Sleep (Spy!Babies)

He’d always read about how eerily quiet hospitals were supposed to be, about how they supposedly smelt of industrial strength bleach and latex and about how white that were. It sounded like something straight out of a horror movie, ready for fear and tragedy to strike at the most unexpected second.

Well, the base’s medical wing has always been immaculately spotless and there was the distinct smell of cleanser in the air, those facts were undeniable. But it wasn’t quiet like he’d always heard claimed. Not by any stretch of the imagination, even if he did ignore the loud noises that had filled the entire base since the early evening. For the past two days that he’d sat there, he had been all but deafened by the sound of the beeping heart monitor and by his own blood pounding loudly in his ears, the only relief coming in the form of Sebastian’s own — albeit uneven and strained — breathing.

The flowers that Grace had brought over a few days prior had already started to wilt. No doubt she’d be over with a fresh bundle in the morning with whatever breakfast she managed to sneak from the mess hall. Hunter did have to admit, her joining him for breakfast did help keep him from completely losing his mind, but he still refused to move from the bedside, not wanting to miss the second Sebastian finally woke up. The medics said they were mostly out of the danger zone, but ‘mostly’ may as well have been an outright no for all the peace it brought him. There was always the possibility, no matter how slight, that Sebastian could…

No. That was a train of thought he refused to allow, digging his fingernails into his palms to keep from continuing. The dull, fleeting pain it brought snapped him back to reality. And right now, the reality was that Sebastian was alive. He was safe. He was with Hunter, and if it meant he’d have to go straight into Hell and pull Sebastian out of the hands of death itself to keep him that way, then that was precisely what Hunter would do.

The two furry brats were sound asleep, Chas curled into Sebastian’s side as always while Clarence made his home at the foot of his bed. They weren’t breathing loud enough to drown the sound of all the machines, but it was still calming enough for Hunter to let himself close his eyes. There were already the sounds of celebration echoing through the headquarters, most of which, no doubt, were rooted in alcohol. Maybe if Sebastian hadn’t been so goddamm self-sacrificing, they would be out celebrating with the rest of the team. No liquor for them - Hunter was sick to his stomach thinking back to the story Sebastian had told him right before the mission had gone to hell, the reason why Hunter had never seen him drunk until it was almost too late.

No, they wouldn’t be drinking if they were out with everybody else, but maybe they would get caught up in all the bright excitement enough to dance with the pulsating music that could be heard all the way in the medical wing. And maybe at the strike of midnight, Hunter would wrap his arm around Sebastian’s waist to tug him close. And maybe Sebastian’s hands would be on Hunter’s back, and they would kiss in the most cliché way imaginable without a care in the world, too inebriated from the brightness and the celebration to pay much mind to people and proprietary. And Sebastian would tug Hunter back to his -their- quarters and they would press into the sheets, moving together with fumbling mouths and needy hands and, for a few moments, they would stop pretending that this was just casual fucking. They wouldn’t ignore their hands laced together or the languid strokes along each others bodies, how their breathy moans sounded more like a prayer than any half-assed attempt at redemption that Hunter had to listen to every Sunday of his godforsaken childhood.

Next year though. If… when, dammit, when Sebastian opened his eyes, Hunter would promise their next New Year’s Eve would be enough to make up for not only this one, but the previous twenty-four that they’d been unable to spend together. All Sebastian had to do was wake up, look at Hunter with those bright eyes that had been far too muted the last time they’d made contact with another, and listen to Hunter’s promise that he would never be hurt again.

It was only thanks to the clamoring noise coming from the mess hall that alerted Hunter that midnight must have finally hit. There was the sound of cheering and those obnoxious fucking noise makers that would most likely be left throughout the entire base until the next morning. Hunter sighed, glancing at the infirmary’s entrance for a quick second before his attention was back on the still form in front of him. Placing a hand on the thick quilt he’d had Grace bring from Sebastian’s rooms, Hunter pushed himself up just enough for him to hover over the too-thin man, leaning forward and pressing a kiss against Sebastian’s dry, lips. His free hand came to rest on top of Sebastian’s, his skin cold despite the heavy blankets he’d been buried under since he’d come home, letting his thumb stroke a line that he hoped could be felt even in his unconscious state.

“Happy New Year, Sebastian.”
