woong is from seoul, which is where he spent the first seven (7) years of his life. but then his parents divorced super suddenly & his dad ~kept the house~ so woong, his mom and his four siblings had to find somewhere else to go. they ended up moving to handong-ri on jeju island and settling in with the mom’s parents on their tangerine farm. so....... yeah he moved from seoul to a fuckin village 😭

really spacious house, really spacious property, really pretty property, but woong was not happy at all. he missed seoul & missed his dad, who made no effort to continue being a father figure after the divorce which was also Really Shocking because he was a great dad before that.

but, life goes on. woong was still really young anyway, so he adjusted to the farm life + to jeju. he ended up finding an activity that got him off the farm and that he actually really, really liked, too  —  soccer!!! he was a fast learner, naturally athletic so he did well and his coach had a LOT of faith in him. eventually he formed the plan to return to seoul as an athlete / to train in a big sports center there but y’know... life can’t be that easy.

aka he got badly injured during a match in 2013 / when he was 16. managed to tear BOTH his acl and pcl, so his leg was Fucked. had to get surgery and the whole recovery process (including physical therapy) took a year and some change. very bad time. i would even call it a Horrible time. he didn’t feel like he was good at anything other than soccer so he was like damn... how am i gonna get out of here now?

but he had his height and his subjective good looks going for him 🤪 in 2014, he had more or less recovered as well as he was going to, was kinda tentative about trying soccer again but Wanted to. before he could work up the courage, he was street casted by a dimensions rep. his family clowned him hard for thinking it was real so he kinda went to the audition to prove that he’s not THAT dumb, kinda went bc he needed an excuse to get tf back into a city, man. handong was NOT cutting it for him.

long story short he became a trainee from pure luck (and some natural talent ig), moved to seoul which fucked up his family relationships to some extent bc him leaving was VERY sudden, no one except his oldest sister even knew that he had been planning to leave for sports. assumed he’d stay there forever, thought it was fucked up that he was so quick to run away.

i’m gonna jump ahead to 2021... i wouldn’t really say that he hates unity, but he definitely feels like an outsider looking in. doesn’t have a background in music, so being an idol at all still feels really weird, but especially with unity’s ~experimental~ music.

he’s distant. when he was younger (and even in his earlier idol days), he was nice enough. not loud, but would laugh and play along with others if they spoke to him first, would reach out to others first on occasion. but his company-assigned image is a mix between tsundere & the “assa” / outsider type; detached, fine on his own, a bit cold/mean/aggressive. like vixx’s leo earlier on but a little more toned-down. going with the outsider portion, he also has the clueless/living under a rock vibe going for him, so fans call him caveman woong 💀 it used to be JUST an image but ultimately fucked up his ability to connect with other people so now he’s rly like that most of the time (and really doesn’t keep up with the world LOL) you can talk to him but his social skills are so bad now that he’ll ignore you but not on purpose.... mf just doesn’t know what to say ever bc he’s been told Not To Talk so much.

he isn’t.... necessarily... mean. he can be, but i’d personally say that he’s more of a self-focused, no bullshit type. really lonely guy who doesn’t know how to interact with others anymore. i guess he wants to relearn people skills, but he’s not trying at the moment. content to just float around in his bubble.

known for being really strong/athletic, which has become one of his very few defining characteristics as an idol. he cannot count the times that he’s shown off his strength by holding a note while splitting fruit on variety shows or dribbled soccer balls for extended periods of time. He’s Tired.

a lesser-known skill he shows off sometimes is his ability to identify plants. if you don’t know him as the athletic guy or the cold guy, you probably know him as the nature guy. he has most korea-native plants memorized and he’s currently working on learning exotic plants. one unspoken goal he has is to show off on a show like law of the jungle.

he raises a bunch of different fish / water-dwelling creatures. has three different tanks.

talks to his fish like they’re babies. if you ever catch him doing this, no you didn’t <3

he used to be REALLY secretive about his family, only ever said that he used to live in jeju but never shared details or clarified any speculations. his privacy disappeared when his family started promoting the tangerine farm as “a place full of unity’s woong’s charms” and allowing visitors, which pissed him off SO BAD because they were making money off of HIS labor... and then they realized he has a lot of fans & they couldn’t handle it, so they closed off the farm to the public again. somehow, this made him even more angry.

