We know that videogames can be highly addictive, and can even have tragic consequences, but the case of a woman in England is perplexing in that she is not a marginalized teenager, but a middle-aged woman who stole from her own disabled mother so that she could play Candy Crush.
According to The Telegraph, 45-year-old Sally-Anne Turner of Chelmsford, England stole more than £1000, or approximately $1700, from her mother so that she could buy extra lives and boosters to help her clear levels in the highly addictive game. Turner was able to so because she was acting as her mother’s carer and had access to her bank account. It wasn’t until her mother noticed that a sum of almost $2000 went missing during a period of time that coincided with her daughter’s addiction to Candy Crush that she became suspicious of her.
Turner has admitted a charge of “fraud while occupying a position of trust” and has been sentenced to 12 weeks incarceration, a year of being “suspended” (which we assume is probation) and will be on a curfew of three months with no TV and no sweets even if she finishes her veggies at dinner.
