Hey guys! This post is super important! I want to take a minute to explain that 야 does not simply mean “hey.” I have seen countless tumblr posts and other sources translate 야 to “hey.” And, they aren’t exactly wrong, but there is no contextual understanding of this word’s usage. And that’s that most of the time, this is not a friendly word. It’s really aggressive and would probably be better translated as a “hey, wtf” kind of feeling. It isn’t a greeting and should really be used with the closest of friends because you could really hurt or surprise someone by using it wrong. And, I’m speaking from experience. I learned this the hard way. So, here are some examples.

야 너 미쳤어? Yo wft, are you crazy?

야 너 왜 그랬어? Hey what the hell. Why did you do that?

야 죽을래? Wtf you wanna die?

야! 내 카톡 왜 씹어!? Hey! Why are you ignoring my messages?

Once, you’re close to your friends, you can use it in a less aggressive and more positive way. But, you have to say it longer and in a lower tone. Tone of voice is really important. Kind of like yooooo~ Here are some examples.

야아아~ 덥지 ㅠㅠㅠ yoooo it’s so hot.

야아아아~ 남자 친구 생겼다면서? Yoooo, I heard you got a boyfriend?

야아 오늘 나 잘 하지 않았나? Yo~ didn’t I do a good job today?

야아아! 저 사람 봤어?? Yooo did you see that person?

So, when is this word appropriate? It definitely depends on the person and relationship. But, I honestly wouldn’t suggest using it. It’s great to know and understand, but this word could really hurt someone’s feelings when used wrong. Personally, I never use it. I have two friends who use it with each other, but they’re kind of rough and tough types who swear like sailors and have been best friends since middle school. Sometimes, I do use the second version though that’s used in a low tone for positive situations.