he doesn’t really do any solo activities and idk if i’m ever going to push him as an individual? idk i might but he’s honestly not that interesting/appealing to anyone other than his stans so i don’t see the company pushing him and he doesn’t have much of a desire to do anything on his own in the public eye, either. lowkey so tired that he kinda wishes he’d just stayed in jeju but at the same time..... knows if he had, he’d still be looking for a way out??? idk he’s just here to promote unity’s ~experimental~ songs and pretend like he has a sense of identity.

the smile on haneul’s face contradicted the thoughts that were running through her head. have they had an unpleasant encounter before? “that’s perfect.” she knew that the other wasn’t exactly pleased to be talking to her based off his tone, but she’s already this far into the conversation. maybe she could take a page out her mother’s book and just… not care. just take whatever she was given and try to steer the conversation back into comfortable territory.

her grin slightly falters for a split second as she tilts her head to the side at him. “i’m sorry to hear about your unwanted interactions with strangers. maybe you’ll have better luck next time around?” haneul’s wavering confidence is hard to notice past her habit of talking a lot more than necessary. “but invisibility is definitely a great one. i’d pick that so i could actually have time to myself as well, but since you chose that one already, i’ll pick a different one. hm, what about telepathy? is that one good? that’s probably like my third pick, but i think it’d come in handy sometimes.” 

in a split-second, taewoong’s expression turns from some pained look of forced amiability to utter confusion. maybe a tinge of embarrassment, too — and all it takes is realizing that the meaning of telepathy has slipped his mind. in a matter of seconds, he silently reprimands himself for not paying more attention to those ‘boring superhero movies’ certain groupmates had watched before they began living independently. “telepathy, as in...” think, think, think. do not be caught slipping. “... moving things with your mind, right? ... why?”

he shifts his weight from one foot to the other, weighing his options. if he were to sprint right now, would she remember? maybe it’s too early into the conversation for it to leave a lasting mark in her mind... but if it does, then... what’ll she think of him? best to brave this one out. he clears his throat, tries to look natural. somehow, his intense attempts to seem as casually knowledgeable as possible have muted his ever-present temper. that’s a good thing, at least. “most people would go for their second choice if their first has already been taken, though..? i’m kind of curious about what’s in second place now. is it embarrassing?”

moon taewoong + bird-watching!

taewoong doesn’t have many hobbies, but the few ones that he does have are very, very special to him. first in line is bird-watching — an activity that brought him comfort as a trainee and continues to bring him comfort to this day. he thinks birds are the best creatures out there, so it’s only natural that he’d spend his free time studying them.

woong was first introduced to bird-watching when he was around eight years old. all he really did outside of school was sit under the same tree and feel sorry for himself, so his grandma eventually realized he needed a distraction from his Woe Is Me attitude. the solution? “going grocery shopping in town.”

woong hated the farm, so he’d always eagerly accept an opportunity to get away. however, they never actually went grocery shopping. every single time, she’d take him to some little corner of nature and whip out her binoculars.

he fell for this shit every time!!! why? because he was eight.

for a while, he’d complain about how boring it was, how boring she was, how he didn’t understand why he had to sit around and look at a bunch of birds just ‘cause she didn’t want to do it alone. too young and oblivious to realize that she was really just trying to share her peace/happiness with him, and in retrospect, he does feel guilty about all the times he gave her hell for it.

eventually he started playing soccer, which took up most of his time & he used it as an excuse to not go bird-watching with her anymore, but once he stopped he realized that he... kind of missed it? what the fuck?

but he didn’t go bird-watching again until he was around 17, a very lonely trainee in seoul who just wanted to feel connected to something again. started out just chilling in parks when he had free time, looking at the pigeons and feeding them even though it usually lead to someone telling him That’s Not Allowed!

the hobby stayed pretty simple until he debuted, which is when he really, really needed a distraction. he bought binoculars & bird-watching books and started taking day-trips when he wasn’t busy to random places that strangers on the internet said were good for spotting birds — for some reason, he was embarrassed about this hobby, so he never talked about it to anyone. in 2021, it’s still really secretive.

because of his desire to keep this hobby a secret, he covers his face really well when he’s on a bird-watching trip. scarves, sunglasses, mask... sometimes he looks super shady, but he doesn’t care.

if you ever run into him on an off-day and see his bird-watching book, binoculars, or his Bird Notebook in his hands... no you didn’t.

