jumping on the fanart train
I've never looked better
Inspired by Day 12: Playground by @solitude-of-stars
Sir David Attenborough voice: "Here in the waters of the southern archipelago west of the Carnelian coast, we can see Sequencers in their natural habitat. This one was some time away from the flock. Its calls signals the others that it is not dangerous and they can be at ease. The others can hear that the newcomer is friendly by the modulation of the sound that matches their own..."
Old art but like, I must He looks so silly Based off of this btw cus I just had to
Even if this art is old, good to know that past me knew what dumb parts of him to get attached to
Wow! Two drawings in one day? I think this should become the norm for me!
Okay I said I wouldn't open this can of worms but I looked up pufferfish mating rituals and now I have time and I can't stop thinking about it.
While genAI in fandom spaces is definitely a problem and I am wholeheartedly against it... It's a problem that a lot of people who now complain about it have contributed to.
Because standards have risen so damn high. People aren't just grateful for fanart and fanfic, they aren't happy to find someone to RP with, no.
They only want fanart that rivals official merch in quality!
They only want to read fanfic written by masters!
They have several paragraphs of requirements you have to fulfill if you want to join an RP!
In the end, they want nothing short of a professional experience, preferably something better than that (I'm quite frankly sick of the "I've read fanfic that was better than published fiction" take for that exact reason)... But they want it for free.
And anything that is less than that isn't worth their time. Now, I don't know how bad it is in the roleplay and fanart communities, but in fanfic?
Yeah, Kudos, which were once simply meant as a nice little "Thanks, I liked it" are now often given only to fics "worthy" of them. As if it's the highest praise to be bestowed on a fic, something that loses it's value if given too freely. How often I have seen "Well I only give Kudos to the very best fics"... It's sad. And I see it with my own fics, too. People read them, probably enjoy them well enough, I guess, yet don't leave Kudos because "Well, yeah it's decent, but not THAT good". Comments? Even rarer.
It's great that some people have the time, skill and drive to make fanwork capable of rivalling commercial work and that they choose to invest these ressources into providing art for free rather than make a living of it, but that shouldn't be the bar everyone ought to reach.
There was a time when mediocre was good enough and people were genuinely thankful to fan creators for their work. When anything "better" than that was seen as an enormous treat for the fandom, not the bare minimum!
We can't dismiss fan creators for not living up to those ridiculous standards and then turn around and scorn them for trying to reach them, no matter what.
If fandom as a whole doesn't appreciate most people's effort, then why make an effort at all?
