wait wait wait, the post comparing and contrasting anti-feminists and feminists...... what do you think a feminist is? because if someone is saying those things and calling themselves a feminist then the are sorely mistaken...... like huh that's not a feminist, that is basically a misandrist

I’m not sure which post this is exactly referring to (and the anon has probably long since given up on the blog, with all the time that’s passed!), but I will point out that many of these “feminists are like this, anti-feminists are like that” involve exaggerations or straw men for both.And that’s regardless of whether the post is sympathetic towards feminists or anti-feminists (or whoever). They’re bound to be biased to try and reenforce the beliefs the post-maker holds.

In terms of misandristic feminists… it’s certainly possible for misandrists to be feminists, just as it’s possible for transphobes or racists to be feminists. Feminism as a philosophy is “equality for all”, but as a movement it has the more concrete description of “advocating for women’s rights”.

People will have different opinions on how best to do that, or in what way equality should be reached. If they believe that they will best aid women by hating or hurting men, then they are misandristic, yes. But they are still a feminist, because they call themselves a feminist and they do advocate for women’s rights in a way that they personally feel is justified.

I have no idea if this is a suggestion or just a general comment.

It sounds like the kind of statement that would work both ways, though, so whether the original stated “men” or “women”. Both groups have privileges and disadvantages, the former being the most obvious to those of another gender.

Which always seem to be the case, the grass being greener and all that. If we’re going down the path of insisting that other people “need to” recognize their own privileges, we mustn’t forget to look at our own advantages, that we either take for granted or dismiss as being irrelevant. After all, we don’t know what life would really be like without them, if we’re even aware of them.

Ultimately, men and women (who have been raised as such) will have different experiences, and it’s silly to pretend that we know how it’s like for others when we’ve never experienced it for ourselves. Which I believe is was whole point of this “privilege” concept: not to form a hierarchy of “who has it worse”, but to remind ourselves that it’s worth listening to others from all walks of life, instead of making assumptions.
