this months evaluation was one that feel right in line with what doyum was use to in life. having spent a good two years before even becoming a trainee by busking, hearing that they were going to be busking this month filled him with so much confidence. he half wished he could post something about it so his fans would know that he is going to be busking especially since it’s been so long since they have seen him, though he supposes he could always make a post on the official orion post about something vague. 

regardless, he was going to be back in one of his old stomping grounds. sinchon was a place he had busked before and it will be so nice being able to go back there and busk again. “hey hyung, do you think they’ll let us do any solo dances? during the eval i mean.” he questioned the older as the two of them stretched for dance practice. the teen having found himself seated near jongsuk and was taking the time to bother his hyung now. “i learned a new girl group dance recently... it would be fun to get to show it off.”

New Faces, Familiar Tongues

 Sicheng very often spends the second half of his lunch hour on the phone with Xuxi, picking as private a corner as he can find to blabber to him in whichever mix of English or Mandarin felt most natural that particular day, generally giving him the benefit of not being easily understood by most of the people in TRC either way. 

 Today, Sicheng and him first discuss Xuxi’s puppy and her growing tendency towards incontinence, and then Sicheng nags him a bit to clean out his fridge; Xuxi’s apartment is the worst sort of bachelor pad, little furniture, and not much in the way of decor, but it’s the agéd condiments in the rear of the fridge that bother Sicheng the most. 

 He’s only vaguely aware of the glances that the other boy in the diner keeps sending his way, brushing them off until a couple of minutes after he’s hung up on Xuxi, when the mysterious boy approaches, asking rather timidly if Sicheng spoke Mandarin. 

 It takes Sicheng a second to place the kid, always forgetting that as an entertainment company, TRC did tend to take on new trainees every once in a while, but he offers him a meek smile once he does.

 “Uh...yeah,” he says with a bit of a chuckle, trying not to come off as stiff, however bad he was at it, “I’m...Chinese. You’re...the Triple Threat kid, right? Um...congratulations!”

dinner at the trc building is always favourable to anything else for ten, that is if he has time for it. sometimes he uses the extra time to get more practise in, usually on the days when he can’t perfect some dance moves and it’s bothering him. though today he finds himself feeling secure in the practise he’s already got in during the day, and allows himself the time to sit down and consume something, since he’d skipped lunch, and only drunk a large americano for breakfast. 

holding onto his tray laden with his dinner his eyes sweep over the tables dotted around the canteen. he can either sit alone, or try and sit with one of the other people in the canteen. finally deciding on a table at which a tall, slender girl with bright red hair sits. making his way over he stops beside the table, hoping to catch her attention. 

“uh, do you mind if i sit with you?”

tall worries

it’s early in the morning, as it always is at the beginning of a long day of training, and doyum was still struggling to get his eyes opened this morning. the teen looking a bit more worse for wear today in a black hoodie and sweats, he hadn’t even taken time to do his hair which was odd for mister fashion conscious doyum. but considering what had happened this time last year, and the fact he was having some trouble sleeping these days, doyum decided it would be fine to let his look slip. it’s not as if he’s popular or famous, so he wouldn’t show up in a paper with an embarrassing photo. 

thus he was making his way into the trc building with is hood pulled up, hands half hidden in the sleeves of the over sized hoodie, and a yawn spilling past his lips every few minutes no matter how he tried to stop it. thanks to this, he almost missed the figure of one of his hyungs walking ahead of him. the teen squinting behind his glasses ( the lazy day had also meant no contacts ) to see who it was and making a soft oh face when he registered the tall figure. sleep, and kind of clingy, doyum picked up his pace to match with chanyeol before slipping one hand around the olders. “morning hyung.” he mutters quietly, his voice scratchy. and his head tilts as he turn his gaze upwards onto the older.

now, he knows their height difference isn’t really that of him standing beside namsan tower, but sometimes doyum really does feel like standing beside chanyeol is how it feels to be beside the tower. seoul tower, namsan tower, maybe even the space needle in the usa too. the older is just so tall. and doyum is... not. 