speaking of the bird notebook, taewoong isn’t artistically inclined by any means, but he likes to sketch the birds that he sees. just rough sketches, obviously, though every now and then he’ll get ahead of himself and try to make them look better. he takes notes too: things like their behavior, where exactly he saw them.

one of his favorite things is going on picnics by himself, just chilling somewhere private and spending a few hours watching birds. it’s A Healing Experience.

posts anonymously on bird-watching forums, asks for the best places in korea (or abroad, when he’s on tour) to see certain types of birds. always has incognito mode on because he will NOT be caught slipping.

his favorite birds are cormorants, masked boobies, turtle doves, pigeons and snow geese, but he likes anything with wings. there are birds he’d rather avoid or ones that he isn’t as excited to see, but he doesn’t really have one he blatantly Doesn’t Like.

his dream is to see a blue-eyed ground dove, but considering how rare they are, he knows it’s far-fetched and probably will never happen. still... a man can dream

some day, sunghee will drag one of the comfortable chairs in front of the big windows in their living room. with their feet against the glass, they will open the upper part of the window, a joint in one of their hands, some type of snack in the other. they will sit there for as long as their mind allows them to – which is usually a lot when weed is in the equation like this – thoughts drifting freely. there’s a lot of comfort to be found in being alone. no one’s demanding anything from them, be that attention or “proper” reactions. sunghee’s been tiring so much and so fast lately, even more than usual, to the point where forcing themselves to emote in public is not something they bother to do anymore. let anyone they come across on the street believe they have a resting bitch face.

today, sunghee has company. they don’t remember if the person came to visit them or jaeyeol, if there’s a reason they are around or they just came for the sake of it – sunghee wasn’t paying attention when they let them in, so it could be the weed but it can also just be them. sunghee can’t help feeling a bit forced to engage as it’s what most people expect from them, anyway. joint in one hand, tube of sour cream pringles in the other, this time the chair is facing the couch instead of the windows. “aliens. yes or no?”

it’s boredom that chases taewoong to sunghee’s side, and maybe a pinch of loneliness, too, though he won’t admit it. he hadn’t been expecting sunghee to be high — tells himself that he shouldn’t have bothered coming over, but then tells himself that it’s better this way. at least if they’re high, they won’t question woong’s sudden plea for coexistence. it’s awkward at first—as any social interaction is when perceived by woong—but he eventually settles into the comfortable silence, staring at the screen of his phone. all he really wants is the company, so he considers it a strike of bad luck when sunghee speaks up. of course it has to be about aliens, too; has he won the lottery? it keeps getting better.

he stretches his legs out, even tilts his head far to one side until his neck cracks, then to the other as if the impending conversation is something that he has to shake off his laziness for. “i’m the wrong person to be talking to about aliens,” he starts, tone half-bored as he continues looking at his phone. “to give a short answer, no. to give details, i think that it’s fuckin’ ridiculous to assume we’re alone in the universe, but i think it’s equally ridiculous to assume that any other life out there is drastically different from our own. we’re not in a sci-fi film.” he locks his phone screen and straightens his posture slightly, planting his feet firmly on the ground again as he leans forward in his seat. seems more interested than before, but really, he’s trying to derail the conversation before it gets to a point that he can’t follow along. “i wouldn’t mind if aliens existed if they looked like the ones from coneheads, though. you ever seen that movie? it’s old as shit, american. bet we could stream it — do you want to?”

after years of thinking she was going after something unachievable, haneul was finally able to make her debut. with a song like “singing in the rain” that wasn’t too difficult for her to pull off, there was simply nothing that could break the spell she was seemingly under. she hadn’t been paying attention to the feedback of the single either as it wasn’t a song she was deeply in love with or cared for. therefore, everywhere the newly debuted idol went there was a spring in her steps, accompanied by soft hums of whatever song was on her mind.

haneul’s hums died down once she saw a familiar face. one she couldn’t determine whether it’s an ‘i’ve seen you on my phone screen’ familiar face or a ‘we have talked before’ familiar face. she couldn’t remember after a minute of trying to recall if she’d met them, so there was no harm in introducing herself again if they have met before, right? there were multiple ways she could play it off either way. “hello! i’m haneul.” her eyebrows furrowed immediately after, as she was questioning whether or not she was supposed to use her stage name now. “hana now, i guess? ignore that please.” her mediocre social skills were already starting to show. “if you could have any superpower, which one would you want?” 

