HI COOL PERSON ^^
Can you throw Mike and his dad angst bricks at me okay thanks
Mike and his dad didn't immediately drift apart when Garrett got abducted, he was actually decently supportive of his son and tried to navigate the grief with him. As time went on and his mental health, as well as his relationship with his wife worsened, he started closing off his family and resorting to alcohol.
For a good chunk of Mike's childhood he was also hunting for the attention of his father. They were insanely close and now he was basically a stranger to him. Mike's dad became a husk of who he used to be, hardly acknowledging anybody and going off to do only God knows what. I don't see Mike doing anything crazy to get his father to notice him, but he'd definitely adopt a: "it doesn't matter what I do, nobody would care" type of mindset that can be pretty harmful, especially as a kid.
I feel like a lot of that longing for love would start molding into resentment. At a certain point, Mike doesn't view his father as worth his time or even worth saving — he just focuses on his mom who's a whole other can of worms.
When his father leaves, he tries looking for him but he's gone. This is one of the hardest periods in Mike's life, and depending on if you're going off the: "he left after Mike's mom died" or "he left as soon as Mike turned 18" interpretation of his backstory, the abandonment has definitely scarred him.
Due to his parents Mike had to take the role of an adult. He sees himself as "the man who needs to fix everything" and with nobody to guide him, it's definitely evolved into something worse.
Mike doesn't really think about his dad anymore, or even talk about him with Abby. He doesn't really hate him or love him. He's just ... a person he wants to forget about.
I JUST GOT NEWS OF WHAT ANIMAL IS THIS YEAR.
