mIa was laying on her stomach watching re-runs of Doctor Who when her phone rang. She stared at the phone for a second and felt a pang before answering. “Mom.” She said with a smile. “ Hey angel, hows Wilmington?” Her mother asked as Mia padded around her a small apartment that smelt of cookies and freshly made bread. “ Yeah, it's good. I met the Carvell's on thanksgiving. I tried to call but you didn't answer.” Mia pointed out and twisted her hair in her fingers. “ Oh I had to work baby, it was a big day in the office.” Her mother replied ignoring the sad tone in Mia’s voice. “The office doesn't run itself right?” The fake laugh was not wasted on Mia. “ Yeah, I guess.”
There was silence for a few seconds then came the question. “ So.. How’s your dad?” Mia felt a little bit awkward, almost like she was on the stand in one of her mother’s court cases. “ Yeah, he is good. Thanksgiving was great. Uncle Paul was there and so was Mary and Jean Paul.” Mia listened as her mom made an awww noise. “ They are really great people mom,” Mia said driving the point home. “ I know baby.” The point had got through. “So...” Mia’s mom said and then silence filled the line. “Christmas is coming.” She said and Mia knew what was coming. “ Will you be coming home for Christmas?” Her mom finally asked and Mia rubbed her brow. “Actually mom, I think it's better I stay here. I wanna spend Christmas with my sister and its too late for me to get flights out now. But I could come home for New Years...” The line was silent and then a small voice replied. “ Ok honey.” Her mom had not even tried to talk her round. “ Well... I guess I better go, I have work tomorrow and you have university. Look after yourself and I’ll send your gift tomorrow.” Her mother said and before Mia could say goodbye, she hung up. Mia slumped down on the couch and sighed. Although the call had been civil there was so much unsaid.