“ignore what?” the question came out with a sharper edge than taewoong had intended, but that wasn’t anything new — speaking to people was hard enough for him as is, let alone strangers. for a second, he considered taking her words literally and ignoring her presence in its entirety, walking away before she could start talking again. he waited too long, though, and her conversation starter caught him just off-guard enough that he simply stared at her for a few drawn-out seconds. what the fuck? where had that come from? did he look like he was cosplaying as a superhero or something?

“invisibility, so i could exist without being bothered by random people.” snarky undertones suggested that he was speaking about her, but he tried to keep his expression from giving it away completely. she hadn’t done anything wrong, anyway, and he knew that he shouldn’t take his irritation out on her — still, he couldn’t force a nonexistent friendliness into his tone. “what about you, elektra?”

the open floor plan of taewoong’s new apartment rejects the concept of privacy. he can’t hide the still packed boxes or the week-old takeout cartons, so there’s no use in trying — they mix with the new boxes he keeps throwing to the floor as he pulls the aquarium decorations out of them. a disaster zone, if he’s honest. a stubbed toe or a surprise stumble waiting to happen, but he hasn’t apologized even once for the mess. he just kicks cardboard and plastic out of the way when he needs to, expects yul to catch on and do the same. “i don’t really know what the fuck i’m doing, to be honest,” he admits, gaze flashing towards his old roommate for a fleeting instant. his mouth stretches into a hesitant smile. maybe he should’ve just done this alone.

“i’m no interior designer. ‘specially not one catering to frogs. i wanted toast to have a lot of enrichment, even though he doesn’t even really do much. i got some stuff for the others, too—“ the other residents of this particular habitat group, he means. a betta fish, some ghost shrimp, “but i ended up buying a lot of... bullshit.” there’s no particular theme, either; pop-culture decorations, leaf-beds that suction to the aquarium walls, stone hide-outs, plants. “i don’t have a game plan, so just do whatever, i guess.” he gives a half-hearted shrug as he leans over the side of the 30-gallon tank, pressing one of the smaller hideouts into a barren corner. “thanks for coming, anyway. i’m sure you’re busy with the music show. how’s that going, by the way? is it fun?”

sun in capricorn — poor self-expression, inclination to be uptight, views life itself as a competition. stuck somewhere between not giving a damn about what he does or doesn’t do and wanting to be on top at all times. competitive, which leads to bursts of extreme effort followed by periods of nonchalance.

sore loser. doesn’t matter if he loses in a true competition or in a board game; he’s gonna be a bitch about it.

doesn’t know how to have fun.

ascendant in capricorn — not necessarily self-centered, but definitely self-focused. cares more about making himself succeed than helping others succeed. often said to be “too serious” and, to people who don’t know him, his default expression can even look a bit sad. deep thinker.

moon in aries — deep-rooted feelings of inferiority. always thinks that he needs to prove himself, whether or not he’s actually being evaluated. bragger, show-off, whatever. 

mercury in capricorn — values introspection, but somehow still seems out of touch with himself and with others. lots of deep, serious thoughts, but extremely poor communication skills. rarely says what he’s thinking, and at times, it’s almost like he expects people to read his mind. gets upset when he isn’t understood.

venus in capricorn — very, very cautious in getting close to others, whether romantically or platonically. a fear of betrayal and rejection means that woong would rather spend the rest of his life alone than admit that he’s in love with someone or let someone become his ‘best friend’. privacy, privacy, privacy; it’s one of his biggest values, even though it leads to plenty of loneliness. spontaneous people scare him the most, though he was the same way just a couple years ago.

mars in libra — passive-aggressive. doesn’t have enough self-control to soothe his temper, but lacks the communication skills needed to outright say when he’s bothered. tends to beat around the bush, but even when his point is acknowledged, he’ll be like “no, it’s fine”. eye roll.

no one’s a mind-reader, but you better learn how to read his or he’ll riot!!! (quietly, while saying that everything’s good :))

jupiter in capricorn — focused, serious, self-reliant. “it’ll happen because i have a plan”. doesn’t waste time on useless, time-consuming side-projects. looks at the bigger picture and thinks about what will help him the most in the long run.

doesn’t accept handouts.

saturn in aries — always on guard. sensitive to criticism, likely to lash out when he feels like he’s being attacked/cornered, even if it’s all in his head. feels like he has a lot to prove, so he can be a show-off at times. not above lying to make himself seem better than he is in whatever way necessary.

