♋ Papa Danma with Tsunade

Tsunade’s mother is a character I’ve battled with for years, but what never really changes is that I HC her as having been a (non shinobi) mercenary who Danma met in the Land of Stone and had a brief whirlwind romance with but never married and didn’t have a part in raising Tsunade. Early on she died, but in more recent days I’m leaning more towards her not being quite as keen on being a mother as Danma was to being a father and gave him the opportunity to take the baby if he wanted it.

She carried her, gave birth to her, made everyone question if Danma was actually the father by pushing the genetics of all of his physical traits aside, but did not raise her.

The woman Danma later married, Kaede, ended up being much more of an actual mother to Tsunade (and the birth mother of Nawaki).

How is Danma and Tsunade's relationship in the real timeline?

It's alright! If Danma were to die around the time Nawaki was born in the true timeline as well, he would have been around until Tsunade was about 11, giving him roughly five years more with her than in the main verse. Like in the main verse his frequent missions that takes him away from the village does put a strain on it a bit, and he does very much disapprove of her idolization of Hashirama and later her sensei.

Hashirama knows that Danma doesn't want him to pass on his enthusiasm for gambling to Tsunade, because Danma had told him so many many times as he saw it as a problematic trait not to be encouraged, but he does it anyway because he saw it as bonding and Tsunade thought it a lot of fun. His father's disregard for Danma's wishes only adds to the resentment and when he's home he actively tries to keep them separated. Kaname is more on Danma's side and tends to stand in for him when she can if Danma's not around, Mito wants to find a middel grund.

He still adores her, seeing her as the greatest thing in his life, and wants to have a close relationship with her and make sure she's happy. And she does love him and miss him when he's gone. But that idolization of two people he doesn't actually want her to be around much definitely comes in the way at times.

True Timeline!Danma makes it absolutely no secret how much he deeply disapproves of Hiruzen as Tsunade's teacher. He was genuinely livid when he found out and barely held it together in front of her.

He couldn't do much, but he stayed just as mad and disapproving of it, and it only got worse as he became familiar with the personalities of her teammates.

Also realized just now that the age gap of 12yrs between Danma and Kichiro is about the same as the gap of 11yrs between Tsunade and Nawaki.

Kichiro and Tsunade are the closest in age with six years between them

What do you imagine Tsunade would have been like as leader of the Senju clan, if the clan was still intact in Konoha?

Suppose it might depend on how much of her trauma will effect her ability to lead them. If she still ends up with her addictions to gambling and drinking and leaves the village, she wouldn't be much of a leader.

Though she is clearly capable of being a leader, so if life was kinder to her I could see her in the role of clan head and doing very well with it.

Hello!

In one of your poems, Danma didn't live long and Tsunade was born to him. In the other, in the era of the Warring states, is he alive? Did he meet Tsunade's mother?

You're right, in my main timeline Danma becomes a father young, barely 19, and dies at roughly 22 years old, just a few months before Nawaki's birth. This being said, Danma only really has Tsunade at the age he does because it's the only way I can make the timeline make sense. He either has his first child young, or Hashirama barely gets to see Tsunade out of her infancy much less have the time to pass on a gambling addiction to her before he dies. As for my Warring States verse, I typically keep Tsunade out of the picture by default. Danma is alive, he's doing his thing, but he have not had Tsunade. I am sort of playing with the idea of him having met Tsunade's mother, but she haven't gotten pregnant yet. But I have not decided yet. Although, depending on the setup for a thread, Tsunade can be added to the mix.

Hi hello just me thinking about Kaname talking and playing and cooing at baby Tsunade

“I promise that you will grow up strong and clever and beautiful.”

“You’ll do and accomplish amazing things and you will get all the recognition you deserve , you’ll be admired by so many people. Yes you will, I’m sure of it. “

“You’ll be happy and your family will be so proud of you.”

She looks genuinely very happy while holding her and rocking her and assuring her that she’ll have her back as she grows up.

But sometimes she’ll cry.

Sometimes because she mourns the role of mother to a child of her own that she’ll never have. And sometimes because she finds herself promising Tsunade the things she herself have wanted her whole life, and is struck by the fear that since she’s never, in her mind, been able to obtain those things how can she provide them to her?
