I want to know more about Black Wings 👀👀
It vibes with when a friend was thinking a bit about a story with a human trying to survive in an alien planet, and my immediate question was "what about the lives that already existed there? Are they really monsters or is that just the pov of the protagonist?"
Which is my way to say it sounds like a story I would buy front row seats for 👀
It is my favorite WIP at the moment, so THANK YOU for asking about it. YAY!
Yeah, the politics and worldbuilding here are complicated. Basically, humans have colonized space, and there are various factions. One of those factions, named Heritage, is ridiculously rich, they live for, like, thousands of years each individual, and they dwell solely in spaceships.
But. Thing is, they “provide worlds” for other humans to live on. They take a planet, terraform it, meanwhile collecting people from already existing planets. Those people pay them in various goods and treasures, for a chance at life in better conditions. The Heritage transports them, in stasis or hibernation, to newly terraformed planets.
Terraforming, however, isn’t really sustainable. Planets can be homes to the newcomers for, well, maybe ten generations? That’s like five hundred years? I don’t know, I didn’t do the math. It’s a short time for sure and as a result – Heritage has new customers! Yay for Heritage (not).
Anyway. As with any kind of oppressive system, people figured out ways around it. Angerona was a spaceship, in which people who didn’t have enough resources to pay Heritage, escaped non-survivable conditions on their world. They had illegally obtained information about a world under terraforming. And they illegally settled there, before terraforming was completed.
The problem is, terraforming wasn’t just not-completed. It was deliberately sabotaged.
Now. Some sixty years after settling on the planet, the descendants of original inhabitants discover there is life outside of terraformed zones. This life is most likely intelligent (no, they are not monsters, although they kind of look like they are ;) ). And on top of that, the Heritage’s Seed Ship enters orbit and their authorities demand Angerona people relinquish their meek installations and leave the planet.
I have the whole plotline prepared for this story, and I’m going to write it this year, during NaNo. I hope you’ll keep me company! :)