overall, independent, withdrawn, competitive. a very serious mindset that results in him clashing with most of the people around him because he isn’t spontaneous, he isn’t fun, and he hates to see people living in ways that he doesn’t understand. difficult to understand, difficult to get through to. poor communication skills. “better left alone.”

woong’s relevance within unity and how he feels about it.

woong has jaehyun & jungwoo’s lines, which means he gets a lot of center time and a lot of killing parts in unity’s songs.

he used to not think much about it because he was just happy to be involved, i guess; he didn’t undervalue or overvalue himself, just viewed unity as a fun little group project and all he really had to do was carry his weight.

but as he’s aged, fame his undoubtedly gotten to his head. now he’s a bit arrogant, a bit full of himself, a bit “i don’t even have to lift a finger, i can just stand here and i’ll still be successful”. thinks he’s built different ig

he doesn’t pursue any solo activities outside of unity and turns away from any opportunities that may be presented to him for a few different reasons, mainly because he doesn’t want dimensions to get any more money from him than they already do and he thinks he’s already doing more than enough just by Being Sexy (his words)

his image is meant to be kinda cold and “chic”, the Unattainable Cool Guy, tsundere.... something like that? known best for his on-stage and off-stage smolder. very sharp stare, if he doesn’t like something or want to be somewhere, it shows. resulted in some criticism earlier on, but now fans like it.

i don’t think he pulls in many solo stans, though — he’s interesting at first, but it takes a special kind of person to stay interested once it becomes obvious that he’s not the type who opens up over time, warms up, or shows affection to fans. there’s a very high fence between him and everyone else, impossible to cross.

blunt, smart-ass relationship with his fans. he isn’t mean to them (he knows better), but if he’s doing a livestream and listening to music in the background but a fan requests for him to play something else, he’ll be like “if you’re here to listen to music, just leave and do that on your own. i’ll listen to what i like, okay?”

getting him to do aegyo is impossible. he might’ve done it a couple times when he was a rookie, but now he redirects the requests to the fan who asked, or to other members if he was asked on some kind of interview.

he pushes his luck a lot. while he IS valuable, he overestimates his value within unity and even within the company itself, thinks he can get away with a lot just ‘cause he’s moon taewoong. but on the other hand, he knows that he doesn’t actually have a whole lot to offer in any other field, so he hasn’t quite reached the “i don’t give a single fuck” point yet. keeps himself in line because he needs $$$ money $$$

paychecks keep him motivated. there’s nothing else he cares about within the idol industry, so at this point, the only reason he’s still making an effort to go above and beyond on stage is because he’s materialistic. “i just made a million and i’m still not satisfied” irl

still in the first week of inkigayo’s newest trio of mcs, taewoong finds the time in his overwhelmingly busy—or, as some may say, empty—schedule to stop by. an earlier claim states that his intentions are to give yul a pleasant surprise, but as he circles the same fifty square feet with an expression that reads disinterested, don’t bother, it seems that the biggest surprise will be when the fansite photos of him entering the sbs building do their rounds. as always, he really just cares about the positive attention he can get by piggy-backing off of other unity member’s solo activities instead of having to lift any of his own fingers. if he gives this pretend-searching another twenty minutes, he’ll probably be able to reasonably say that he was too late, couldn’t catch his groupmate in time. what a shame.

karma must be real, though, because yul doesn’t appear in his path, but ma yeonggi does. the first emotion that taewoong feels is everyday annoyance; the same thing associated with the misfortune of stepping on a fresh piece of gum. but then it suddenly catches fire, turns into anger. in these situations, it usually does, and he lacks the self-control to keep himself quiet. “congratulations on your new gig,” he starts, half-smiling — a contradictory sign that despite his almost polite tone, there’s no friendliness to be found here. he slows his pace, then comes to a halt in front of yeonggi; even side-steps a little to cut him off in his path. “seems like you’re everywhere these days. good for you, but doesn’t bc know that there’s not much charm in the jack of all trades, master of none?”

punch is the lead single from unity zone: the final round, released in november of 2020. taewoong would be a liar if he claimed to have any fucking idea what the song is about, but this far into unity’s career, he’s given up on asking. if he understands, great ― if he doesn’t, it’s nothing new. as hesitant as woong is to admit when he likes something, he oddly enjoyed promotions for punch. he found it to be an ~exciting headache~, rather than just a headache, which is enough to rank it pretty high in his favorite comebacks so far.

