things i wish i knew when applying to college
disclaimer: i’m not a professional. i’m not a guidance counselor or anything like that. i’m just one well meaning fool trying to disperse some of my wisdom.
the application process
start early. don’t stress about it, but start as soon as you can.
send out as many applications as you can afford to/want to, but don’t apply to places that you wouldn’t want to attend.
if you get free or reduced price lunch, you can use the common app to send applications for free, but you will have to pay to send your act scores (i’m not sure about the sat because i didn’t take that)
pick at least one safety school, but again, make sure it’s a school you’d want to attend.
if you can afford to, don’t be afraid to apply to schools you think are “reaches.” as long as you have some backups, there’s no harm in applying.
rejection is okay. yes, it’s a bit of a heartbreak, but it doesn’t reflect your worth. you’re not any less of a person because you didn’t get into an ivy league.
decision time
tour as many campuses as you can. preferably at a time when classes are in session. you’ll get a feel for the culture of the school and it’ll be easier to see if it’s a good fit for you.
don’t choose a university that you don’t like just because it’s prestigious.
don’t be afraid to go to your local community college. if you like the campus, if it’s all you can afford, if you don’t want to go too far from home, that’s okay. don’t let other people’s opinions of community colleges dictate your decision.
listen to the advice of your parents and friends, but remember that you’re the one who’s going to be attending the college you decide on, not them.
try your hardest, do your best, take care of yourself, and remember: there is no wrong way to get an education.
