okay okay so. so. 1) this is gonna be trans mtf emily and not nonbinary just bc i’m like off the shits rn, and 2) this is all going fucking au i don’t care about canon
but like when emily comes to the team after doyle she’s determined to not get close to anyone and to not let anyone know, she got all the paperwork sorted out anyways so no one will ever find out -- unless she’s in a medical emergency, but she’ll take it as it comes.

long story short emily falls for jj and jj falls for emily and they’re really fucking soft but emily doesn’t come out to her until a few dates in where emily gathers herself together one night and is all “jayje, i’m trans.”
and jj is like “cool!”
and she’s just sitting there and smiling a bit awkwardly and emily squints at her until she finally admits she doesn’t know what that means, and emily is like oh god okay so she does her best to communicate it as directly as possible (i have a guy’s body but i’m a girl) and she’s doing her best to not be too emotional but jj is just all okay! :) and they talk a bit more, with jj asking some questions and emily answering them but at the end of the night they cuddle and jj is curled up on emily’s chest like always and she murmurs out one drowzy “love you emmy” like she always does and emily is so. so. soft.
jj spends the next few weeks doing more research-- in general she’s very open-minded considering she’s from fucking rural pennsylvania, she’s just never heard of this stuff (hell she didn’t even know the straight-gay binary was bullshit until penelope introduced her to bisexuality), but she loves her emily so so much and she loves her trans identity bc that’s part of her as well
their relationship afterwards is a lot of communication! jj learning more and more about the trans community and emily becoming more and more sure of herself. when she comes out to the team, it’s one by one and on her own terms, and jj is always there to support her girlfriend (and later wife)