does taewoong actually care about champion? the answer is a resounding no — he’d thought that the idea was absolutely ridiculous the first time that he’d caught wind of it, and he still thinks that it’s ridiculous now. just another way to bring money in, he’s sure, but is a song with a title like ‘jopping’ really going to bring in money? (he knows it will. of course it will. the cynical side of him wishes that it wouldn’t.)

still, he’s here; sitting in a waiting room labeled champion, pretending to be a nice, supportive surprise. really, he just wanted a photo-op of him entering the building so that fans would stop talking about how he’s become so distant from his members lately, he must not care anymore. could’ve snuck back out after that, maybe, but there’s nothing else for him to do and maybe a couple selfies with jaewon, yul or guanting in their stage outfits will make him look even better. staring at the television in the waiting room, he just feels dull.

“you know,” he suddenly starts, finally addressing the other idol in the room — taejin. though he doesn’t consider himself a fan of decipher by any means, he figures it’s impossible to not recognize taejin nowadays. he’s everywhere, isn’t he? now he’s here, a few feet away. small world. “when i was little, i never imagined that music like this existed. i’m from a rural area, so it’s not like i left my house and saw advertisements everywhere, you know? and music just wasn’t a big part of my life at all. i took a music class, but doesn’t every kid? we didn’t learn about pop culture.” he’s rambling, and he doubts that taejin even cares about what he has to say. but he’s on a roll now, so he can’t stop. won’t be able to ‘til he’s inevitably overshared, assuming he hasn’t already.

“i’m not even kidding. when i was little, i thought music was just the traditional stuff, classical stuff. unity’s been active for four years and i’m still shocked every time i hear our music. and this... jopping?” he laughs under his breath, but it’s more disbelief than actual humor. he looks away from the screen to look at taejin, see if he’s even listening. if the roles were reversed, he knows he would’ve zoned out five words in. “do you know what i mean? probably not, huh? you’ve been active for a while.”

headcanon 1.

all current unity title tracks as ranked by moon taewoong.

boss.  musically-speaking, woong thinks that boss is unity’s best title track. he was pretty shocked the first time he heard the instrumental, was not at all expecting to hear a unity song that didn’t immediately make his head hurt. while the sound is still kind of ~experimental~, he genuinely thinks that it works??? this is probably the era where he looked the most comfortable on stage because he didn’t entirely hate the song he was performing.

kick it.  kick it is a guilty pleasure. woong hates to admit that he likes it, but he..... really does. he thinks it’s a fun song (he still knows how to have fun??? wow!) and while it’s kind of tiring to perform, he wasn’t mad about having to perform it. he thought the stage stylings were cool, too, but that’s another thing he won’t admit.

punch.  again, woong doesn’t like admitting that he enjoys this song, but he does. tries to blame it on the fact that he’s getting SO used to unity’s messy songs that they simply don’t strike him as bizarre anymore because god forbid he ever admits that he still enjoys things sometimes. as much shit as he talks about unity’s music, he’s more of a performance-focused person anyway and he thinks that punch was just..... cool.

regular.  woong liked regular, but by the time that it was released, he had fallen deep into his “money above everything else” mindset and his paranoid ass thought that it was a call-out, so he acted uninterested. “damn, could never be me” type beat. but by the end of promotions, he had loosened up a little and was having fun with it.

the 7th sense.  if taewoong knew what was ahead of him, he would’ve appreciated the 7th sense so much more. he thought it was kind of outside the box for a debut song, was kind of bitchy during promotions because he was in physical pain from not knowing what tf to do about the injuries he was hiding atm, was reported to look “bored” or “angry” on stage. the 7th sense.... come back to him. he’ll treat u better this time <3

limitless.  something about limitless feels inexplicably eerie to woong. he’s tried to talk about it before and his fans just told him to shut tf up (fair enough), but the feeling is still there??? you might think it would make him not like limitless, but it’s the opposite. he thinks it’s kind of interesting, wouldn’t mind dropping another song like it.

firetruck.  firetruck felt (and still feels) like a fever dream to taewoong. the first time he heard it, he absolutely hated it. the second time, he hated it even more. even by the time recording was done, it was released and they were promoting it, he! still! hated! it! but... then he watched the comments slowly go from saying “this made my ears bleed” to “wait, this is kinda good though?” over the course of a few weeks, then a few months. ended up becoming begrudgingly fond of firetruck as he watched others warm up to it. 

