“did you see a car here, earlier, i - don’t tell me it got towed.”
it’s been quiet, recently. while it hasn’t exactly been peaceful since the government started the reforms, these least few days have been devoid of drama and special events. even the newly arrived convicts seem to be of the mellower type; none have tried to escape in a while, at least. maybe some god out there, some sadistic deity, was bored out of their mind and decided that it’d be fun if something… explosive happened.
or maybe it was chuutarou.
whatever the cause was, these are the facts. after breakfast, ten-nii was called into town to take care of some important business that chutarou didn’t really understood. sora-nii went inside a few hours later to do some housecleaning for the coming of summer; shiro-nii, having been banned from cooking for as long as chuutarou could remember, had gone in to help sora-nii with one errand or another. and in the midst of this all, the youngest resident of the kumo house thought it would be a fine idea to go off and practice in his own, fully confident that he would be fine and that there wasn’t a need to disturb the rest of their small family just to watch over him.
this ended up being a very faulty judgement, he later found out, when one of the miniarure explosives he was practicing with was accidentally ignited right besides a small pile of mines he’d put aside for later. the following blast, while not large, was still terrifying to the twelve year old child, who was standing relatively close to the explosion. neither blast nor scream were quiet.
// @vesselborne did not ask for this but they’re getting it AnYWAy
he’d been alone in the woods surrounding his family shrine, going from tree to tree without direction or destination when he saw it. if asked, chuutarou would claim he’d been practicing at the time, who would believe that?
the strange sight of a great, white tiger in the middle of the woods immediately had him halting in- in well, whatever he was doing alone in the woods, far from the shrine and any paths. he’d never seen one before; the only experience he’d had with any, were pictures in the school’s new books or in art– and none had such vibrant markings so far as he knew, in real life or in those stories.
uneasily, he shuffles closer to the tree’s trunk, eyes never leaving the animal’s form. he thinks, vaguely, that he should tell his brothers as soon as possible, but fear and curiousity leave him rooted in his spot.

why does it have to be so hot today?
chuutarou’s about to melt, he’s sure of it. it’s too hot to go outside and its too hot to move so he’s just going to lay there on the porch and let his bones melt into a big giant chuutarou puddle and the sora-nii’s going to get really mad and ten-nii’s gonna probably laugh at him again but he doesn’t care because its probably a thousand degrees outside or something and he’s melting, okay?

「 sir? you shouldn’t be here right now! the road to the village is over there- are you lost?」
there’s a child calling out to the stranger from up above. he’s noticeably flustered, waving up at him from the branch of a nearby tree. more and more convicts have attempted to flee their sentence ever since his eldest brother, ten-nii, had been confined to his wheelchair; he and sora-nii, his other older brother, tried their best to take over his role, but they were far from the eldest’s level of skill and it took them longer and a lot more effort to catch half the fugitives their brother did.
while chuutarou was confident in his and sora-nii’s skills, he still didn’t want anyone to get hurt, and it’s always better to be safe than sorry. that’s what sora-nii always said!

「 are you lost, sir? i can help guide you to wherever you’re going if you want! I know where everything is here, so you can trust me. promise! 」
while not exactly wrong, chuutarou wasn’t being entirely truthful either. he didn’t know where exactly everything is, like all the roads in the shiga prefecture or who lived in every house and where to find them-- but he did know just enough to about guess where they could be, and that’s nearly the same thing anyway!
