you know - just think for a moment if el decides to reveal to the hawkins crew exactly what why she got arrested in the first place and open up more about angela and her bullying -

and at first, hearing this, steve’s immediate reaction is anger and outrage and protectiveness because how dare she do that to el, how dare anyone do anything like that to any of these kids -

but then the more el shares about the things angela said and did - slowly disgust, regret, shame, start to unfurl within him and start to become part of those emotions as he remembers that once upon a time he had been like angela. just like angela. and the hurt el felt, the hurt that makes him wanna wrap her in a blanket and protect her from the world, is the same hurt he caused for other people

and that self hatred that runs within him grows maybe just a little bit stronger