without you.  as someone who complains about unity’s experimental sound so much, you’d think that their one relatively normal-sounding title track would be higher up in the list. however, woong’s really particular/picky about music (shocker!) and this song reminds him a lot of one direction. he’s not about that.

touch.  he doesn’t really have any actual issues with touch, it’s just that the concept didn’t fit his assigned image at all and he didn’t like reading comments about how ~it’s nice to see him lighten up for once~ or, alternatively, ~woong doesn’t suit this~. felt awkward promoting touch, so it can kiss his ass. goodbye.

cherry bomb.  woong doesn’t like anything about cherry bomb and can’t even be bothered to pretend like he does. it’s not his least favorite, he just thinks that it??? sucks??? when he read comments clowning the “if you’re happy and you know it, clap your hands!” part, he couldn’t even blame them. he thinks it’s dumb, too.

simon says.  all that woong has to say about this song is what the fuck? he actually thought that it was okay the first couple of times he heard it, but by the end of promotions, he started to think that it sounds an awful lot like radio static and random stations bleeding together ‘cause the signal’s bad. 

superhuman.  honestly, woong doesn’t think that superhuman is unity’s worst song. the reason that he claims that it’s his least favorite is because he’s super petty and he doesn’t like superheroes, so the concept was really dumb/unappealing to him. he still wouldn’t like the song very much if the concept was something different, though.

𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞'𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐩 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐞,  but jinsol ultimately decides he does not actually need to apologize; he unintentionally twisted words taewoong’s words if that’s the case, but regardless! the bookstore. “okay, yes, i do want to go there…” he trails off, wondering if the idea of new electronics is that unappealing for the other, before deciding to go on with it and have the both of them heading in a backtracked direction.

“my question is, what are you going to spend your money on? i guess that isn’t my business,” except for the fact that he was making it his business right now by prying.  “but… curious. and they gave us money to spend, not save and hoard. i think.” were there conditions with the money given to them under the relaxation card? in his haste with the joy of pulling this card versus the others, jinsol had been less prudent than usual in paying attention to the instructions.

sometimes bookstores can be treasure havens or the same boring things, so he hopes that a store in such a popular area as this will not disappoint. the door opens with a jingle and he glances back at woong before moving forth to take a deep breath. the silence inside is such a contrast to the busyness of the streets past the glass doors. “the ambience. i. love. bookstores.” granted he can’t read the script here, and it’s starting to make him feel uneasy. “though i feel like an outcast here,’ since it’s no surprise, that nearly everything is in mandarin chinese. “um… i don’t know if i’ll get much shopping done here to be honest,” he says slowly as he flips through one of the books, the colours more comforting than anything. “but thanks for joining me here anyway, woong-ah.” 

“books, obviously. we’ll look really smart if we both spend all our money on books ― and not only smart. we’ll look ambitious, too, for buying them in a language that we don’t know yet.” not that taewoong really cares how they look. both he and jinsol are on the quieter side, and something tells him that the two of them browsing a bookstore will be deemed too boring to air on a reality show with so many different idols doing their own things. he doesn’t know about jinsol, but he can confidently say that he hasn’t done anything worth being aired at all so far. (it’s kind of intentional, though; a stubborn rebellion against his life being broadcasted when he should be cozy at home.)

it’s been a while since he’s stepped into a bookstore, so it’s difficult for him to adjust. there’s a brief moment when it almost feels like he’s stepped back in time and the feeling disorients him, but he’s quick to snap back to reality. “aren’t we outcasts everywhere?” he asks. on the surface, it seems like nothing more than an allusion to their career choice. if you look deeper, it’s really in reference to their introverted natures. “that’s just part of it. i don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to get any shopping done.” it’s protective, almost, the way he’s so quick to pull his phone out and load google translate ― a split-second realization that likely wouldn’t have crossed his mind if he’d come alone.

“if there’s something you really want to understand, we can take a picture and put it through google translate. i know it’s not perfect, but it’s better than it used to be. i use it all the time when unity’s on tour,” he informs, though for now, he chooses to rely on common sense to get a general idea for where different genres might be located. at the moment, dictionaries are on his mind. “first, let’s find some mandarin to korean dictionaries and see if there are any, uh... beginner’s lesson books or whatever. maybe look at the little kids’ books, too? after that... i don’t know, think of your favorite books or whatever. we can see if there are mandarin editions here. i don’t read, but i’ll help you look.”
