Fuck! The word roared through her brain as a face flashed in front of her. Her body reacted before her mind actually caught up and processed what it had seen. Sam was just lucky she had been coming round the corner and so could still duck back. Peeking back around, she wanted to see if the blast from the past was still there, or if she had overreacted to a doppleganger.
Nope. Still him. Of all the rotten luck!
Sam leaned against the outer wall of the building, cursing inwardly. Her hands balled up in fists and she was shaking. if her heart still beat, it would be going a mile a minute right now. Hollow Grove had been her escape, her safe haven. She had been turned against her will and had run away here to figure out what it meant to be a vampire. And how to cope. Staying in Chicago had not been an option. She couldn’t place everyone she had ever known in that kind of danger. So Sam had run with no word, just a note. And she hadn’t been back.
She knew it was unfair to her family, but it was the only thing she could think to do. Her brothers and father were police officers, her mother a nurse. They had all seen it all. But no one had ever brought up anything supernatural. No one knew that monsters like Sam now was existed.
Looking around the corner again, Sam took in Lee. He had been her older brother, Jackson’s partner, and she had known him well...once. He was just another person she had had to leave behind in the wake of her being turned. “What the hell is he doing here?” Sam whispered to herself angrily. She knew her family was probably mad at her, and they had every right to be. She wanted so badly to hear how they were doing, but she also didn’t. And she definitely didn’t want them to know she was here.
