much to advertise their resources that was only for a specific amount of people which is black women. THAT’S THE PROBLEM! and then you expect them to find other resources like there’s any other resources that mentions that same subject but is available for me? that’s the problem with people. they’re so closed minded to the point where when they see people talk about any argument that isn’t about racism or sexism, it’s not valid even though we both agree on the same thing. we can agree that this ad is hating on black women, but it’s also pretty exploitative for people who also has anxiety or online anxiety like me that doesn’t fit the criteria.

they need to be MORE EXPLICIT with what their ad is for. it’s just common sense. if they’re looking to advertise to black women with anxiety, then i don’t think they’re doing it well because it attracted me to their post.

i never said that i don’t like black women. i was saying that there’s a pattern of black women resources being advertised more than anything else. this ISN’T me dogpiling on black mental health. i was pointing at what i see the most. i am NOT american so i don’t know if there’s anything out there as the uk doesn’t really provide very much for anyone of my demographic specifically.

as for my argument against the “black girl breathing” ads, this was in behalf of my FRIEND who has seen the poster saying “being lonely in a digital world” making him think that it was a BLACK WOMAN or a group of people speaking out about feeling lonely being online as THIS WAS EXACTLY WHAT HE WAS GOING THROUGH just for him to find out that it was a resource ad for black women and girls.

first of all… i would like to say thank you guys for speaking out in behalf of me.

yes i am the black guy who was affected by this banner. although i’m not the target audience, the fact that they would advertise a literal black women’s advocacy campaign for mental health by putting something like “being lonely in a digital world” and expecting only black women to respond.

it was super disheartening to see this banner. i’ve been struggling with depression and anxiety due to online bullying since around the beginning of 2020 and it has been getting worse from dec 2021.

seeing a banner that resonates with me was something i’ve never thought i’d ever see in my life. i finally thought that i was not alone, that there were people who were also feeling the same as me whilst being online. i didn’t even know that it was a real thing until i saw that banner.

that’s why it’s super damaging and why i wanted to speak out. thanks to my friend @jonghyuns-husband i had came out of my shell to finally talk about my side and how it could be damaging for me as a black man, as someone who doesn’t fit the criteria but related to that banner alone.

clickbait may seem like harmless fun, but it can really damage people. i thought there was hope for me, until i realised that it was too good to be true. i never thought i would ever find someone who would understand me and find a group of friends who feels exactly the same way.

i often feel like a loser for going online and not enjoying it like my siblings or cousins. everyone seems to be having fun — but me. i thought i was overthinking for a second, until i’ve met asahi. he felt exactly like me and knows how i feel. i’ve even found someone with online social anxiety like me, who is too afraid of being ghosted after a fine conversation.

yes the banner is racist, but i just want people to hear me and to be heard. i’m sick and tired of suffering in silence. if i’m getting shadowbanned, please make sure to reblog so i could reach more people.

i wouldn't be surprised if that was the case. they would a subject that can touch all types of people but only advertise it for specifically black women. although i wasn't the one who spotted this out (it was @jjongolese in which he was a black man who related to the post "being lonely in a digital world") it did feel kinda wrong seeing that post even though what they're posting seems to be positive.

i was literally talking about this banner to my friend (black woman) the other day. i found it weird that resources like these including target audiences being either gender specific (mainly female — trans or cis) or/and race specific (mainly black/african-american or hispanic) being advertised and barely see anything else and those didn't fit the criteria are expected to "find other resources" when it's literally ever anything that is "black women" or "trans black women" that would be shown more in adverts. how are people supposed to know that there are stuff for them out there if there isn't much people talking about them.
