ok but whales are SUCH linguistically/verbally intelligent creatures that I’m sort of shocked this is the first time one has learned or parroted (but honestly, probably truly learned bc of the context and intelligence) human speech?
Like, different whale pods have different accents to each other and different “slang” or speech patterns that are still recognizable across their species even though they’re noticeably different!
They LIE to each other!
They transmit knowledge through vocalization speech!
Like! whales HAVE BEEN speaking since the beginning it’s just not Our Speaking but like!!!
IT’S JUST BEEN A MATTER OF TIME and that’s why Whales Are Terrifying but also wonderful but also??
I wonder if something with this particular whale is either deformed or evolved in shape in its palate to be able to approximate human speech?
because their palate structure is soooo different from humans’ that like, there’s a reason we can’t mimic whalesong either?
and i wonder if it is significant that it’s a toothed and somewhat beaked whale and not like, an orca with a rounder mouth
because they’re generally kept in captivity (boooo) way longer than seven years and are just as intelligent?
anyway, you take me to the shedd and park me in front of the belugas and i will just cry there until you decide to stop exploring the city and come get me. my parents have done that.