“do you eat a lot of trees or something to get that tall?” he blurts before he can stop himself, his tired mind not catching up to itself or his mouth which let words just run wild. the teen ears going red as he blushed, embarrassed. yet also not backing up from the odd question. as he really did wonder some days if chanyeol was just munching down giant ass trees and thus his height shot up to that of a giant ass tree. “....i mean..... you’re just so tall, hyung........... i wanna be like you.”

event: july evaluation location: outside yongsan electronics market date: july 30th // 1:30pm

if ten had any eggs he’s sure he’d be able to fry some on the side of the road with how hot it was. it reminds him of home, back where almost every single day was scorching and the city was always lit by the bright sunlight. the problem isn’t exactly the heat, he doesn’t mind warm weather, but it’s the humidity that really annoys him. it’s like trying to dance in a sauna. the baseball cap he’d been smart enough to bring with him turned out to be incredibly useful, shielding his eyes from the harsh light that bathed the entire stage and all the small tents in a bright yellow-orange glow.

but standing on stage he’s still just slightly blinded by the light, though as he finds his position to start the dance he’s already gone through multiple times that day already. though he loves dancing, his stamina isn’t the absolute best, and though he’s still got energy left in him he knows by the end of the day he’s going to be completely drained.  

the music to ‘RINGA LINGA’ starts and ten, for the third time already steps easily into the memorised moves for the dance. he puts just slightly less energy into it than he usually does; to pace himself. if he went right into the dances with the same energy he does for most other times he performs he’d be burnt out by 3pm. the audience made up of some purposefully visiting the stage to see the trainees perform, and pedestrians who’d stopped briefly to watch one single stage, watch the boys as they weave between each other and move their bodies to the music.

ten let’s himself pay more attention to who’s in the audience than he usually would, less of his focus needed for the dance which has already been imprinted into his muscle memory over the past month, and smiles when he sees some sopa students he vaguely remembers from the times he’d stop to chat to those in the years below him. many of the audience members are teens, or young adults, and ten understands why – adults rarely have time for music, their jobs pretty much ruling their lives; ten swears he won’t ever be one of those boring adults – music runs in his blood, and he’s going to dance until he dies.

` formalities .

ten wasn’t exactly prepared for how attractive all the other trainees would be, though he thinks he probably should have been as usually trainees are generally on the more attractive side (ten wonders if people see him as attractive too). but, it seems, none surpass lee jongsuk. he’s tall, has plump lips and strong eyebrows that don’t overpower his soft features, and ten wonders how this man isn’t a super model by now.

the first time he introduces himself to the far taller male he bows a full ninety degrees and addresses him as sunbae, and though it’s not usual for ten to keep formalities in mind, usually pushing boundaries and trying to charm his way into favour with a lot of ‘hyung’s’ and ‘noona’s’. a few weeks in and he’s still calling jongsuk ‘sunbae’, even though he dearly wants to move past that and address him as hyung at least. so as ten sits on the floor of the practise room, chugging water from his water bottle, he watches jongsuk, before speaking directly to him, which he’s not done a lot before. “jongsuk sunbae, can i ask you about yourself?” he wants to learn more about him if he’s going to be training with him for the foreseeable future.

another month, another evaluation. 

seongmin didn’t understand when his classmates who were already trainee’s would complain about training being the same thing all the time. he didn’t get it even after his first few months. but now? at his one year of being a trc trainee? he’s kind of getting it. 

the teen could kind of see what they were getting at because even though each evaluation has been a different task it’s still the same concept. and maybe that’s just a set up to a punch line that seongmin can’t quite understand yet. maybe it’s just proof that the idol life style isn’t as great as people want to believe. the same thing day in and day out while having to please people who will never really think you’re worth anything.

but then again seongmin supposes he also already knew this from his cousin. 

not that it matters all that much, the teen knows this is the path he wants to take. and as he sets up with his team for their performance. he knows he wants to debut one day and to really stand on stage. to perform music made for him, or even by him. 

he doesn’t feel like it’s the same exhausting thing every month because he enjoys it. which is also why he won’t be bothered if they win or lose, because he knows he has so much more to learn still and the sheer fact he has the chance to prove himself like this. to work and learn and achieve the path he’s always dreamed of. 

well. this really is just another step towards his future. 

rapping comes easily to him. the song has been run through his head since the beginning of the month and even if he wasn’t already comfortable with rapping he knew he would be fine. honestly, seongmin wonders if these evaluations should be two week bases or something just because a month is so easy to prepare a single song. not that he’s really complaining. 

and he will admit to himself that he has enjoyed working with this group. so different from when he normally teams up with dongmin or seungjoon. but chanyeol is someone he has worked with before and it was nice getting to know the others. 

he just hopes the coaches can see how much work they’ve put in.
