🌸 Jhin has a fascination with many forms of ‘art’, but one of the forms he practices that he doesn’t show off very often is cooking. He learned to cook during his time in Tuula when he was younger. Watched the monks cook, eventually had to participate in said cooking. He recognized cooking as an art form and took more enjoyment out of it. 

Cooking might not be bursting with drama or anything, but it was certainly a stepping stone for what has become his obsession with the concept of art and perfecting it in both a physical and conceptual sense. He enjoys learning about the various dishes that regions outside of Ionia serve, and it is one of the things he gets to look forward to when he is sent off to work in a place like Noxus or Demacia.

Jhin’s home is a lot more disheveled and messy than one might believe, but he doesn’t see it as such.

He sees his home as ordered and tidy, but since he lives in a very modest home shack within the mountains on the outskirts of Zhyun it’s actually pretty cluttered and unkempt. He feels a lot more comfortable with a smaller home and his home is filled with all manner of objects. He keeps a lot of things he finds overseas because he sees value in them due to Ionia generally disliking outsiders and what they have to offer.

He has paintings from overseas, old art supplies, empty casings for bullets, open chemical reagents for his shows and traps, spare metal petals... he keeps plenty of resources that he intends to use in the future. He’s by no means a hoarder, but the smallness of his home keeps it cramped and constricting.

🎯 Jhin would like to visit Ixtal, as it’s a place of pretty ancient elemental magic. He assumes that his own magic is some form of elemental magic, but he wants nothing to do with the Ionian view of magic and the harmonic, controlled approach they have. He needs to leave Ionia behind to further study what his magic actually entails. Ixtal is also one of the only regions that Jhin hasn’t performed in or visited at all.

🎯 He has pretty much no respect for the traditions of Ionia at all. Everything from the isolated view most Ionians seem to hold, their view of magic, their view of death, and their general attitude towards the outside world just don’t sit well with Jhin. He loves travelling to Piltover and Zaun, believing that the people there are hundreds of times more interesting than Ionians. They’re more chaotic, and more alien to him. He wants to spend his time performing for them, as they’re less familiar with what he has to offer.

🎯 When he’s dressed as a civilian, sometimes Jhin will perform at Piltovan pubs or in Zaunite bars. He enjoys the general atmosphere of both places so much so that he’s actually willing to play music or sing to further fit in with their culture before showing what he’s truly capable of. He puts his talents to use and doesn’t want money for the little shows he puts on, instead the audience pays with something more valuable than money... attention.

Jhin’s dancing is like a ritual to him, and it also brings him some sense of happiness. When he dances he feels like he is expressing himself in a method that is easier to understand than his work.

He doesn’t dance because he thinks it’s beautiful, he dances because it makes him appear bigger. Jhin always wants to be seen and to help make himself bigger he does very active and quick dances, which contrasts with his slow style. It’s an attempt to try and get people to notice him, it is an attempt at socializing by a man who does not understand how normal socializing actually works.

Jhin thinks that dancing will make him more socially appealing and attractive overall, as he doesn’t know what society’s standard for men is. We see in Mind of the Virtuoso that Jhin does not see things as other people do, he sees things through a different lens and since he can’t interpret the norm as others can, he has to try and figure out a way to connect with it despite not understanding it.

Dancing is his way.

Jhin had to wear a straitjacket when he spent his years in Tuula. While the monks did treat him well, due to the severity of his crimes and his delusions no sane person would trust him to have his arms free at any time that he wasn’t supervised by one or more people.

The tightness induced by the straitjacket caused Jhin to start developing a want for being squeezed, or pressed. He likes it when he feels constricted and crushed by the things around him, which led to the design of the mask he wears under his first one. The way it tightens his neck and almost strangles him is a pleasure to him because in Tuula he was taught that constriction is a comfort.

This is also why his armor is so tight, and why he tends to walk a bit more stilted and with some exaggeration. His outfit is just a fancier form of a jacket, it is binding into him and restricting his movements when he wears it. This is pretty much one of the only comforts he has in a world that offers him none.

|| Updates to my portrayal in regards to the Zed comic lore. ||

All of the content in the Zed comics, up until the end of issue six is applicable and I think it’s entirely acceptable as canon for Jhin’s character. I will not be portraying Jhin in the sense that he was imprisoned. I will instead assume that during the three week time-skip that happened in issue six, he escaped and is lurking in Ionia somewhere in the Zhyun mountains.

Jhin orchestrated the events of the Zed comics to a degree. He takes pride in boasting that he is the man who made Zed the mentally wrecked person he is today. He’d brag about it if he had anyone to talk to; maybe even tell the whole tale to you himself. Of course, it’d sound a little different coming from his mouth. He considers driving a hefty wedge between Shen and Zed one of his greatest performances; he uses it as a scale to measure his other shows against.

He regularly returns to both Zaun and Piltover to perform. They excite him due to all of the new technology and interesting audiences there. The difference between Ionians, Pilties, and Zaunites is gigantic. This huge difference in culture and social structure pulls in Jhin’s interest and makes him wish to perform there more often. The attention he gets from Camille also helps boost his motivation towards being a reoccurring visitor. 

Jhin cares extremely little about the state of Ionia politically. He doesn’t really care who grapples for power because Jhin doesn’t believe in that kind of power. Jhin merely wants whoever is in charge to provide him with the freedom to do as he wishes outside of the law. Ionia’s traditions and spilled blood in the name of the land mean nothing. He still seeks to bring Ionia and the people of it into a new age of understanding. A proper renaissance caked in fleshy creativity.
