what's a common childhood thing you missed out on?

monkey bars.

when i was 5, i was at school with my friends. at that point i never got past a couple rungs because i didn't like how the metal felt on my hands. one girl, who was always really fast at the monkey bars, wanted to beat her timed record. she was going really fast until she slipped, landing on her arm. she started crying and holding her arm, so i helped her up and walked her over to the teacher. i thought she was crying because of the wood chips and how sharp they must've been when she fell, but it turns out she broke her arm. i didn't put together that 'hey, arms aren't supposed to curve like that'.

after that i was too scared to try the monkey bars again until i was 14 and my step mom bet me $50 that i wouldn't be able to get across them. she was right.
